ON WITH THE STORY
Mitch couldn't believe anything the doctor said.
"Kidney failure...dialysis...hope for a surgery...rest of his life..."
Mitch has never seen Avi cry so hard before. The teenager had an empty look on his face while Avi was sobbing quietly, holding Mitch's hand with all his might while wondering what Mitch ever did to deserve this.
"It's because of the heroin overdose. I understand that Mitch had a heroin addition with a mix of cocaine and majijuana, two out three of those lead to kidney failure."
Mitch shook his head, feeling like was.about to get sick. Avi picked up a small trashcan right away, putting it near Mitch's mouth when he heard the first gag. Mitch dry heaved, coughing as Avi rubbed his hand up and down Mitch's back. The doctor sighed as he looked at his watch, looking back at the father and son.
"We would like to put the catheter in Mitch's abdomen and start dialysis today so there will be no complications in the near future. Mitch, we need to put under anesthesia."
Mitch widened his eyes and shook his head, widening his eyes when he looked at the shot in the nurses hand. All he could see was...
"GET AWAY FROM ME, KIRSTIE! GET AWAY!"
Avi watched with tear full eyes as more nurses ran in, wondering was going on only to see a nurse struggling to insert a shot into a teenaged boy's arm. The doctor laid on top of Mitch's legs, looking at Avi with empathetic eyes.
"You have to hold him down, Avriel. I'm sorry."
Throughout Mitch's life, there was never a moment when Avi nor Kevin had to hold down Mitch down when he got a shot. Sure, they had to scold him a few times when he wasn't cooperating, but he was usually very good at behaving when it came to shots.
But now here he is, having to hold down his son so he could have a life-saving medicine coursing through his body.
It broke his heart.
"I'm so sorry, Mitch. I'm so sorry," Avi whispered, holding down Mitch's chest. Mitch looked up at him, tears streaming done his face as he screamed. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry."
The nurse managed to put the shot into Mitch's arm, sighing in relief only to get glares sent at her. She put her hands up in defense, widening her eyes a bit.
"I'm sorry, but when you have to deal with someone kicking and screaming, you'd be relived once they cooperate."
"Yeah, but imagine if you had a child and they've been so much for not even this past year of their short life that made them scared of sharp objects. You would be in tears too so why would my son be any different?" Avi hissed, watching Mitch struggling to keep his eyes open. They were closing from the anesthesia. "Shh, it's okay. You'll wake up and get better. Let go, Mitch. I'll be there when you wake up."
Mitch nodded, closing his eyes as a kind nurse put an oxygen mask on Mitch. A gurney came in and all the nurses excluding the mean one hoisted Mitch up and wheeled him over to the surgical room, leaving Avi behind. The doctor frowned softly, looking at Avi pitifully.
"He will be in the dialysis room. He will have a future surgery for a more permanent option. I will make a small incision in his arm and put a graft I there. In the mean time, he will just the catheter in his stomach. As of right now though, I will like to stick to the catheter."
Avi nodded as he thought of a more serious question, closing his eyes before asking.
"Will he survive this?"
Silence.
Then...
"I don't know, Avi. I just don't know."
~~~
Alex left Scott's house not too long ago and walked into the hospital, remembering what today was.
Today is the ten year anniversary of his mother dying.
Every year, he would go to the hospital and say hello to the nurses that worked with his mom before her death from an accidental overdose on the medicine her doctor prescribed to her. It was hard to.come here every yards considering that she died here in the hospital and everyone that worked with her was by her side when she died.
It broke Alex's heart to know how much people were heartbroken over his mom's death.
As he was walking, he heard a gaps behind him. He tried to ignore it, but a voice called out for him.
"Alex?!"
Alex widened his eyes turning around to see...
"Mario! What are you doing here?"
Alex was expecting to see Mario's big smile, but all he got was a frown, tear tracks, and red eyes from crying so much. Mario wiped his eyws, sighing heavily before continuing.
"My best friend since I was five is having surgery for a catheter. He has kidney failure."
Alex dropped his jaw open, wanting nothing more than to hug Mario as hard as he could. Seeing Mario look so sad breaks his heart. He hasn't seen him this sad since his best friend left for rehab a year or so ago.
"Is this your same friend that went to rehab?"
"Yeah, actually. He's been through so much," Mario got out, wiping his eyes before looking at the red bracelet. Alex raised an eyebrow, wondering where he's seen one like that. "He had a drug addiction. A couple of people made him do it. He just did it to avoid humiliation, but it eventually became more of an unhealthy addiction. He had to go to rehab for a year because his parents found him trying to commit suicide in the kitchen and when he was asked why he was trying to do it, he said it was because of the voices telling him to do so. He came back a year later and not even two weeks later, he was stabbed by his friends."
Alex widened his eyes, knowing that story from anywhere. But it couldn't be him. Mitch didn't go to rehab. Scott and Kirstie did.
"Oh, wow," Alex murmured, shaking his head as he thought about this new information. "I'm sorry about your friend. I hope he's okay."
