Part 36 - Love and grief

Rosaly

Rosaly returned home after her school day and observed the movement in the streets. There were many more people out of the house at that time, now that winter had gone away giving way to the color of spring, they seemed happier, their faces less pale, and they also seemed more willing to exercise, because she could see several bicycles through the park, people running, walking with their dogs, and Rosaly felt incredibly normal, participating in life outside of her apartment, without hiding in every corner, for fear of what or who she would meet along the way, but now it was as if all fears had disappeared and he could finally feel life as it was.

Yet she knew that Caio was still searching for her. She had not for a minute been wrong in thinking that he had given up, but the truth was that she no longer thought about it so much. Caio seemed so far removed from her reality now, that she could hardly remember his face.

Her days were filled with work and her nights with Shawn. They lived the life of almost a couple, for he had practically moved into her apartment, slept with her almost every night, and spent the weekends all their time together.

Living with Shawn was so easy. He was organized, helpful, and great company. Although he was used to the good things in life, he wasn't fussy at all, and within a short time had adapted to Rosaly's simple life, and seemed completely at ease in that small apartment that had become a haven of love for both of them.

Now that classes had resumed, Shawn would take her to school every day, and pick her up at the dance studio at night, because as the tour period was approaching, he would spend the day in the studio rehearsing, and they couldn't meet until after nine at night. And that was the moment Rosaly liked the most, because they prepared dinner together, then sat down to watch a movie, and slept hugging until the morning.

Rosaly had gotten used to landing Shawn nearby, waking up with him grabbing her waist, and having him at the table for breakfast. His presence had taken over her apartment, and his smell was everywhere, even on his pillow Shawn had left his mark. On some nights, when he couldn't be with her, Rosaly slept hugging on his pillow, so she had the false illusion that he was there.

She smiled as she remembered those moments, then turned those thoughts away and turned the street corner that led to her apartment, There was a bakery a meter from the corner where Rosaly made her usual stop to. buy the chocolate croissants that Shawn loved. Soon, she left the bakery and walked to her apartment, which was a few feet away.

As soon as she entered, she went to the kitchen to prepare her lunch. She made a simple salad and grilled meat. She wasn't very hungry that day. After lunch, she lay down on the couch to rest for a while, and was almost taking a nap when she heard the bell ring. Who could it be at that hour? She wasn't expecting anyone. She opened the door a little afraid, that was a feeling she couldn't get rid of. Whenever someone knocked on her door she felt her heart squeeze as if she sensed some danger, but until now her fears had only been a figment of my imagination.

She opened the door and was surprised to see Lexy with her arms folded, looking at her questioningly.

- Aren't you gonna invite me in? - She asked without smiling.

- Sure, be my guest. - Rosaly answered a little unsavory.

Lexy sat down in the first seat she could find, and then asked in a somewhat harsh voice:

- What's this about you quitting? You never told me you intended to quit your job at the Weekend.

- Didn't John explain what happened?

- Not exactly. The only thing he told me was that you weren't happy with your work anymore, so you quit. I didn't actually believe that story, but you know John, getting something out of him is like trying to get milk from stone. So I decided to come down here and find out my own version of what happened. - Rosaly sighed and said half disgustingly:

-I don't know if I want to talk about it.

- Please, Rosely. If there's something going on I need to know.- Rosaly saw her friend's pleading expression and decided to tell it all at once.

She reported every detail without omitting anything, and when she got to the end of the story, Lexy looked at her too shocked to talk.

- How could he? - Lexy's voice sounded full of indignation. - I never thought John would be capable of something like this. What an asshole.

- Relax, Lexy. I don't think John's a bad person, I just think he's lost his mind from drinking. - Rosaly said to calm her friend down.

- I can't believe you're trying to find excuses for John's scumbag behaviour. Sober or not, he had no right to. - Lexy's face was red with rage, and she was twisting her hands nervously.

