Chapter 8 Brave And The Bold

Grazing ever so peacefully the young antelope had no Idea of what was to come, lowering its head to munch on the grass blades. Now and then it'll lift his head to check for danger, it was an instinct in which was developed from her mother, even though the Pride Lands were safe once more the young one had developed a new trait and it was good the young one did so because he noticed a brown object laying low in the yellow grass, looking a little bit out of place, it was a dark colour against a lighter colour, it was like a rhino in a crocodile bask, quite obvious but he did not panic for he knew to trust his training, the training he got from his father Bupa, the stubborn Antelope in which Fuli would always have to say please. Bupa always told him to don't react to the enemy and instead keep an eye on him and slowly move away to either a big herd or to safety, don't try to be scared, the predator will sense that, once you're out of his sight or he sees you're not alone, one will not go through with his or hers plan. For today his son Benji was out for a stroll, he needed to learn how to be independent as all young ones do. In a matter of a few seconds his father's advice will determine if he lives or not, Benji acted as if he had enough of the grass he was munching on and decided to back up with an eye still on the long grass and munch on some others, the brown lion who was in the grass kept his eye on him, studying his every move, his possible weaknesses and strengths, not that he would since he was a young prey who would be dinner very soon, Benji kept moving away and soon enough he made his way behind a big rock, the brown lion known as Rocky emerged from the grass, still keeping low he made his way on top of the rock, he licked his lips and pounced over the rock hoping there was a juicy antelope but all he got was a mouthful of sand and rocks, spitting it out Rocky was angry with himself, looking around he saw no one in sight, nothing but grass, rocks and baobab trees. Disgusted with himself he shook his head and regathered his thoughts, he was here was a mission, to get close to Karla and the cubs and lure them to their death and if he didn't want to fail Talia he must not cause alarm, Rocky jogged away in search for the cubs

                                                                                             ......

Confused by what lay ahead of him, Rafi looked to his right at Carlos. "Great, where to now?",

"Don't know?", Carlos said. "Maybe this is another test, there are 4 cave entrances, we know one of them will lead further into the cave and the other 3 will either lead to danger or a dead-end". Thinking Carlos couldn't think of anything,

"They're too dark to see if there is light at the end", Ahren said, trying to see through the blackness.

"We could split up and go into all of them and see which one is the right one?", Grace announced,

"No, it's best if we all stick together, in case we need one another, plus we're supposed to work as a team", Carlos said, shaking his head he looked over to Karla who had her thinking face on, "What do you think sis?".

"We could use echolocation?", Karla stated,

"What's that?", Carlos asked,

"It's what some sea creatures use underwater, echolocation is where the location of objects is detected by reflected sound".

Looking at one another the rest looked puzzled and confused, "English please sis?", Carlos said, rolling her eyes Karla screamed, it sounded like she is running down the cave tunnel screaming yet she is right here, the sound waves bouncing off the walls,

"See?", Karla said looking at them,

"Oh I get it, alright we'll give it a try", Carlos said,

"You'll need to do it since you have the roar and the loudest voice here",

"But I can't roar, remember?", Carlos said puzzled,

"Yes you can, you just have to believe, I believe in you", Karla said, nudging Carlos in the arm.

"Alright, give me some space", Carlos said standing up on all fours and taking a deep breath in, he has seen how Kion prepares when he uses the roar and he ought to follow his steps, Carlos took a deep breath, not only from his lungs but from deep inside and soon when he was ready he roared at the far right tunnel, eureka, it worked, the loud booming roar bouncing off the walls and floor, the ground under them began to rumble as the roar traveled down the cave.

"Now listen. If the roar continues it's a long tunnel, if the roar stops it's a dead-end",

"Thanks, Karla, you're the best", Carlos said roaring at the tunnel again and listening, the sound kept on going, counting the seconds the roar reached four seconds before it stopped,

"I guess that's not it", Carlos said roaring at the next one, same thing, one, two, three...Even shorter tunnel, that left two more. Taking a deep breath he roared, counting Carlos managed to get ten seconds out of the roar before it disappeared, walking to the last one Carlos took his stance and roared, the sound traveling for seven seconds before it stopped. "Aha, it's this one Carlos said running towards the second tunnel from the left, everyone cheered him on as they ran into the tunnel with Carlos at the front roaring his way through the dark, left, right, and right again they went, up and down left to right again until they finally saw some light, relieved they ran out into an opening, a few good meters to the edge, an edge of where if you fell you will surely not live.

"Where to now?", Rafi asked, looking at Carlos.

"Not sure, let's have a look around and see what the task is", Carlos said looking around, vines were hanging around, but that was no use, it was short and won't support individuals if they tried to swing across and even if they did manage the gap was massive, around twenty meters of air.

"What's that?", Ahren said pointing out a round object on the far right of the edge on the other side?

"It seems to be a log", Karla replied,

"Ahren, see if you could push that log over here so we can cross over it", Carlos suggested,

Ahren flew over the gap and over to the log, getting behind it Ahren tried to push the log over so it could fall and land on the other side but it wouldn't budge at all, Ahren was too small to be able to push over the log, "I can't push it, it's too heavy, sorry", Ahren yelled, his voice echoing all over the walls.

"It's okay, fly over and we'll see what we can do", Carlos said sitting down,

"What about that thing in the roof", Grace called out, looking up there was a strange pattern in the roof above, it was like a circle that was cut out in the roof and inside it was a cylinder of some sort, the same material as the roof, solid rock, how was it stuck up there no one knew but they knew it was there for a reason, now looking around there was a vine that leads right around the cave, following it Carlos found it made its way from the cylinder to the wall on the other side, it was tied to the branch of the log.

"Ahren, unpick that vine and let's see what happens", Carlos said standing back up prepared for what's to come, Ahren flew over once again and picked at the vine which came free from the branch, the vine loosening, soon a shutter in the roof came and the sound of rocks grinding together, looking up the cylinder started to move, falling, the rocky cylinder rushing past the guard as it crashed directly in the middle of the gap, standing upright tilting from left to right until it finally came to rest below, Carlos looked over the gap, it was pretty far down, the cylinder just squares of the two edges. A message was printed on top of the cylinder, Ahren flew down to see what it said.

"It says only the bravest can complete this task", Ahren said looking at Rafi,

"You will need to jump to the rock in the middle and then jump over to the other side and then push the log over", Karla stated,

"That doesn't seem to be an issue", Rafi said looking over the edge and then to the cylinder, studying it and judging, measuring the jump ahead, "Wish me luck", Rafi said running back and then ahead of the gap, he leaped into the air and landed onto the cylinder, the rock unbalanced and rocking, the guard gasp as they thought he'll fall off but Rafi regained his stance and jumped off onto the other side of the ledge, just in time for the rocky cylinder to topple over and crash down below, the guard cheered him on as Rafi looked back and blew a sigh of relief. He ran to the log and was able to push the log over allowing the rest of the guard to pass over. The guard ran off down the tunnel to the next task, while Rocky watched from behind.

"Oh if only it was all that easy".
