"As We Know It"

S2:E17

Emotions in that O.R were high and full of anxiety and tension, Jess was in a room with a bomb but her unborn baby and best friend were too.

Burke had sent all non-essential personnel out of the room, leaving Meredith, Jessica, Hannah, himself and the bomb squad team.

Meredith and Jessica were refusing to leave, yes it was stupid and yes it was dangerous, but they weren't leaving Hannah who was still a child and a patient alone.

Meredith left with Burke to discuss with Dylan whilst Hannah, the anesthesiologist and Jessica stayed in awkward and tense silence.

The anesthesiologist stood up and handed the bag to Jess, "I have a wife and kids." he stuttered as he left, Hannah and Jess freaking out.

"Hey Hannah, look at me, we've got this. You stay still and I'll keep this patient breathing. I've got you." Jess comforts the young paramedic who had tears in her eyes.

Hannah was still freaking out and flinching involuntarily, the door opening. "He left, the stupid coward left us." Jess snapped as Meredith helped the two.

Anxiety was felt by every occupant of that room, fear and apprehension absorbed into everyone's mind.

"I knew I shouldn't have got up today, I had a stupid feeling that I was going to die. I felt like my insides were strangling each other." Meredith stared as the two seeked comfort in each other.

Hannah was becoming more of a flight risk as Meredith and Jess tried to talk her down. "I know that you're scared to hell right now. That's understandable, but by staying here with us, you're saving this mans life. You are being a hero by standing there right now." Jess comforted her.

Meredith nodded as she rested her hand on Hannah's arm but she sobbed. "No! I have to go." she screamed as she left, everyone ducked, leaving Jess with her hand inside a patient and Meredith squeezing the bag whilst looking incredulously at her friend.

"What?! It was either I step in or we never step out of this room. I think what you mean is thanks for buying us more time. I was the closest." Jess snapped as she felt so stupid at her actions.

Meredith looked furious with her friend." Are you stupid?! You're pregnant! Not only did you put your life in danger you put your innocent, unborn child in the way of harm." Burke stared at Jess as did Dylan. "Let us switch. Let me put my hand there. I'm not pregnant and I don't have a family who love me. My mom doesn't recognise me. Let me do this."

Jess shook her head at her friend as Dylan groaned."Nobody else is putting their hands in the patients abdominal cavity to hold the freaking bomb!" Meredith stared.

"Mer, I'm scared. I'm so sorry. Tell Alex I am so sorry. It's his baby, and I might've just killed us both." Meredith held her friends eye contact and sighed.

Alex then stormed in the room. "I hoped that you wouldn't have been this stupid. But it's you, so of course you were. You need to stop putting yourself in harms way." He sighed as Jessica tried to form the words.

"I'm pregnant Alex and it's yours. I wasn't thinking. All my brain was saying was the patient needs me and I forgot that everything else was there. He was all that mattered."

The Karev man put his head in his hands and sighed, loudly groaning. His eyes darkened as he stared from his best friend to his friend to his boss. "You need to get her out of here now." He growled at Meredith.

"Alex go, I'll be fine." Jess whispered as Alex's anger rose and he walked forwards. "Alexander Michael Karev move now." Jessica shouted, her head spinning.

Alex was being forced backwards by one of the bomb squad guys and resulted in punching him in the nose, a significant crack sounding round the room.

The Karev man stormed out as the bomb squad man cupped his nose, a nurse taking him outside. "I am so sorry about him." Meredith explained as she stared at her pale and shaking friend.

"I am so stupid, why do I always put myself in danger." A tear slid down her pale cheek as Meredith locked eyes with her.

Cristina stormed inside the O.R, staring at her two friends. "I cannot believe how stupid you both are." She snapped as Meredith glared at the Korean woman.

"I'm not the one with a bomb in my hand!" Meredith defended as she noticed Jessica paling and her eyes blinking rapidly. "Jess, hey, breathe." Her breathing was becoming more rapid as she tried everything to keep her body still.

Jess lurched as she gagged, Cristina grabbing the closest thing being a metal bowl as she undid her mask and rubbed her back. "She's pregnant." Meredith explained as her friend vomited and tried to stay as still as possible.