- I know you're right, and I'm not trying to excuse John's cheeky behavior, which is exactly why I quit. I couldn't work for someone I don't trust anymore. - Rosaly hadn't told Lexy about Caioyet, so she omitted the main reason for her resignation.

- Why didn't you tell me, Rosely? I thought we were friends. - Lexy said sadly.

- I didn't want to bother her with that problem, and I didn't want to see you disappointed in John either.- Rosaly explained to her friend that she still seemed visibly upset about the whole thing.

- I appreciate your concern, but I wish I'd known the truth before. I don't even know how I'm gonna look at John now.

- Lexy, I don't want you to get hurt because of me. I know you need this job. - Lexy lived with her mother and three sisters younger than her. Her father had passed away as she was a teenager, and she helped support the house with the salary she made at the diner.

- Don't worry, I don't intend to get into trouble, because as you said yourself, I need this job. But and  you? What are you gonna do now that you've given up one of your jobs? Lexy wanted to know.

- Well, I haven't given it much thought. - Rosaly threw a long lock of her curly hair back. - Shawn offered me a job, but I haven't made up my mind yet.

- What? Shawn Mendes offered you a job and you don't know if you're gonna take it?- Lexy rolled her incredibly brown eyes. - Girl, you're so lucky and you don't know it yet. What's there to think about? Have you gone crazy or what?

- Lexy, Shawn is my boyfriend. I don't know if we could work together. - Rosaly tried to explain her point of view to Lexy who was shaking her head without really understanding why Rosaly was wasting an opportunity like that.

- Rosaly, thousands of people would cut off a finger for a chance like that, and you're throwing away a golden opportunity. - Rosaly watched Lexy get up from the couch and walk around the room restlessly. Was the friend right? Was she throwing out the window the chance to get a great job? For many girls that would be a dream job, especially since it was related to someone as famous and wanted as Shawn Mendes. But Rosaly saw this opportunity with different eyes. Of course it was a very interesting job, and the salary she was offered was three times as much as she had earned as a waitress in the last year, but it was also a double-edged sword, because if her relationship with Shawn were to fail, working with him could become intolerable, so she didn't want to mix things up.

- I don't know, Lexy. As attractive as this job is in my eyes, there's this issue of me being emotionally involved with Shawn, and if it doesn't work out?

- Rosely, for God's sake, you think too much. Just take the job and leave your assumptions for later. - Lexy said sitting on the couch next to Rosaly again.

- I'll think about it, because I have to make up my mind about it. Shawn is waiting for my answer. - Rosaly said thoughtfully Soon, she dispelled the doubts that still popped into her head about it, turned to Lexy smiling and asked:

- How about we continue our conversation in the kitchen? Can I get you something to drink?

-Some juice is great. - Lexy answered.

They both went to the kitchen, where Rosaly prepared an orange juice, which they took sitting at the table while they talked.

-  So,  how  is your relationship with Shawn Mendes  going? -Rosaly saw the curiosity shine in her friend's eyes. -Yeah.

-We're doing great. Shawn is amazing and even took me to meet his sister and mother. - Rosaly laughed when Lexy rolled her surprised eyes.

-So  are you guys  already at this relationship level? -Yeah. Girl, I'm impressed. He seems to really like you. Taking his girlfriend to meet his family is a big step in a boy's life. - Rosaly shook her head hearing her friend's words. Lexy and his free psychology were unbeatable.

- And how do you feel about all this? Is it worth it to you?- Rosaly stayed a second in silence, as if she weighed her own words, then she answered with the sincerity of her heart.

- This is the first time I've really fallen in love. The other relationships I've had have been nothing but physical attraction. - and that included Caio, she thought. It had taken her a while to admit that she had never really loved him, she had only let herself be carried away by the fantasy of what it was like to have a man like that in her life. But Shawn was real, it wasn't just an illusion of her heart, and the most important thing was that he loved her, too, and Rosaly could hardly believe that was possible. - It's logical there's a physical factor between us, Lexy, but it's different. I can't explain exactly how I feel when I'm with him, it's almost as if I'm living a dream with my eyes open.

