Biking through Bagan on a dry, dusty afternoon, it's hard to imagine two million people living here at its peak.

2,200 of approximately 10, 000 temples remain, marking King Anawratha's adoption of Theravada Buddhism in the 11th century.

Some are small, intimate, deserted.

Others have more visitors.

Vendors explain their paintings for sale and the 13th century "grandfather" Buddha encasing a smaller 11th century statue.

Recent renovations and new construction on site after earthquakes and war keep the area from the world heritage list.

Temples offer sweeping views from the top. Brown, white, and gold stupas climb out from the plain.
