• i want to acknowledge that pirates weren't just 'arrr me treasure' and eyepatches, they were actually really terrible people who murdered and mutilated indiscriminately. i think a lot of us grew up with the picture of swashbuckling anti-heroes that Pirates of the Caribbean taught us, and i want to acknowledge that i wrote my characters in this unrealistic fashion. i don't mean to glorify or romanticize the reality of piracy.
