"Alexander, do you mind coming here?"

Alex stopped talking to the secretary, waving goodbye with a small smile on his face. He walked into his father's office, the warm atmosphere his father made wrapping up in a comfortable embrace. His father was always such a kind man.

Everyone loved him.

"Dad?"

James Kirk looked up, his warm gray eyes making contact with Alex's honey colored eyes. James had a frown on his face, which was very weird coming from his father.

James was never one to be sad. Alex has never seen his father sad before, especially when his mom died. James stayed strong for everyone yet he never showed his weaknesses.

Even the strongest superhero has their weaknesses.

"What's the matter, Dad?"

James sighed, looking down at the file in front of him. After doing that for an hour or so, he looked back at his son. The frown on his face made his laugh lines and wrinkles on his forehead and his graying hair more prominent, making him look older when he was a mere forty three years old. Alex was becoming worried more.

His dad was never sad so why now?

"My next client. He's far too traumatized to come here. He's on the first floor, but it's a practically a war between his parents. He refusing to come up here. Do you mind getting him?"

"Not all, Dad. I'll be right back."

Alex left, being used to this happening. This happened all the time with clients, but Alex couldn't understand why his father was so sad with this one. Why is he so sad now?

"Oh, hi Alex!"

"Alex, hi!"

"Alex, are you free this afternoon?!"

Alex rolled his eyes, knowing that came from the heteronormative and straight girls that would do anything to get him to date them. It's seems like they cannot grasp the concept that he is gay and has no interest in them. When they found he was gay, however, he always got:

"Why are the hot ones always gay?!"

Or

"I finally have a gay friend! I found my own gay friend! Tell me, do you think this is my color?

Or his personal favorite:

"You're gay?! I feel sorry for your father. Poor thing. He wants a daughter-in-law, not a fa-"

That's when the elevator doors opened, bringing Alex to the first floor. At first he heard nothing, then...

"Mitch, you got to go, son. That's what the doctor said."

Alex walked to the entrance, two older men and a teenaged boy beat the entrance. The black man was blocking the doors, the teenager's back on his chest. The shorter man with long hair and beard was pulling at the teenager's arm, trying to get him to move forward. The teenager fought back, tears rolling down his cheeks as he tried to escape.

"Mitch, you need to see Dr. Kirk! He'll help you!"

Mitch shook his head, crying as just gave up. He fell to his knees, sobbing loudly as he wrapped his arms around his stomach. The bearded man looked up at who Alex guessed was his husband, tears prominent in his green eyes. The black man had a stone bums expression on his face, kneeling down so he could pick up his son. This time, the teenager didn't fight back. He was still crying, refusing to look at anyone. Alex took that time to walk up to the family, smiling weakly and feeling his heart break at the small teenager in front of him.

The beautiful and ethereal teenager.

"Are you looking for James Kirk?"

"Why, yes we are," the black man spoke, looking down at his son. His son was looking away from him, lips quivering from the anxiety coursing through his body. "I'm Kevin Olusola."

"And I'm Avi Olusola," the bearded man replied, tears still in his eyes. He sighed, looking at his son sadly. "Introduce yourself."

At that moment, Alex realized just how beautiful brown could be. The eyes he made contact with weren't just brown eyes.

They were stars.

The kind you see when you go camping and there are no city lights taking away from the beauty. They're falling stars, ones that died yet still held the fragility and etherealness of nature and astronomy. Alex could tell that the eyes were once full of childlike happiness and love, but now they were empty and void of what was once happiness for the small boy.

Alex still thought he was beautiful.

The boy opened his mouth to answer but closed it right away. He looked at his dads, shaking his head as tears gathered in his eyes once more. Avi sighed, looking at Alex with teary eyes.

"This is Mitchell, Mitch for short. He is Dr. Kirk's client."

Alex nodded, looking at Mitch carefully now. He had scars all over his face, clavicles, arms, and chest. Some looked like normal cuts, but others looked like they were made because they were cut open. None of them seemed self-inflicted though, which made Alex happy.