"I hope so too, but I don't think he's been okay for the longest time. I just want to hug him whenever I see him. Seeing him sad is so heartbreaking," Mario whimpered, shaking his head as he wiped at more tears. "I'm sorry for crying so much. It's just...seeing someone that went through much go through more just breaks my heart."
Alex nodded and was about to say something else when Mario heard his name called, waving goodbye to Alex. Alex waved back and sighed, shaking his head as he tried to look for one of the nurses. As he did...
"Alex?!"
Alex turned around once more, Angelica Maldonado behind him. He smiled widely, hugging Kirstie's mom as tightly as he could.
"Hi, Angelica! How are you?"
"I'm good! I'm just getting ready to go up to Avi Olu-I'm Avi Kaplan. He's getting a divorce. Anyway, his son Mitch was diagnosed with kidney failure today. I want nothing more than to hug that poor boy."
"Wait...Mitch was diagnosed with kidney failure?!" Alex asked, widening his eyes. Angelica nodded, her eyes full of sorrow. "Why?!"
"I'm afraid I can't give that away. You know him though so I'm sure you can ask him."
Alex nodded and tried to control his breathing.
"Um, I got to go now. Bye."
Before Angelica could say anything, Alex ran outside and went to his car. He drove off to Scott's house and when he pulled up, he tried his best to control him emotions.
Did Scott...lie?
As he walked up to the door, he realized that it was open for the whole world to see what was going on in Scott house. Alex raised an eyebrow at Scott, wondering what was going on.
"Scott, what's going on? Is everything okay?"
"Um, yeah. It's just my dad found the knife used from Mitch being stabbed," Scott chocked out, shaking his head before speaking once more. "His D.N.A was on the handle."
Alex was confused, not knowing what Scott meant.
"What does that mean?"
Scott took a deep breath and wiped his eyes before continuing.
"It means that he is framing someone. He did this to himself and everyone who is supporting him is in on it."
~~~
Mitch woke up to someone singing, smiling when he realized that it was Mario. Mario was singing Hallajuia, his beautiful voice bringing tears to Mitch's eyes as he continued listening to his best friend. Mario must have felt Mitch wake up because he smiled at his best friend, kissing Mitch's temple sweetly.
"You slept for an hour or so. I decided to get some sleep myslef, but only lasted for thirty minutes. Are you sire you don't want to sleep longer?"
"Yeah. I'm fine. Let's do something fun. I'm bored."
"Okay," Mario commented, tapping his fingers on his pant leg. He looked over at the piano, smiling once more. "Do you want to sing?!"
Mitch's smile dropped, realizing that he didn't tell Mario.
He forgot to.
"Mario...I forgot to you tell you this."
Mario nodded, becoming scared at the tone of disappointment in Mitch's voice. Mitch took a deep breath and pulled on his turtleneck, showing the one-inch scar around his neck, getting a gasp in response. Mitch closed his eyes, pulling the turtleneck back up before speaking.
"I-I can't sing anymore, Mario. I lost only talent. I'm ugly, I'm broken, I'm stupid, I'm-"
Mitch sobbed in the middle of his sentence, taking a deep breath before speaking again.
"I'm untalented. I'm nothing, Mario. I'm broken."
Mario shook his head, wiping Mitch's tears away. He was heartbroken, wanting nothing more than for his friend to be happy. Mario heard Mitch's hands, looking at his best friend seriously.
"Mitch, you are not broken. You are just under construction."
"Wha-what does that mean?"
"It means that you're being rebuilt again. Part of you is falling apart, but you have an amazing support system that will be there to rebuild you. It might take days, months, years even, but you will be rebuilt one day. You will not be the same after you are done being rebuilt, but the point of reconstruction is to make one stronger and we're doing that for you, Mitch. You will be stronger. I will do anything to make sure that you will be stronger. You will rise."
Mitch sniffed, nodding as more tears rolled down his cheeks. He hugged Mario as hard as he could, sobbing quietly as Mario's warmth comforted him. Mario shushed him, rocking him back and forth as Avi walked inside. Avi watched the scene, smiling softly before walking upstairs. As he did, he could have sworn he heard a woman in his room. He widened his eyes and opened the door, gasping at the sight. Kevin was making out...
With a female.
"Kevin, what the heck?!"
Kevin and the female separated, both in absolute shock. The female couldn't speak, standing up immediately and leaving the room without a word. Kevin just sat there while Avi glared at him, waiting for an answer.
"I guess...I'm just lonely and stressed out."
"So you cheat on me?!" Avi roared, glaring at his husband. He scoffed, before shaking his head. "Do you know what? I do not want a divorce. If you leave her for me and your son though...you stay out of our lives."
With that said, Avi walked downstairs and put a fake smile on his face. A movie was on and Mario and Mitch's were taking, laughter coming from one of both of them every few seconds. Avi smiled saldyx his heart aching as he thought about what he said to Kevin.
He wanted a divorce, but he would rather Kevin cheat on him every night than to have a divorce and make Mitch wonder if he was the reason why his parents separated.
A/N: Three updates in two days! I'm really happy. Also, I think this story will be longer than expected and I'm excited.:) Anyways, I hope that you all enjoyed this chapter and remember that I love you all.:)
