Some people like to count the steps that led to their mistakes that determined the fate of their future, if Keith had to do the same he would simply start at the day he met Shiro at college. He was the person who had introduced him to his current friend group, to Lance.
His next point would be joining the group for their party at Shiro and Allura's home where his locket first opened. That was definitely something that led him to where was at in his life. Then last night when he had showed Lance various shapes in the stars, it was something that his foster father told him to only show to those most dear to him...another thing was when Lance bit his neck leading to his frustration at work and the marker flying into his soulmates eyes. And now he stood motionless in front of his boss outside of his office where Lance socialized to his coworkers inside, cracking jokes about stupid stuff as he held a bag of ice to his eye.
"Keith, what the hell was that? You're the only detective in this agency that I have high respects for because you always keep your cool," Natasha tapped her boot on the wooden floor in impatience, her red eyebrows dipped into a deep frown while her green eyes burned in anger.
Keith clenched his jaw as he bowed his head to his boss apologetically. "I'm sorry Natasha, the group was getting me wound up and I have a lot of business at home to tend to so it is just stress build up. I promise that my mistake will not happen again," He gulped down his nervousness and squeezed his eyes shut as he awaited for Natasha to scold him even more.
"Stand up Keith, that's such an embarrassing pose for your soulmate to see," She sighed quietly.
Keith looked up at her to see a kind smile on her face, "He told me when I was walking him over to your office. He said he wanted to apologize about something he did yesterday that made you upset. So," she nodded her head towards the office marked with 'Senior Detective Kogane' and fixed her hair. "Go and work from home, Irene has been working all night to gather all the evidence she can for you so let her continue this...it is good training after all."
Keith felt his nervousness fade as he let out a small breath of relief. "Thank you Natasha, but I will never make that same mistake again so please do not look down on me for my mistakes in the past."
"Shut up and go home Keith, I'll work with those three to make sure you get some progress done. Go home and relax tonight," Natasha flicked her hair back and opened the door to Keith's office to show the group having more fun than they're supposed to inside.
Irene was laughing loudly as she covered her light blush with her hand, clearly flustered as Lance winked at her with his good eye. Antonio was now drawing immature stuff across the board for the fun of it all the while Harry surfed the internet on Keith's computer. Lance was leaning down slightly as he flirted with Irene, his eyebrows raised in anticipation and his shit eating grin was wide.
Keith felt anger towards the two of them as he cleared his throat, instantly stopping everyone from what they were doing. "Lance, let's go home," Keith growled as he shot Irene a wanting glare.
The girls grey eyes widened as she looked away from Lance in shame. "But I was just flirting with your beautiful young assistant," Lance chimed as he pushed his hair back with a smile.
Keith felt himself growing jealous of the attention his partner was getting each second Lance took to describe her 'beauty' in front of Keith. He grabbed his red jacket off of his desk and grabbed Lance's hand tightly without consideration of where they were. "Let's go, they have important work Lance." Keith growled.
"Yeah I'm right here so she can work on getting my cl-" before he could finish the sentence Keith tugged him away from his partner causing the tall man to stumble and drop his bag of ice. "Keith what the hell?" He exclaimed looking down at him in anger.
Keith tried to hide his blush as he met those deep blue eyes that belonged only to Lance. He wanted to have a redo of the night before, he wanted to go back and experience everything once more. The touch of Lance's lips against his neck had been so invigorating that he needed to feel it even more. The thought of him sharing that action with anyone but him made him want to hold onto Lance and claim him as his own until the end of time. Is this jealousy? He asked himself before he looked down at his feet in shame. He was jealous of his own partner, he was jealous he was the one not getting Lance's attention.
"Come on..." Lance mumbled before he began to drag Keith out the door and passed Natasha who gave him a simple wink and a nonchalant thumbs up. He was dragged all the way out to his car before Lance stopped for Keith to hand him the key. "Let me drive back home, you're too distracted."
Keith slowly nodded and pulled his keys out from his back pocket and dropped them into Lance's palm carefully. The two of then got into the car silence and Keith buckled himself in securely, he absolutely hated the thought of the man driving his car. He snuggled up against the car door for comfort and hiked the scarf above his nose. Lance shut his door and sighed quietly. What did the vase look like? It was crystal for a fact but the color was either blue or green. Keith began thinking back to the picture of the stolen vase in order to keep his mind off things but he was rudely interrupted when Lance tugged at Irene's scarf gently in order to pull it down from his neck and onto his lap, exposing the bite mark that Lance had left the night before.
His blue eyes looked horrified as he pointed at it in concern, "Did I really do that?" He asked Keith with confusion.
He turned bright pink and covered it up with his hands. "It's nothing, don't worry about it Lance." Keith stated as he tried to hide his face.
"It looks like I bit you hard though..." Lance kept carrying out the conversation as he then began to lean in close to Keith. "I'm sorry Keith," Lance apologized before he gently kissed Keith's cheek.
The action alone made Keith turn bright red and his heart skip more than just a beat. He was surprised, nervous, happy and everything in between when he felt his soulmate kiss him so softly compared to last night; however it didn't give him the same feeling as before which he wanted desperately to feel once more. His purple eyes slowly peeled from the window and glanced over at Lance who looked upset as he twisted the key in the ignition, his chocolate brown eyes brows were knitted together and his bottom lip was pushed out in his signature pout.
Keith slowly pushed himself to sit straight in his seat and felt himself smile warmly as he reached over and placed a hand on Lance's shoulder. His blue eyes looked over at him just as the car started in a low rumble. "I don't mind it, and anyways," Keith moved his hand away slowly, hoping that he wasn't being weird. "I do believe in an eye for an eye."