- I'm so happy to see you like this, Rosely, and I can see how good Shawn's been doing you. I don't know him personally, but he always seemed like a wonderful guy with a sweet look and a sincere smile. Qualities so rare in the world he lives in. We see so much pride and self-centeredness in these famous people who attend the Weekend. - Lexy poured himself some more juice while Rosaly agreed with her.

- It's true, Lexy. Shawn became famous very early on, and it would be natural to imagine he would be arrogant or full of himself. But he's the opposite of all that. And after I met his family, I understood where that simple yet striking personality comes from. - Rosaly's gaze softened as she talked about Shawn. Her spirit was so wrapped up in how she felt about him that even her voice denounced how much she was in love.

-From what I can see, Shawn Mendes really touched your heart. - Rosaly just laughed in agreement with her head.

- Honey, I'd love to stay longer, but I need to go home. I have a million things to do. - Lexy said heading for the door.

- Too bad, Lexy. I wish you'd stay a little longer. I miss our conversations. - Rosaly hugged her friend while saying goodbye.

- Me too, honey. - Lexy gave her the hug back with affection.

Suddenly Rosaly remembered Shawn's mom's party on Saturday and asked:

- What are you doing next Saturday night? Wouldn't you like to go to a party with me?

- I can't. I made an appointment with a beautiful blonde I met at a club last weekend. He's taking me to dinner -Lexy answered, giving him a malicious wink. And Rosaly understood they'd have a lot more than dinner. - Maybe next time you can't introduce me to someone interesting.

- You got it. - Rosaly laughed, thinking about Brian, Shawn's friend. She was pretty sure he and Lexy would get along just fine.

With her friend leaving, Rosaly was alone again. She checked her messages. There were two from Shawn, who answered quickly, got ready and went to the dance studio where she stayed until nine o'clock at night. As she walked out the front door, she saw that Shawn was waiting for her outside. He had parked his car right in front of the studio, and watched her come towards him with her usual wonderful smile. How she loved to look at him. That breathtaking face was her inspiration. Rosaly might have been exhausted, but she always regained her energy when Shawn was around.

- How much I missed you," he said, embracing her warmly.

- I missed you, too. How was your day?- she asked with her arms still around his waist.

- My day was quite productive," he replied kissing the top of her head.

- You look tired. - Rosaly said touching Shawn's face lovingly.

- Yes. I had to rehearse the same song for hours on end because we had a technical problem with the sound equipment. Luckily we were able to get them on time.-he smiled and wrinkles of tiredness formed around his eyes.

- So let's go home. - Rosaly said and Shawn agreed with his head.

They entered Shawn's Porsh and got to Rosaly's apartment quickly. They showered together, then ate the pizza Shawn had ordered over the phone, and sat on the living room couch to watch one of Rosaly's favorite classics. Only five minutes had passed when Rosaly looked at Shawn and noticed that he had fallen asleep with his head on his lap. Amidst affectionate kisses, she woke him up, taking his hand and taking him to her room. They lay on the bed hugged and Shawn fell asleep again almost immediately.

Rosaly watched him sleep as he listened to his regular breathing. Those weeks before the tour were always painful for Shawn, as he spent the day working exhaustively on the songs that would be sung at the shows, reviewing every detail of each performance for hours on end. He had told her about the anxiety crises that often bordered on panic, and Rosaly was too concerned about her boyfriend's mental and physical health, even though he said he was fine, she knew very well how far these emotional crises could lead someone. Luckily, she knew massage techniques for relaxation that she intended to use with Shawn in case he went through a period of great stress.

Moving the thoughts that were taking over her head at that moment, Rosaly turned sideways, hugged her boyfriend, and fell asleep quietly, spending a quiet, dreamless night.
