Beijing makes us miss central heating. For lunch, my friend takes us to a local dumpling shop. An awkward vinyl door cover tries to block cold outside air. She uses an app to translate the menu. Jealous!

The staff are used to her not speaking Chinese. As a Korean woman, she's often mistaken for a local. We get tasty meat, plus egg and leak dumplings and an eggplant dish steeped in sweet, savoury sauce we devour.

She returns to work and we stay near her water heater and the shower, to clean up and bask in the heat lamps' glory.