Cristina looked exasperated as she wiped her friends mouth and pulled her mask back up. "Okay, now you are twice as stupid. Not only have you endangered yourself, but now a baby. Wait, please tell me that you are not carrying Evil Spawn's kid." She deadpanned as Jess smiled sheepishly.

Burke was becoming increasingly adgitated as Cristina stayed inside the O.R. "Cristina, go, we've got it. You can rip me a new one, when we are outside this room." She nodded and left begrudgingly as Burke sighed and exhaled.

The brunette was zoning in and out of focus as her anxiety amplified the noises around her, but she couldn't hear the words.

Dylan re-entered the O.R looking somehow even more stressed than he had been and whispered to Burke incessantly as Meredith snapped at them. "We are not patients, so what is going on." She demanded, looking from her friend who was clearly freaking out to her boss.

Jessica focused back in on reality to hear Meredith freaking out. "So if this bomb explodes, it could take the entire hospital with it?" She stated as her eyes widened.

Dylan and his team started getting people ready to move away from the O.R and further away from the main oxygen tank line.

Fifteen minutes later and they were slowly moving through the corridors, Jess and Meredith catching eyes with Cristina, her breath caught in her throat.

"The device is shaped like a rocket, 8 inches long. I'll ask you to take your hand and wrap it around the device and pull it out level." Dylan repeated the plan to Jess as Meredith smiled encouragingly at her friend.

Cristina, Dylan and Meredith were arguing over something as Jess tried to focus on breathing, the gurney jolting on a piece of metal and juddering to a stop.

Tears were now leaking down Jess' cheeks. "I'm going to die because I was stupid." She muttered as Meredith tried to comfort her. "I'm going to leave my three month old baby alone, her dad doesn't even know she exists."

"Ready when you are." Preston Burke stated to Dylans' Bomb Squad team as everyone took their places in the new operating room.  "When I widen the wound the bleeding will intensify and to save him you need to remove the ammo immediately, keeping it level." Jess nodded, taking a deep steadying breath. "Go." He stated as Jess took a deep breath.

Her hand tightened slightly around the ammo and pulled it out slowly, keeping it level and steady as best as she could. Tears were streaming down her face now, as the nose slowly surfaced.

Eventually, the bomb is fully out and Jess hands it to Dylan, his hands stretched out waiting, they curled around the ammo slowly as he took small steps out of the operating room.

"You two can leave." Burke stated as Meredith wrapped her arms around her friend, Jess was crying.

They walked slowly as Jess tried to keep her breathing steady and normalize her heart rate, the stress wasn't good for the baby.

Meredith and Jess watch Dylan hand the bomb to another member of the bomb squad but are thrown back in the explosion.

Jess' head slammed against the wall as she slumped to the ground unconscious. Meredith was dazed and confused but awake as she saw her friend bleeding from her head, face down on the floor.

Debris coats Jess as Meredith tries to wake her up. "Jess, wake up. Come on, show me those baby blues." She shook her shoulder slightly, holding her palm over a bleeding wound on her forearm.

Jess' eyes open slightly as Meredith helps her up, wrapping her arms around her. Cristina and Izzie rushing up to the two, leading them to the shower. Cristina and Izzie help wash Meredith as Jess leans against the wall, her head in her hands.

Blood is still flowing from her head laceration as George and Alex peer through the door, Alex walking in and up to his best friend.

No hesitation as he pressed a soft, careful kiss to her forehead, helping her to stand up and turning the shower on, wiping away the debris and some of the blood.

His hands were careful as the wrapped around her waist and leant her weight on his abdomen and legs, getting soaked himself but he didn't care.

When the majority of the blood and debris was washed away, he shut the shower off and carried her out of the bathroom, to an empty side room to suture her head lacerations and do a quick examination.

Derek stormed into the room as he took over from Alex with the neuro exam, the intern focusing on the large laceration on her upper forearm. "You almost died today." He muttered as he held her head into his chest for a moment as she broke into tears.

His arms wrapped around her as he kissed the top of her head. "I'm pregant." She whispered as his eyes landed on Alex and his eyes darkened.