"Anyway, we need to go now," Avi murmured, patting Mitch's back gently. "I'll be back in an hour, Mitch. I love you."

Mitch nodded and as soon as Kevin went to hug him, he flinched. He put his right shoulder up, putting his hands together like he was praying. He looked like he was protecting himself from his father, not wanting to go through the same pain that made him scared of...men? Kevin teared up a bit, looking back at Avi with a hurt expression. The couple walked out, not without looking back at Mitch protectively. Alex looked at Mitch, offering his hand and frowning when Mitch flinched for a second time.

"There's no need to be scared of me. My name is Alex. I will never hurt you."

Alex led Mitch to the elevator, biting back a sigh when the small blond squeezed inside a corner. His big brown eyes were full of tears, scared of the male in front of him.

"Why are you scared of me? I won't hurt you."

Mitch stayed quiet, refusing to speak. Alex sighed, happy when they reached James' floor. Mitch stayed on the elevator, unable to move. Alex offered his hand once more, raising an eyebrow impatiently.

"Come on. My father's waiting."

Mitch obeyed, taking Alex's hand hesitantly.  Both males looked at their held hands, staying quiet until Alex cleared his throat.

"We should really be going. It's time to see my father."

Mitch nodded, letting the tall male walk him. Why did he have to be tall and kind of look like...

Him?

~~~
"Come on, Pops! Please!"
"I don't know, Mitch," Avi murmured, looking over at Kevin. Kevin looked up from his book, shrugging his shoulders. "I don't feel comfortable with those two."
"It's just Scott and Kirstie," Mitch promised, causing both dads to shake their heads. "What's wrong with them?"
"You still have a black eye from Scott," Kevin spoke up, causing Mitch to blush and cover his eye. "Although your make is 'on point' like you kids say these days, my beautiful son has an ugly bruise on him from an ugly person."
"Scott isn't ugly! He's the most handsome person I know!"
"Outer beauty has nothing to do with inner beauty, Mitch. You are a beautiful person in and out. Scott and Kirstie are beautiful people, but only on the outside. You don't need those two."
"Please?" Mitch asked politely, his dads sharing another look. Who could say no to a voice like that? "I did all my chores, I went to work, I help pay some of the bills, I buy groceries, I do a lot. Just, please, let me go out with my friends? I'll call you if anything goes wrong. You two are my emergency contacts."
Avi shrugged his shoulders, looking over at Kevin. Kevin signed, nodding his head to confirm their answer. Mitch smiled, practically jumping up and down.
"Ye-"
"THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!"
Mitch hugged his parents, kissing their temples sweetly. They smiled, hugging Mitch's tiny body before looking at him seriously.
"Just...stay clean, okay?" Kevin asked, a sad look in his eyes. Mitch nodded, becoming sad himself. "You've been clean for a year now."
Mitch sighed, nodding his head as he looked at the ground. Scott and Kirstie pressured him to do a lot of stuff and after bugging him endlessly, he finally did it. Said activity almost killed him and he stayed in rehab for over eleven months. Now he's back and Scott and Kirstie want to celebrate with him.
Whatever celebrating meant to them.
"I know. I won't do that ever again. I'm ashamed of myself. If they try to pressure me to do it again, I'll call you and I'll go to Scott's house. Connie and Richard are some of the nicest people I know."
The kindest people with the cruelest son.
"Okay, I trust you," Avi spoke up, handing Mitch a rubber band. Mitch took it, a look of confusion on his face. "You put it on your wrist and snap it if you feel pressured to do it. Please tell me, Mitch. If you end up breaking your sobriety, it's okay. That's going to happen. Just tell me and Dad, okay?"
"Okay," Mitch promised, a big smile on his face. He hugged his parent once more, hearing the car horn beep for him. "That's Scott! I'll see you two in the morning!"
"Bye, Mitch."
"Stay safe!"
"No promises!"
That was a running joke between that family so they thought nothing about it. Mitch will stay safe. He always stays safe
Little did they know that at 2:30 A.M, their lives will change forever.
And no for the better.
