Chapter 3. I just started a triangle!

Katie's POV

The next day I was at my locker taking out my things for Spanish when a voice yelled from down the hall, "Katie!"

I turned around to see Caleb running towards me and waving.

I lifted my hand to wave back but quickly lowered it. I can't be this easy; I need to pretend that I'm still mad at Caleb.

It's really hard, though, because he's so cute and forgiving that it's hard for me to stay mad at him.

But I can still try.

He ran over and panted, still giving me his signature smile. "Hey! Wanna walk together?"

I rolled my eyes and slammed my locker door shut as I walked in the opposite direction.

"Katie! Katie, wait! I need to talk to you!" Caleb came running back and walked along next to me.

"About what?" I snapped, still pretending to be mad.

"Look, I'm really sorry about yesterday. Syd and I should've included you, I feel really bad about it. So does Syd. We both apologize." Caleb grabbed my hand and looked me in the eye, smiling. "Can you forgive us?"

I sighed. "Okay. I forgive you."

"Thank you, Katie." Caleb wrapped me into a hug. "I don't know what I would've done if you didn't forgive us. You're one of my best friends."

I nodded. His warmth was so comforting, and I felt my fingers tingle as I hugged him back.

I didn't want him to, but he pulled away and walked with me the rest of the way to Spanish.

"So, what'd you think of the homework last night?" He asked me.

I shrugged. "Easy, I guess."

"Easy?" He repeated, his eyes widened. "Are you joking? We had to write a front and back page essay about ourselves in Spanish! For half of it I had to use Google translate!"

"Half?" I asked, not buying it.

"Fine, three quarters of it, but still!" Caleb exclaimed as we walked into the classroom.

I giggled as we sat down, the bell ringing a couple seconds later.

Señora Rodriguez was teaching us how to conjugate the verb 'ser' while I was staring at Caleb's hair. Gosh, why does he have to be so hot...

"Katie! Can you answer the question?" Señora Rodriguez all of a sudden asked.

"Hmm? I'm sorry, I wasn't listening..." I said as I felt my face go bright red.

"I was asking you, Katie, how to conjugate ser into saying 'I am...', can you answer that question?" Señora explained.

"Oh, uh, si. To say 'I am' is 'yo soy'." I said.

Muy excellente!" She said as she wrote it on the board.

Caleb turned around and smiled at me. "You're good at this. I didn't even know this."

I smiled. "Thanks." I whispered.

"Do you think you could tutor me after school? Annie wants to see you anyways." Caleb asked.

"Sure! I'll meet you after school at the front entrance."

"Sounds good." Caleb winked and turned back around.

Why was I excited to tutor Caleb in Spanish on our second day of school? Whatever, this is going to be great!

•••

After school I texted Mom to pick me up around 5:30 at Caleb's house. Caleb met me outside before we got into his mom's car.

"KATIE!!" Annie cried as I climbed into the backseat with her.

"ANNIE BANANIE!" I cried back as I hugged her.

"Nice to see ya, Katie!" Ms. Katie called from the front seat.

"Right back at you!" I said as Annie and I talked in the backseat.

"How does it feel to be a freshman?" Annie asked.

"Horrible. You're at the bottom of the food chain, so no one knows you. Plus high school is a lot harder than middle school." I said.

"True." Annie replied before telling me about eighth grade so far.

When we got to the house Caleb took me downstairs to his room where we set up on the floor.

"Okay, so I'm still really confused on this conjunction stuff—"

"It's conjugation, Caleb." I laughed while pulling out my notebook.

"Right." He said as he smiled at me. Our eyes locked. We just stared at each other for a few seconds before he cleared his throat and looked away. "Let's get back to work." He said.

"Right, yeah. Okay." I said a little disappointedly as I turned to the page in my notebook to my notes.

"Okay, so to conjugate, you just have to remember the pattern." I began to explain how to conjugate the verb ser until Caleb said he wanted to try a sentence.

"Okay, um, ¡Hola! Yo soy Caleb." He said in his American accent.

I laughed and clapped my hands. "Beautiful!"

"Not as beautiful as you." He blurted before covering his mouth.

I blushed and felt my face turn brighter than a tomato. "Thanks." I said quietly.

"I'm really sorry, Katie, I didn't mean to say that. I mean, I...I'm sorry, I have a girlfriend." He said.

"I know." I said quietly again while I nodded.

"Anyways, can you help me with the homework?" He asked.

"Yeah. We can do it together." I said as I reached for a pencil. Caleb did, too, and our hands touched.

I blushed again and so did he, to my surprise. Then he looked me in the eye and made eye contact with me.

And that's when it all went uphill for me.

Caleb began to lean in. I wasn't sure if this was a dream, but dream or not, I was gonna go for it. So, I leaned in too.

Our foreheads touched, then our noses. I felt a tingling sensation as his fingertips touched my jawline. Then finally, he placed his lips on mine and kissed me.

I couldn't believe it! My crush was kissing me!

I kissed him back. I thought he would pull away after one kiss, but I guess I was wrong, because he kissed me again.

I started getting excited. I wrapped my arms around his neck and kissed him back. He placed his hands on my hips as he kissed me.

We kissed slowly and gently for a few minutes before I pulled away.

"What's the problem?" Caleb asked.

"This is wrong. You have a girlfriend!" I exclaimed as I unwrapped my arms from his neck.

"I do?" He asked.

"Don't play dumb with me, Caleb Logan! What would Sydney do if she found out?" I said.

"I'd dump him." A voice said from the doorway.

Oh crap.

I turned around slowly to see Sydney standing in the doorway with her arms crossed over her chest, tears streaming down her cheeks.

"I thought you cared about me!" She cried before she ran off.

"Sydney! Syd, wait! I can explain!!" Caleb got up and ran out the door.

I decided to follow. So I quickly stuffed my things back into my backpack and I ran upstairs.

I got to the front door when I saw Caleb chasing Sydney down the driveway.

"Syd! SYD!" He shouted before she disappeared down the corner. Caleb put his hands on his head as he walked back.

"C-Caleb, I...I-I'm so sorry I did this!" I said as he came back inside.

"No." He sighed as he lowered his hands. "I'm sorry, Katie."

My eyes began to water. Before I could start crying in front of Caleb, I just ran off like Sydney did.

"Katie! Not you too!" Caleb shouted as he chased me, too.

I ran as fast as I could down the street until I couldn't hear Caleb shout my name anymore. Unfortunately, I realized I left my Spanish notebook there, and that I lived a good fifteen minute drive from his house. So I stood on the corner of the street and called my mom to come get me.

What did I get myself into? I just started a triangle!
