Chapter 10
I try my hardest to avoid eye contact with Killian as we leave the ER. He places his hand on my lower back as we walk out of the peach curtains.
"Siblings don't put their hands on the small of someone's back as they walk away," I whisper.
Killian snorts and I can feel his eyes on me as he squeezes me closer.
"Oh Swan, you have been reading far too many romance novels," he chuckles.
"Never read one a day in my life," I say.
"I'm sure you have a pile of dirty books hidden under that bed of yours," he teases.
I laugh, my anxiety from the stitches slowly fading. I'd need to return to follow up and have my stitches removed, but for now I just need to take care of the wound on my own till then. He gave me a small amount of painkillers to lessen the throb in my cheek. I don't get giddy on them either, I get sleepy. My head droops slightly onto his shoulder and I swear I hear his breath catch in his throat.
"What are you doing Swan? Siblings definitely don't walk around like this," he chuckles.
"Sleepy," I say not giving a crap in this very moment.
"You just want me to carry you again," he flirts.
I shove him with my hip and then completely regret it a second later. He gives a warm chuckle and pulls me closer to him to keep me from slouching.
"You know me all too well," I joke.
We reach my car and he pulls the keys from his pocket, first opening the passenger door and helping me in. I watch him walk around, but my mind is starting to slip into nothingness and by the time I hear the door close my eyes shut. I hear him laugh to himself as he starts the engine.
A little while later I can feel myself being lifted from my seat, but my body seems to be far too tired to respond to anything going on. I hear him grunt as he lifts me from the car. Instead of tossing me over his shoulder I'm cradled in his warm arms with my head against his shoulder. I hear the car door shut as he walks towards the apartment. He's trying to keep his breathing steady. Beneath my ear I can hear the pounding of his heart.
The apartment door swing open and I hear Ruby gasping.
"Did you kill her?" she asks.
I would laugh if I were conscious, but I'm so looped on painkillers that I can't be bothered to respond.
"Funny Ruby, they gave her some painkillers," he says.
"Don't look at me like that," I hear him say.
Somehow I know he's not talking to Ruby. I hear the sound of my bedroom door opening and closing and my body reacts to the fact that he's here in my room behind a closed door. Carefully he lowers me to the bed and attempts to take off my jacket. I feel flutters low and hate that I do, but tonight I can blame it on the painkillers, they make me feel weird things.
For a minute I think he's already left until my bed dips a bit from his weight. He's sitting close that I can feel the heat of his body on mine.
"What are you doing to me Swan?" he asks.
Confusion hits me, and once again I'm blaming it on my incredibly sleep state. I swear I feel him move some hair from my face and tuck it behind my ear. My door flies open.
"Bloody hell," he says.
I hear Tink's voice, but it sounds muffled as his does now too. I feel the warmth disappears and the bed lift. Footsteps and voices blur together as sleep takes over my body.
