Chapter 8. "You're a heartbreaker!"

Caleb's POV

After Katie told me we needed to take a break, I didn't feel like sitting around and moping; so, I immediately asked Sydney out to the movies.

I know, it was kinda a dumb move, but I wanted Katie to think I was moving on as quickly as she was.

Sydney seemed really excited, and honestly, I kinda was too. I missed being with her. Sure, she's the jealous and whiny type, but we had chemistry for two years, and those feelings just don't disappear in the blink of an eye.

I put down my phone and went downstairs for an 11:30 snack. Surprisingly, I saw Hayley sitting at the table eating an apple.

"Hayley? What are you doing down here, it's eleven thirty." I asked while opening the fridge.

She shrugged. "Hungry."

"Me too." I said as I took out a brownie. "But I know you, Hayley, this isn't the only reason. What's up?"

She sighed. "My best friend at school, Sarah, is going out with Ryan."

"Oh. I'm sorry." I said as I gave her a quick hug. Hayley has liked Ryan, Katie's little brother, for a few years now, so seeing him with another girl always makes her sad.

"Yeah, but that's sixth grade drama for you." She laughed. I could tell she was not trying to cry. I pulled her in for a real hug, and that's when the tears started flowing.

"Let it out, it's okay." I whispered in her ear as her tears soaked my shirt; but I didn't care. She needed me.

And I needed her.

I started to cry a little, too.

"Why are you crying?" Hayley asked as she pulled away, wiping her eyes.

"Katie wants a break from our relationship to sort out her feelings for someone else she likes. I asked Sydney out pretty much five minutes after she told me that. It's just stressful." I explained.

Hayley nodded. "I get it. So Katie's taking a break from you to date Luke?"

"What?!" I said a little too loudly.

Hayley put her finger over her mouth and shushed me before saying, "I overheard her and Annie talking about it earlier. Katie thinks she may have feelings for Luke."

I sighed and started to cry even more. "Why am I crying? This is stupid." I said as Hayley hugged me.

"It's okay to cry. It just means you've been strong for so long. We all need a time to share our emotions, Caleb." Hayley said as she pulled away.

I nodded. "Thanks, HayHay. Now go to sleep."

"Okay. You too." She said.

I laughed before saying good night and going downstairs.

Before I fell asleep I texted Sydney if we could go to the movies. She said yes and then I fell asleep, thinking about what I've done.

I've gotten myself into a huge mess. Why can't life be easy, where I pick a girl and everything's okay?

I guess life isn't easy; it's just a challenge.

Katie's POV

The next day I was getting ready for my date with Luke. I was searching through my closet for an outfit when Ryan walked in.

I smiled. "Hey, RyGuy. What's up?"

"I need advice." He said as he sat on the edge of my bed.

"Go for it." I said as I picked out a white dress with a black outline and waistband.

"This girl in school, Sarah, asked me out. I didn't want to be rude, so I said yes. Hayley looked really disappointed, and I like her. I know she likes me too, but I want to give Sarah a chance so I'm not mean." Ryan explained.

I sat down next to him. "Well, if you really like Hayley, I say you tell Sarah, nicely, that you don't have feelings for her and go out with Hayley."

"It's not as easy as you make it seem, Katie." Ryan snapped before leaving.

I sighed and closed my door as I got ready. I undressed and then slipped on my dress before doing my makeup and hair. Then Luke texted me saying he and Sydney were outside.

"Sydney? Hm, maybe she's going to see another movie." I said to myself as I texted him back.

I quickly ran down the stairs and said good bye to everyone before opening the door. When I opened it, I saw Luke smiling. Behind him was Sydney and...

Oh God no.

"Caleb? What are you doing here?" I exclaimed.

"I'm taking Sydney to the movies." He said as he wrapped his arm around Sydney. Sydney smiled and waved at me.

I shot a fake smile at her before dropping the subject and greeting Luke with a hug. I really didn't want to think much about Sydney and Caleb right now because I'll just start crying.

Luke and Sydney's mom drove us to the theater. Sydney was sitting next to Caleb, who was next to Luke who was next to me. I was glad Luke was in between us, because I really didn't want to see him.

But we weren't apart for long.

"Caleb, I can't see well here. Can we go next to Katie?" Sydney asked.

Caleb sighed and walked with Sydney next to me. Sydney insisted on sitting on Caleb's right because she could see better. So, Caleb was next to me.

