Postmortem Armies
Our Terracotta warriors tour guide explains that the emperor spent part of his life driving slaves to complete his tomb to have an army to guard him in the afterlife. The bricks laid on the floor were of top quality. If they weren't the emperor would kill the brick maker. Some warriors were archers or cavalry. Their eyes and hair, all different.
Today's warriors are puzzles, shattered by past enemy raids and parts of the tomb burned. Each year, more will be rebuilt and on display as the number of pits increases. Some are left to remain in situ. Reminders.
