Chapter 4
It's a Saturday night and I'm about ready to crash for the evening, I have an early shift at the station in the morning. I slip out of the bathroom in my comfortable black satin pajama set. This apartment is as tropical as they come. Ruby claims she's always cold and needs it to be set as if we were living on a tropical island. I hurry across the living room and open my bedroom door ready to snuggle under my covers and nearly have a heart attack when I find someone's cell lighting up their face on my bed. I flip on the light switch and casually sitting on my bed with his boots just hanging off the edge is Killian.
"Uh – excuse me?"
He looks up from his cell.
"Oh – Swan – this is your room? Tink said..."
"GET OUT!" I yell.
He doesn't look startled, everything about his demeanor is calm. He slowly shuts off the screen of his phone and slips it into his back jean pocket. He stands and dusts off his black jeans, adjust his green shirt – oh so he does own another color other than black. He strolls over to me with a cocky grin on his face like he's a bit too happy he ran into me like this – like this, Shit! I cover myself noting that he can probably see everything through the top part of my pajamas. My arms are crossed tightly over my chest as he stands in front of me. He's so close I can feel the heat of him.
"Your cars out front Swan," he says.
I'm not staring at his face, but my eyes are on his mouth. I can't look up at him because I'm so embarrassed. I wonder what Tink told him, maybe she said that this was her room just to get a rise out of me. Ugh – I need to remember to confront her later.
"Thanks," I say aggravated.
He steps a centimeter closer and it's like he's breathing down my neck. I keep my eyes straight ahead still not wanting to meet his. I can feel the weight of his stare on me and it's making me uncomfortable. I'd love more than anything to knee him in the balls right about now, anything to get him away from me.
"You know Emma," he says using my first name.
A shiver runs down my spine as he does, his lips dangerously close to my ear.
"Maybe I should come around more on Saturday nights if your gonna wear those pajamas, maybe we can I don't know – what do they call it now a days... Netflix and chill," he says.
My mouth falls open and I know I have a witty comeback buried somewhere in there, but yet nothing is coming out. I make the mistake of looking up into his blue eyes. They remind me of the ocean on a calm day – oh Jesus Christ Emma listen to yourself. I start to speak but it's too late he's already walked away and I don't have it in me to chase him down to give him a piece of my mind.
Sunday morning flies by and so does my shift at the station. I'm sitting with Ruby at Granny's she's on her fifteen minute break, and I just got out of work. Her eyes are wide and she covers her mouth like she wants to laugh. I just told her the story about Killian.
"I'm sorry."
She tries her hardest to suppress a giggle, but can't. I let out a sigh and smile just a bit as I lift the mug of hot cocoa to my lips.
"You want to know what I think?"
I set my mug down and stare at her.
"I think you should live a little."
"What?" I do live!"I protest
If I wasn't sitting down I'd probably stomp my foot like a five year old.
"What I mean is - like when was the last time you flirted with a guy?"
My eyes widen and I blow air through my lips.
"I flirt," I defend myself.
She narrows her brows at me and shakes her head.
"What? I do!"
I nearly shriek as the door to Granny's chimes alerting us that someone has entered the small diner. I look up and standing in the doorway looking towards the counter is Killian.
"It's like god is laughing at me," I say.
Confusion settles on Ruby's face. She turns her head to see what I'm talking about and snickers. Her arm is about to wave in the air calling for his attention. I grab her arm and the hot cocoa in the mug spills all over the table dripping hot water all over my pants.
"Ow, shit!"
I hop up out of my seat like I've been stung by a bee. I get up so fast that I hit my leg on the table.
"Ow!" I moan again, jumping around like an idiot.
Ruby takes some towels and starts wiping down the table. I grab some for myself and start patting my leg down. I make the mistake of looking over at Killian and when I do he's staring at me grinning and shaking his head. Embarrassed I sit back down and continue to wipe the table without peering in that direction again.
After my lovely evening at Granny's I head home. My car is really working nicely and I'm thankful Killian fixed it, but hell, now it's like I might actually have to be nice to him. Him and his crude humor. Seriously who does he think he is? I'm sure women just love hearing his ridiculous comments, and they probably love when he stands just over them. That guy needs to respect other people's personal bubble. It's almost like he doesn't know how. I enter the apartment to see Tink sitting on the couch watching something on TV.
"Hey," I call over to her.
"Oh, hey Emma," she says waving.
I set my keys down in the bowl on the table near the door and kick off my shoes. It's been a long day and I'm honestly ready to crash. Tomorrow not only do I have to deal with Mr. Jones for an hour, but Ruby insisted I join the Fencing club at school. Fencing, like we're in the middle ages or something. She begged and pleaded until I said yes, and when I finally caved she told me I wouldn't regret it.
"Why was Killian in my room last night?"
Tink pauses what she's watching and stares up at me. She's all comfortable in her green pajamas and looks at me annoyed like I interrupted her alone time. She fixes her bun and continues to stare me down.
"I don't know, you tell me," she says.
"He said you had something to do with it," I say.
She looks at me harder trying to keep a straight face, but I know when someone is lying, it's a skill I've had for a while.
"Well? That's my personal space and his dirty ass was sitting on my bed. Jesus Tink I was practically naked!"
"Maybe you should wear less scandalous pajamas."
I tug at the ends of my hair, this conversation is going nowhere. I let out a growl and stomp over to my room.
"Emma wait," she says.
With one hand on the door handle, I turn to face her.
"Look I'm sorry, he came by with your car and I told him to wait up here. I think he wandered into that room on his own, I honestly didn't tell him it was yours."
"But you let him in and just left him?"
"Yeah," she says. "Killian's my friend."
"What I'd like to know is how someone like him ended up a TA," I cross my arms at my chest.
"Let's just say if he wasn't doing it he wouldn't be here right now," she says.
"And what's that supposed to mean?" I ask her.
She sighs and fixes her bun again.
"It's not my story to tell," she says.
She turns the TV off, stands, stretches and yawns. She looks like she's ready to call it a night, but I'm so not ready.
"You can't just say things like that and then walk away."
She starts walking to the other side of the apartment where her room is.
"I can and I will. I'm serious Emma it's not my story to tell and all I can say is that Killian has a past," she says.
"So basically I need to stay away from him because he's – what, dangerous?"
She laughs and opens her bedroom door. I continue to stare her down until she turns around to face me.
"Something like that," she says. "He's trying though," she says.
"I'll be more than happy to stay far away, I've been there done that and it wasn't pretty."
"Do you like him?" she questions.
From the outside Tink looks like a sweet little angel, she's petite with the cutest little face, but deep down she's like a little fireball ready to unleash her flames on the world.
"Hell no! It's almost like I can't get away from him he just shows up everywhere I am, like someone is playing a trick on me."
Tink laughs in her sweet way and I have to hold back wanting to hit her too.
"That's Killian for you. Look I'd love to stand here and chat all night about our little friend, but I've got an early class tomorrow."
I opened my mouth to say more, but her door closes softly behind her before I even get the chance.