"It's starting." Luke whispered as the lights dimmed and the movie began.

At one point of the movie I got bored, so I decided to snuggle with Luke; except I was snuggling in the wrong direction.

"Hey, quit flirting with me, I'm not your date." I jumped to see I was cuddling with Caleb, who winked at me.

I glared at him before snuggling with Luke. I hate to say this, but I missed him. I missed Caleb, and I felt guilty for basically dumping him to be with his best friend.

But I had to give Luke a chance, so I could sort out my feelings. So, I shoved aside all my feelings for Caleb and just focused on cuddling with Luke and watching the movie.

I wrapped my arms around Luke's waist with my head on his shoulder. He wrapped an arm around my shoulder before kissing my forehead.

Then I made a mistake.

I looked over to the right so I could grab my drink that was in the cup holder, but I saw Caleb and Sydney making out.

I immediately burst into tears and took off running.

"Katie!" I heard Luke yell as he chased me.

I quickly ran into a storage closet and broke down crying. My heart shattered even more than it did the last time I saw Caleb and Sydney kiss; before math class, I mean.

Luke opened the door and hugged me. "Hey, are you okay? What happened?"

I sniffed. "I saw Caleb and your sister making out."

He sighed. "You still have feelings for him, don't you?"

I nodded.

"Katie, you need to give me a chance, please. All I want is to be with you." He said.

"What about Veronica? She seems to like you." I said.

"Oh." Luke's expression changed.

"Did something happen between you two? It looks like you're not telling me something—"

I was interrupted by Luke's lips, which smacked against mine. He pulled away, where our lips were only about an inch apart.

Then I made another mistake.

I placed my hands on the sides of his head and kissed him back. We kissed for a few minutes before the door swung open.

"Oh my gosh!" I heard Sydney scream.

I quickly jumped off of Luke to see Sydney with her mouth wide open, and Caleb was behind her. He had tears streaming down his cheeks.

"Caleb! Wait, I—"

"Shut up! Just shut up, Katie!" Caleb screamed. "I don't want to hear what stupid story you're gonna come up with. I'm sick of being with girls who don't trust me or their feelings. I don't want to be with you if you're not sure how you feel about me. I don't want to wait for you everyday with my phone glued to my hip to see what you decided. No, I'm not going to wait anymore. At least Sydney knows how she feels about me."

My eyes were swelled with tears, my vision blurry from all the tears in my eyes. How could he say that to me? And use Sydney against me by saying that he knows she loves him, but I'm not sure?

Caleb stormed away. I got up and ran to catch up with him.

"Caleb! Caleb please! Just hear me out!" I said with tears falling down my face.

I followed him until we got to the sidewalk. He turned around and snapped, "I don't want to hear it."

"Please, just give me a chance—"

"No, I've given you enough chances. And now I'm going to make it official; it's done. We're done. I'm breaking up with you, Katie. I hope you're happy; you can be with Luke now." Caleb said with tears in his eyes.

"Caleb, you don't mean it."

"Yes, I do. Good bye, Katie." Caleb turned around so I wouldn't see him cry. A couple seconds later his mom picked him up. He quickly ran into the car and they drove away.

Luke and Sydney came out of the theater. Luke tried to hug me but I shoved him away. "This is all your fault!" I snapped.

"What are you talking about?" Luke asked.

"You're the one who made Caleb break up with me!"

"Woah, no I didn't! He broke up with you, Katie, because you're a cheater."

"Guys, enough—" Sydney tried to say but was interrupted by me.

"I am not a cheater!"

"Then you're a heart breaker, Katie! You just broke Caleb's heart!"

"That's not my fault!"

"Oh yeah? Really? I sure as heck know it's not mine, though."

"It is!" I shouted.

"How, Katie?" He shouted back. "Am I the one who told Caleb we needed a break? Am I the one who went on a date with me, thinking you may have feelings for me, and break his heart? Tell me, huh?"

The tears came pouring down like a rain storm. I fell to the ground on my knees and sobbed. "I'm sorry." I whispered.

"Sorry isn't gonna cut it this time, Katie." Luke said as he and Sydney left.

That's when I realized I had no ride, so I called my mom to come get me.

When I got home I cried myself to sleep, rewatching the whole scene in my head.

And then I realized Luke was right; I am a heartbreaker.
