Chapter ten

Rayhaan's POV

I checked my wrist watch and the time was 2:18am. I was driving through a quiet road, I had finished a night shift at the hospital. Today was a very tiring and hectic day, with a major car accident at the highway, more than fifty people injured and twelve dead. A truck driver had been drinking and driving and he hit a bus filled with passengers.

Blood was everywhere when they were rushed into the accidents and emergency section. Ten of the passengers were already dead by the time they reached the hospital, and two more couldn't be saved, including the truck driver.

The cries of wailing families could be heard all over. I could remember the last unidentified body lying at the mortuary, and when his wife was called upon to identify the body, she broke down completely.

"H...haidar? You promised to be with me...you promised to stay with me forever, till jannah... please wake up haidar!" She wailed as she shoke him.

I felt pity for the families of the dead. Truly death arrives unexpectedly. Some are fathers that have left for work like a normal Tuesday, Some are brothers that have left for school, some are mothers that have dropped their children in school, not knowing they wouldn't be able to pick them up, all taken by an unexpected death.

Truly every soul must taste death.

I was brought back from my thoughts by a glittery light from under the passengers seat, just on cue the traffic signal turned red. I searched under the seat until I touched a cold metal and I picked it up moving it close to my face as I examined it.

The light reflected against shiny sivery metal, it looks like some adornments worn by women. But what could it be doing in my car.

I haven't given anyone a ride in my car recently...except for the niqabi girl, could it be her's. The signal turned green and I moved forward. I drove at a high speed and I reached home in no time. I slipped the slivery jewelry into my chest pocket and tiptoed into the house. I went straight into my room, quietly so as not to wake anyone.

There was a food flask by the night stand and a small note. Umma.

"Don't sleep hungry, eat this"

I smiled slightly after seeing the note.  I had a shower, and then I ate umma's delicious jollof rice.

Laying down, with my back against the soft mattress,   I held up the silver jewelry and I kept looking at it. It looks like a bracelet and it was broken.

It belongs to the niqabi girl, Noor. Her eyes were captivating, filled with innocence.

I drifted off to sleep with flashes of beautiful black orbs.

I entered the jewelry shop and looked at the girl behind the counter weirdly. I wanted to buy a gift for my cousin sister who was getting married in a few months, I guessed she might like bangles. I also thought I should return the bracelet back to the niqabi girl and then it looked broken, so here I am, in some random jewelry shop, looking absolutely like someone who's lost.

"How can I help you Sir?" A salesgirl asked me with a very wide grin. I looked away from her before answering.

"I wanted this to be fixed" I said placing he bracelet on the glass counter.

The salesgirl examined the bracelet for a while before she spoke. "It's a minor thing, would be repaired in just five minutes"

"Can you show me some bangles? Gold bangles?"

She kept showing me different designs and persuading me to buy. I didn't know a thing about jewelry but all what she showed me didn't fit a bride.

I guess I'd try another shop.

But the salesgirls, Rebecca, from her name tag didn't take no for an answer. She kept showing me jewelry after jewelry, telling me to buy as if her job depended on it. I was just looking at them until something caught my eye.

"Can I see that" I said gesturing to some sort of jewelry behind her, in a covered glass, shown in full display.

"That necklace?" She asked and I nodded. She went over to a man, who looked like her boss from the way he was speaking to her. They argued for a while before she returned with the necklace.

"This is a very expensive necklace, it's pendant is made from a very rare stone, the Yakot stone" she said. "And it has a very special feature, it glows in water" she then bought a cup of water and immersed a sample ring into it and it glowed brightly.

I listened to her and then nodded. The necklace was indeed an artifact

"How much does it cost" I asked

"Let me inquire about it" She then left and came back with a man, the manager he introduced himself.

"Four hundred and fifty six thousand naira" he said looking very bored, thinking I'm just window shopping.

"Pack it" I said in a serious tone, placing my credit card on the counter.

After the whole transaction, the salesgirl bought the niqabi girl's bracelet, fixed and polished.

"Thank you so much sir, please do come by sometime" she said and I turned to leave with the two packages.