Lance's face exploded into red, even his ears were bright. "O-oh!" Lance squeaked in surprise and Keith silently cursed at himself for being so stupid. "We're uh...we're going to Allura and Shiro's house so...don't make it noticeable." He mumbled and pulled his blue T-shirt and his dark green jacket off of his shoulder slowly in order to expose the tanned skin under it, inviting Keith to make them even after he bit his neck.
Keith honestly had no idea what to do, he hasn't done anything like that before in his life. Sure he dated his fair share of boys but this was different, he didn't have to do anything for his past exes since they were never meant to be and they never did a thing for him; but Lance was different. He never felt the butterflies in his stomach like he did now, he never felt his heart skip a beat, he never even thought twice about wanting to be with him. Lance truly was his soulmate and fate had just played a sick game on the two which actually brought them closer together than before. Gulping down air Keith looked up to see Lance had his eyes squeezed shut, his head turned away and his cheeks were still burning red with his large ears. Keith didn't want to take advantage of him like that even if he was kindly offering to even the playing ground, he just wanted Lance to be happy. He slowly leaned forward, trying to get around the stick shift without getting stuck on it and then he buried his face into the crook of Lance's neck where he simply wrapped his arms around him and hugged him closely. He didn't feel it would be okay to kiss him so selfishly just because he wanted to feel the same things he felt last night, he wanted that but more than anything he wanted Lance to be happy in this relationship they were beginning together.
"I don't care..." Keith mumbled as he took in his soulmates scent, he smelt of that girly shampoo; TeaTree. It was his favorite smell now.
He felt Lance move his body so that he sat with his back against the car door and his right leg up on the leather seat in order so that Lance could hug him back gently. "Can I...ask you a question?" He asked quietly, voice tinged with nervousness which was something the both of them felt a lot when together.
Keith held him tighter as he felt his leg brush against his side softly, "Anything."
"Will you..." A moments hesitation felt like a thousand years of suffering as the silence was unbearable, "will you be my official boyfriend?" He asked and made Keith sit up too quickly causing him to bang his head on the roof.
"W-what!" He exclaimed, looking down at Lance as he fixed his shirt.
Lance shrugged slightly before looking up to meet Keith's eyes. "We're soulmates so we're eventually going to be married right? So, why not make it official and just call me your partner."
Keith swallowed down his sudden awkwardness as he ignored the pain in the back of his head. Lance wants me to be his boyfriend? Me? Even if he asked himself, he still thought it wasn't real, that his mind was playing cruel tricks on him as he stared down at Lance. Do I say yes? But it was only two days ago when I had an undying hatred for him... Do I... Do I love him now that I know he's the one for me? Love was a strong word for what Keith was feeling. Maybe it was more of a 'like' than love. Though he never felt love in his life so he couldn't be the judge of that.
He sucked in a deep breath and began to reply, "I mean yeah sure, I don't really understand the concept of loving others that much so I won't be all that great of a boyfriend. I also don't understand stupid quirks people have like how they have to do certain things before doing other actions like separating their food before eating it and-"
Lance squished Keith's cheeks together to silence him like he had done before. He looked mildly annoyed by how Keith began to ramble about stupid stuff like pet peeves and he simply stared at the man sitting on top of him like he was just another person. "I don't mind you have your issues, everyone has problems and to be in a relationship both of you have to be open minded to the other. I will help you in anyway I can Keith, as long as you let me."
As long as I let HIM? Keith allowed those words to sink into his thoughts as he continued to stare down at Lance, considering the pros and cons of calling this idiot his boyfriend. The good that could come of it was that he could always start his day off with a smile, he could hear Lance singing like an idiot, dance like an idiot and he wouldn't have to wake up alone anymore. The cons were just as easy to think of, they could possibly not get alone like before, his coworkers might think lowly of him, he would have to deal with an immature adult and he would have to juggle his job and Lance. He felt like he should've said no including now when he had such an important case where they've made little to no progress on but his mouth said otherwise as he leaned down and kissed Lance's lips gently.
He felt Lance lean back to get away so he instantly pulled back in shame. "S-sorry...that was my way of saying yes." Keith mumbled in embarrassment.
"I only pulled away because if I kissed you back I wouldn't be able to hold myself back and," Lance chuckled slightly as he glanced out the window, "your partner is walking over here with files."
Keith looked up in confusion and caught sight of Irene looking down at her feet as she crossed the parking lot with a stack of files. He groaned in frustration as he lowered his head down into the crook of Lance's neck. "Why can't I just be left alone!" He whined
"Because you have a job mullet head," Lance stated as he gently pushed Keith away to roll down the window for Irene to poke her head inside.
"I'm sorry for interrupting sir," she slowly pushed the various stacks of manilla folders inside and gave Keith an apologetic look. "Miss Russell told me to give this to you before you left. She said it was everything they've gathered on the killer like how they kill, what evidence they found in the house and even The footprint from the scene even though it really doesn't provide much. The victims causes of deaths are in here too, have a good day Mister Kogane," Irene politely bowed her head and handed the folders to Keith before she quickly walked away back into the building.
"So much for a little amount of leads to the killer," Keith sighed despondently as he set the stack on the floor.
"Well, you're going to be up all night reading those so we should hurry and visit Allura and Shiro then shouldn't we?" Lance rubbed the top of Keith's head trying to cheer him as as he pulled out of the parking space.
Keith just wanted to go home and sleep not go to someone else's house. He looked over at Lance and nodded. "Yeah I guess so."
