Chapter 16-Day 2
It's a good memory of Jonah. We are walking around the herd on the neighboring ranch. It's the first summer we are working, and it's fun being together and with the animals. Jonah is just a friend, but I know I have feelings for him; he is shirtless and 14. He looks terrific; I have to stop myself from staring at him when he isn't looking. He is telling dumb jokes about cows, and the sun is setting. He turns to laugh at his own joke and the sunsets casting him in a golden orange light; his smile is perfect, and he looks at me, and it hits me. I am in love with Jonah Nelson, and my life will never be the same.
I wake up when a bird calls out for something, and I groan outloud, "I hate birds."
"Good morning, sleepyhead," I hear Jillian day.
Ally laughs and asks, "How did you sleep?"
I gesture so-so, and she nods like she knew the answer already. "What should we do today, anyway? Do you think we should stay here? Or find someplace knew?" I ask.
Ally thinks we should move on, and I agree, "we need some more food anyways," says Jillian.
"Works for me. Let's pack up and go," I say.
The rest of the day goes well. At some point, a cannon went off, but it was on the other side of the arena from us. Ally climbed up a tree and let us know the forest is pretty thick and leads up to some snow-capped mountains and cliffs around the edge. We found a nice cave and decide to camp there before heading toward the largest of the mountains.
"I wonder who it was today. It was just the one cannon, right?" I ask the girls.
Jillian nods, and Ally adds, " We should know soon; the sun is setting."
We eat the last of the bread and sit and think. The anthem starts playing, and Lily is the only picture to show up. "Oh, man. I don't know who I wanted it to be, but I liked her," I say to anyone listening.
"Me too," says Ally.
We sit in silence, and I hear my stomach grumble, "you know what I wish we had to eat?" I ask.
"Besides a banana and stale bread?" asks Jillian.
"Yes, besides that, they had a blue cheese and chicken salad in our suite at the training center....it was magical," I say with a smile and look at Ally, "what about you?"
She thinks for a second before answering, "I want that macaroni and cheese with chicken. They only made it the first time night, but it was yummy. Jillian, your turn."
She thinks to herself, "oh, that's easy, the lamb with green curry and rice. Now that was magical. I might drool right now...." she says, and I take a bite of the stale bread, "yup, this was a bad idea."
I laugh. Suddenly we hear dings in the air, and I look out the cave entrance and see three sponsor gifts land.
"Well, Lookie what we have here," and I run out to get the gifts. I see two with the number 10 and one with the number 9, which I hand to Jillian. She opens it, and the smell is fantastic. I guess it's the Lamb and green curry.
"Ally, which one do you want to check?" And she takes the smaller of the two and opens it to find the macaroni she described.
"Wow, that's amazing," She squeals.
I open mine and see the salad and smile, "thank you to whoever sent us these. This is amazing." As I start eating, I see a note to Ally and I-
'Great job, you two. We are so proud-M J & A.'
I show it to Ally, who smiles. We eat and do the same rotation as the night before. 13 tributes are gone....11 to go. Romulus and Titus need to take each other out, so I don't have to worry about it.
In the middle of the night, we hear screams and squeals and howls coming from the forest off in the distance.
I sit up and look at Jillian, "what the fuck is that?" I whisper.
Ally sits next to me, and Jillian looks out towards the sound, "zero clue, maybe a surprise the Gamemakers have for someone out there, let's go back to sleep. We should be ok. We should go in the opposite direction of that sound tomorrow," says Jillian and I nod. Ally is curled up next to me and falls back asleep. I wave Jillian over, and she lays her head on my shoulder, and we all go to sleep.
