Misson: Artic Encounters
~Edited~
3/3/17. JFC. Reading through this and editing almost killed me. That being said, there are quite a few changes to the end, so you're more than welcome to re-read if you'd like. Turns out there's an extra 400-600 words since I edited. Interesting. :3
- Robin's P.O.V -
I ran to the mission briefing room with M'gann flying close behind.
I stopped when I noticed my brothers were there.
"What are you guys doing here?" I asked, tilting my head slightly.
"We're here to help Baby Bird," Red Hood laughed, ruffling my hair roughly, causing me to lose my balance slightly.
"Stop it Hood!" I shouted, slapping his hand away angrily. I gave him my best batglare. Why did he always have to treat me like a little kid? He just laughed at me, while KF paled a little, knowing I'm close to perfecting it. The others didn't see it. I shoved past him, and stood next to Nightwing who gave me a slight nod which I returned.
"Are you done?" Batman asked drily, glaring slightly.
"Yes," I huffed. Hood came over and used my head as an armrest. I growled, and pushed him off, only to have his arm back on my head a couple of seconds later. I groaned but didn't make a move to move him off. There was no point.
"Moving on," Batman started, sending a pointed look to Red Hood. "The league is busy with off world business. So we're giving you this mission. It's extremely important and it must be completed without fail. An anonymous tip sent the League information about some dangerous cargo being shipped. The cargo is extremely important and could greatly help create a super weapon strong enough to take out half the world if actived," Batman explained sternly. I sucked in a breath.
"That strong? What the heck's in there? And since when do you trust anonymous tips?" I asked, rushing to get my questions out before he could stop me.
Batman glared lightly at me, not even using his famous batglare, before continuing.
"Yes, the cargo should be that strong. Even if it is an anonymous tip, we can't allow this to slip by. If that cargo is allowed to be transported we could be facing a deadly threat that even the league will struggle against. As for the cargo itself... It seems to be a huge amount of Kryptonite, and Vibraium." Batman continued.
"Wha..." KF stuttered.
This is going to be so fun. Our first real important mission.
Batman explained the plan to us.
M'gann and Superboy were to locate the helicopter, since it'll most likely be cloated in one way or another. Either that, or they'll be able to locate it better through the weather due to their powers. Once it was located, Aqualad was to strike the copter with his electricity, for three seconds and no longer. I would be away at a distance and once I spot the lightening I send a signal to KF and Artemis, who will speed towards the right and help bring the copter down in order to stop the shipment. The main conclusion; we have to stop this shipment no matter what.
We had two hours until departure, so we had time to get ready. I was already ready as usual - as Batman had trained me - so I decided to double check everything and ensure I brought whatever extra items I may need.
---*Time Skip*---
I crouched into my spot, hiding behind a snow covered boulder. Don't you just love blizzards?
Nothing like waiting in cold blizzards doing nothing at all, while waiting for a signal to come, that may take hours. That's how everyone wants to spend their day. I sighed and put the binoculars to my eyes again and continued waiting for the signal.
I waited for what seemed like days, but in reality was only a couple of hours. At that point, I was practically frozen. I was fairly sure there was some icicles forming on my body...
There was a crunching on the shw behind me and despite how utterly frozen and cold I was, I stood up. I glared through the snow, trying to make out the figure before me.
"Who are you?" I demanded.
"I do not believe that is your concern as of yet." The man replied. I narrowed my eyes at him. He was wearing what looked to be heavy armour and a black and orange mask, showing only one eye.
"Whoever you are, you new to leave. This is a closed operation," I stated, my eyes narrowinh at the figure. I shivered, my body trembling. I had been out in the snow for so long already, I wouldn't be surprised if all my reactions and instincts had been slowed dramatically.
"I will, shortly. After I see my shipment through," He said, looking up the sky. For a brief second, I almost nodded and turned around when the realization sunk in. My eyes widened before narrowing again.
"Your shipment?" I asked, my voice low, dangerous.
"If I'm being honest, then it is not all my shipment. I merely have a small part in it."
I growled and pulled out my Escrima sticks. (I hope that's what their called.) [EDIT: Lol, I still don't know. Thanks for the comments though. XD)
"Who are you?" I demanded. Who was this person and what part did he play in all of this?
