Day 5 | Manhattan- The Met & "Cats"

Tuesday, August 15 | 11:07 pm
Another long day without stops at the hotel! It was fun, though!!

We ate our bagels this morning from Whole Foods, and headed out at a leisurely pace. We were supposed to meet with some friends at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, my friend Amy and her mom, at 11:30. We took the subway to get to the museum, which has a pretty dramatic entrance!

After looking around for an hour or so at various galleries, we met up with them in the medieval art section. (Haha, get it? We met with them in the Met? XD Sorry I noticed it so I had too)

The group walking through the medieval galleries for a little while, before my family broke off to have lunch, since they'd already eaten, at the Petrie Court Cafe. I ate a good sandwich there, but it's not a quick-bite place. We joined together with Amy and her mom again at the contemporary and modern art. Amy, my dad, and I looked around there a little, before Amy and I spilt off to go look at some European paintings (Amy's mom texted to say we should see the "money's," which was an autocorrect of a name which I can't remember now XD). We also walked down to the arms and armory section, with a few stops along the way. Pictures were allowed in here (except for "commercial use," which my dad said would be selling them), so I took a few!

European Sculpture and Decorative Arts galleries.

Arms and Armor galleries.

At 4, we all met up with Amy's mom's cousin and her son, Jesse, who is good friends with Amy. The larger group walked and took the subway down to Times Square, because wanted to see what shows were available at the TKTS booth. (they sell last minute tickets at half price) After some discussion and trying to figure what everyone wanted, we eventually decided that my mom, Amy's mom, Jesse, and his mom would all go see Beautiful, the musical about Carole King. Amy, my dad, and I would see Cats. Amy and I are both cat fanatics, so this would be fun for us.

That decided, we still needed dinner, so we found a Thai place to eat at not far from Times Square. On the walk there, I had an amazing discovery. Check out my "And Everything Else" book in a little to see what it is because I think I'm gonna rant for a while and I seriously need to get this published. XD :)

Anyway, the food was good! I had a salmon pita, which was tasty despite my initial doubts. My dad and I wanted to run back to the hotel to change which caused our group to literally run to the theater in order to make the show in time!

The set was awesome. It basically looked like a junkyard, which lots of little holes for the cats to climb in and out of. We had good seats, too- maybe sixth row on the mezzanine, center section. The show was very fun, I loved it! The songs were catchy, the dances very cat-like and energetic, and the characters all had... well, character! A few times cats climbed up to the mezzanine  from the stage and stalked about right behind Amy and I. The lighting crew did an amazing job, because there were so many special effects, spotlights, and mood lighting, that it seems like something wouldn't go right. Yet everything was perfectly timed. Wow.

During intermission you could go up on stage and get pictures with Old Deuteronomy, a large, fluffy, wise old father-figure cat. So many people wanted to go up he eventually started taking selfies from wherever you were standing, which went a lot faster. Amy and I got a few. Here he is posing.

Here's the set.

Afterwards, we bought some merch! I got the Cat's shirt and Amy got the sheet music.

We saw people standing by the stage door, and realized they were getting autographs! So we got some. :)

I'm pretty sure top right is Zachary Downer (Mistoffelees. Song was "Magical Mister Mistoffelees." Might have me been my favorite!!), top left is Sarah Marie Jenkins (tap-dancing Jennyanydots), right middle is Kolton Krouse (Carbuckety. Could do toe-touches), left lower is Jessica Cohen (Sillabub. Sang part of "Memory."), and I'm not actual sure who the lowest middle was. Sometimes they're hard to read, and nothing looks like this one.

Anyways, we walked back to Times Square to meet with the other group. My family walked back to the hotel and the rest went to Jesse/mom's house. Well, it's been a fun day. G'night!
