The Promise That Can't Be Kept

Tricky was awake before anyone else in her family, like usual. She shook her twin sister, whispering in her ear, "Zil! Wake up!"

The zorua groaned and turned over, her pinkish red fur matted from being slept on. "Tricky..." Zil yawned, "Why are you up so early?"

"Because! I wanna go explore! Please?"

"Tricky-"

"Pretty please? With an illusion on top?"

Zil laughed at that. "I guess if you really want to, but shush. You're going to wake mom and dad, and they won't let their week old babies go out of the den."

"I know, I know!" Tricky said with a chuckle, though she quieted her voice. With a grin, she pulled the slightly smaller Zorua out of the cave. The golden eyed Pokémon smiled at the orange sunrise. Hues of pink, red, orange, and yellow flooded the skies above Celestic Town.

"Woah!" Tricky gasped.

"It's beautiful!" Zil added.

The normal colored zorua closed her mouth, which she hadn't realized was hanging open. She turned to Zil. "How about those ruins? Mom says they're special!"

"That's a good idea! Let's go, let's go!" The zorua with pinkish red highlights said, giggling. The sisters raced one other to the large temple, skidding to a halt inside. Zil looked around and let out a frightened squeak. She clung to Tricky, scared.

"I-Its okay, Zil..." the normal zorua said, quivering.

"This place is dark, and scary, and dark, and freaky, and scary!" Zil cried out as she squeezed Tricky tighter in her death grip.

"Zil! You're! Choking! Me!" Tricky gasped out. The other zorua softened her embrace slightly.

"S-Sorry..." she said softly.

Tricky looked around, before pointing at a mystical painting deeper in the room. It depicted three lights around a smaller light in the center.

"What's that..?" Zil asked in awe, seeming to have forgotten her fear for the moment.

"I don't know, but it looks important!"

Tricky slowly put one paw in front of the other. She did the same with another paw, and then another, and another. Her pace was slow and boring, but she was scared, and for good reason. Both Zorua could feel something mystical and terrifying in the room... and neither could tell if it was the painting or something else.

Zil followed suit, though she was even slower than Tricky. She tested each stone she would step on, and waited for a few moments to ensure she was safe before progressing. It was safe to say that their parents had likely woken on their own time while the children progressed sluggishly throughout the chamber.

After what seemed like an eternity to the young Zorua, Tricky was close enough to the painting to touch it. She lifted a paw slowly and precisely, touching the ball of light that was in the middle directly. Then, the wall shuddered and moved. With a squeak, the normal Zorua jumped backwards, crashing into Zil.

"Tricky! W-What's t-that?!"

"I don't know!" The zorua screamed as the chamber quivered around them. It seemed like it would collapse at any moment from the force of the walls movement, and just general age.

Tricky being the braver of the two stood, blowing dust off of her and her sister. She stared straight at the new room that had been opened.

"We have to go in there," she said, assured of her decision.

"There?! Tricky, are you crazy?!"

"Zil, it had to have opened for a reason! And I'm going to find that out!" Tricky replied as she walked towards the darkness. Zil hesitated for a moment before standing up and following her sister, though it was more not wanting to be alone than bravery.

The Zorua was staring at a wall, covered in golden text. Her eyes glowed white as she read it, the words flowing out of her mouth and seeming to have an echo to her voice.

"Two tricks who can tell lies
Three will live, two will die
By a puzzled ones own hand
Two special ones will be lost from this land
Fulfill the prophecy long past, begun
Before the monster one has become
Do not make the mistakes like me
Do not attempt to be tricky."

Then the normal Zorua collapsed, breathing heavily. Her twin rushed to her side.

"Tricky! What happened?!"

"I don't know!" She cried out.

"It sounded like a prophecy!" The golden eyed Zorua gasped. "Can you say it again?" She, curious.

"Um... I'll try..." tricky said with a shudder as she turned back to the golden words. "Um... Zil..?"

"Yeah?" Zil replied.

"...can you read it this time..?" Tricky mumbled.

"Tricky!" She cried out.

"Zil, please?"

"Tri-"

"Pretty please? With an illusion on top?" Tricky gave Zil the puppy dog eyes and the zorua with pinkish red fur knew she couldn't refuse. She rolled her golden eyes with a laugh.

"Oh, fine..." she then turned to the wall herself and took a deep breath.

"Two tricks who can tell lies
Of them your heart shall indeed fly
A puzzled one will take something dear
Out of your sisters own selfish fear
Fulfill the prophecy long past, begun
Before the monster she has become
In the adjourning town you'll find
The quest that starts the journey of lies."

Zil, herself, collapsed. She gasped for breath.

"Why did it sound different?! Zil? Zil, why was it different?!" Tricky asked, frantically shaking her sister.

"I... I don't know... w-we should go tell mom..!"

A shadow was cast from the chamber wall. "You two won't be telling anybody about anything," a voice cackled. A large shape advanced. "You see, I've known about the prophecy on that wall behind you for a long time, though it sounded different when you two read it. Go ahead and take another look; perhaps you'll read the original?"

The two frightened Zorua were, of course, curious, so they turned to see a third verse of the prophecy.

In unison, they began to speak.

"A monster of lies
The heart that flies
The one that shines
The two that die
Twins from the same egg
One with pink and one with red
A third one, somewhat new
Shiny, different, colored blue
These three crusade through the night
Two with a form of blind sight
The three tricks will soon find
That everything is made of lies."
