"Alright everyone. You're probably wondering why I gathered you all here."
"Alana, cut the shit. What's the deal?" Connor asked impatiently.
"Okay, okay. I got us tickets to see Book Of Mormon!" Alana held up the tickets with pride.
"Oh my god! Babe! How?" Zoe jumped up, ecstatic.
"I entered one of those little raffle ticket things, but I actually won!" She waved the tickets around frantically. "And I'm allowed to bring five people, including myself, so..." she hinted.
"Are you kidding me? That's amazing! I'd love to go!" Zoe picked up her girlfriend and swing her around, before they both collapsed into giggles.
"I've heard that it's a perfect representation of mormons and that there are no flaws whatsoever!" Jared added sarcastically. "But no seriously that's like my favorite musical. Besides spring awakening, of course. And heathers. And-"
"Oh don't forget-!" The girls starting adding in their favorite musicals, bickering a bit before Connor piped up.
"We get it, you're all musical memes." Connor leaned in closer to Evan, who was huddled over.
"Oh and you aren't?" Jared snapped back, smugly.
"Oh my god Jared, you catch me listening to Dead Girl Walking once-".
"Point proven. So you're in. Hansen? You like musicals, right?" The group turned to Evan.
"I-I-I uh. No... I'm... I'm Mormon?"
"Evan, baby, you're Jewish." Connor looked at Evan. "Are you okay?"
"I-I mean I'm um, busy that day."
"Evan... I didn't say what day it was."
"W-well I mean I assumed it was a day I was busy and I j-just. I um. Oh look my mom needs me home I-I-I've gotta go a-and-" He was still mumbling words as he sprinted out of the room, and presumably home.
They group stood awkwardly as they tried to process what just happened. Finally, Zoe broke the silence.
"Didn't you like, drive him here, Con? How's he gonna get home?"
"Oh shit." Connor quickly got up and ran after his boyfriend.
Connor eventually caught up to Evan.
"Evan! Evan, what the hell man? Why'd you run off like that?" Connor lowered his voice, and reached his hand out carefully to hold Evan's shoulder. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah no, I'm I'm fine I just um." Evan tried to quickly think of something, anything, that would convince Connor on why he didn't want to go.
"Do theaters freak out out?" Connor asked. "If they do, it's okay baby. I'll stay home with you and we can just hang out at your house or something."
Evan let out the breath he was holding. "Y-yeah yeah, b-but I want you to see the show. I-I know it's fun-funny..." he trailed off.
"But, don't you really like musicals and stuff? I'd feel bad if I saw a musical without you." Connor slowly started to guide them to his car, opening the door for Evan.
"O-oh uh, d-don't worry, I've watched the bootleg a bunch of times. I'll be fine, I promise."
Eventually, Connor dropped the topic, and Evan was thankful. He hated lying to his boyfriend and his friends. But he couldn't tell them.
Not yet.
"Everyone have their tickets?"
"Yeah, mom." Connor smiled sarcastically at Alana.
"Whatever, son."
"Call me son one more time!" Jared and Zoe said at the same time, high fiving and earning glares by other people in the theatre.
"Okay, okay guys. Come one, let's get our seats." Alana's mom ushered them over to the seats.
"I love this so much. Arnold is my favorite for obvious reasons." Jared whispered to Zoe.
"Why?" She whispered back. "You're both gay guys who lie to make them self seem cooler?"
"Guys, shush, it's about to start!" Alana whispered yelled at them.
Connor leaned back as the opening number, 'Hello', started. He was actually kinda excited to see the play, but he felt really bad for not staying home with Evan.
"Hello! Would you like to change religions? I have a free book written by Jesus!" Evan yelled on stage before getting yelled at.
Connor stat up in his seat, and turned to Jared, who had the same look on his face that Connor assumed he had. What the hell?
The girls looked at 'Arnold' and then looked at Connor.
Was... was that Evan?
Holy shit. Evan Hansen, Connors boyfriend with social anxiety, was playing an overly energetic lead in a musical.
And he was good.
After the show, the group ran to the back doors to great Evan when he left.
"EVAN HANSEN!" Jared yelled as Evan stepped out. Evan yelped in surprise and tried to go back into the back room, but was dragged out by Connor and Zoe.
"No no no you're gonna explained this mister!" Zoe scolded him before Evan burst into tears.
"I-I-I'm sorr- I'm so-so sorry I thought, I thought-" he sobbed out.
"Evan no, sweetheart, we aren't mad, it's okay sweetheart." Evan buried his head into Connor's chest, and Connor moved further away from the group.
Jared and the girls stood awkwardly while Connor tried to calm Evan down.
"I-I'm sorry I just, I just-" Connor shushed him. "You don't have to tell us right now."
He nodded his head and wiped his tears away and slowly moved back towards the group.
"I- I thought you- you guys would make fun of me, a-and I-I-I didn't, I'm sorry." Evans face turned bright red as he stared at the floor.
"Evan," Jared started. "Even though theatre is a sign up sheet for being called gay, we wouldn't make fun of you for being that good, Jesus."
"Jared did you just-" "Evan, you were amazing!" Alana cut off her girlfriend.
"And hilarious! Oh my god!" Jared let out a hug smile. "It's literally the funniest thing when you kept calling Nabulungi literally anything except her name."
"My favorite was necrophilia." Connor gave Evan a soft smile. "And I'm guessing Jared was Nintendo 64."
Jared faked a gasp. "How dare you assume my favorite?"
Connor gave him a deadpanned look, and Jared sighed.
"Okay yeah, you're right."
"But no, seriously Evan, that was amazing!" Alana piped up. "Now come on guys, you're all sleeping over so we can rant about the musical." She turned towards Evan. "Do you need a ride?"
"Actually Alana," Connor said, grabbing Evan by the waist and pulling him closer. "Evans riding with me, and I think that we are gonna skip out on the sleepover. Evan told me that he was really busy tonight, so I'll just drive him home.
She shrugged. "Your loss. Come on guys, my moms probably waiting for us!"
Connor started walking Evan to his car, and opened the door for Evan before climbing in himself.
"You know," Connor started talking, causing Evan to look at him.
"You looked really good in that uniform." He winked as Evan blushed.
Now he understood why they weren't sleeping over at Alana's.