"I believe you will find out in due time," He said, before pulling out a bo-staff. I growled and charged at him. I swung my weapons at him, not wasting a single second. He blocked every single one of my attacks easily, each with a simple movements. The blood rushed in my ears as my body began to warm up slightly and I was able to move faster.
I growled and put as much force as I could into my next swing, hoping to break through his defence but to no avail. The masked man brought his staff up and hammered it into my hand in a quick movement, making me drop my stick, a hiss of pain escaping me.
He swung his staff towards my chin, and I immediately flipped away, narrowly avoiding getting hit. I looked around for my stick, but saw nothing. The man charged at me, swinging his staff at me wildly, but yet each swing was thought through. I put my escrima stick back onto my belt, in case I might need it later, and took out my bo-staff. I leaped towards him, my staff clashing with his with an equal force. There was a sharp sound as the staffs collided.
"Who... Are you?" I growled, as he began to push me down, my knee now pushing against the soft snow.
"Patience, child." He stated. I pushed back against him, using the force to take a couple steps away from him.
"I'm not a patient person. What do you want?" I growled.
"I'm afraid you'll have to be."
He surged towards me, putting his staff away, and aiming a punch right at me. I immediately moved to protect myself with my staff. My eyes widened as his fist changed direction as the last second, swerving around my staff and punching me in the jaw. I was sent flying, but as I flew back, I noticed something.
Lightening crackling in the sky. Aqualad's signal. My back lands softly in the cold snow. I pulled myself up and reach for my communicator, when a hand wraps around my throat and slams me into the rocky wall of the mountain. The stones are edged and stab me in the back. I gasp as the air is knocked out of me and part of the wall chips away.
"Calling for Backup so soon?" The man chuckles.
"Ha... You wish..." I breath. I bring my foot up, and kick the unsuspecting man in the stomach, knocking him back. My neck is immediately released, and I reach for my communicator.
I activate the communication and I'm about to warn KF, when it's kicked not-so-nicely out of my hand. I bring my hand back in pain and cradle it on my chest. He's strong...
I take a couple of steps back, searching for my communicator, when I notice it a couple of feet away. I run towards it, only to have my feet kicked out from under me. My reflexes kick in and I save myself from falling with a hand spring. I turn in mid-air and sprint towards my only way to signal KF. Realizing I'm not going to get away, my mind desperately attempts to think of a plan. My eyes dart back and forth, scanning the surroundings for something I can use to my advantage - something, anything, that I can use.
I notice the various boulders scattered across the small clearing and a grin spreads across my face. I switch directions slightly and run at the boulders and once I'm close to the said boulders, I flip up, landing on the slippery surface.
I recognise that I have the advantage as I jump from rock to rock. I position my hand on a rock before twisting my body around to kick him as hard as I can in the face. It works and he takes a couple of steps back from the recoil. I jump down and sprint off. I'm just about to grab my communicator when my hand is grabbed and twisted painfully behind my back. I let out a yelp as I'm forced to my knees.
I don't struggle too much, because I know this position. If I move too much, he could easily break my arm with the simplest of movements.
"What do you want?" I demand.
"I merely cannot allow you to contact your friends," The man explains. My free hand reaches towards the communicator, only to have my arm twisted more painfully. I gasp, and drop my head, my arm going to my shoulder. I can still feel my back bleeding painfully from when I was stabbed lightly from the rocks.
"I wouldn't move if I were you."
I look up to my communicator.
We cannot allow this shipment through at any costs.
If the shipment is allowed through.... We'll be looking at a superweapon powerful enough to devastate the planet in the wrong hands.
I blink. I look back up to the sky, where I once saw the signal. Everyone is counting on me to this... I can't fail here otherwise everything we've worked so hard for will be lost.
With that thought, I jump up, and surge forward, breaking my right arm in the process and dive for my communicator. I also kick the man in the knee, giving me a boost. My left, unbroken arm picks up the communicator, and I immediately activate it. "KF! Go. GO. GO!" I scream into it.
"Right!" KF shouts back. I smile, and turn onto my back, letting the snow sooth the pain, giving my partly bare back a numb feeling. I let out a shaky breath, and let out my signature cackle.
"Mission complete," I mutter. The man towers over me. Fear pangs at my heart, but I focus mainly on the pain in my broken arm. I couldn't believe I just broke my arm of my own free will. But then again... The world's more important then my arm. I close my eyes and wait for the pain. But nothing comes.
I open my eyes again and stare at the shadow towering over me. Silence passes between us, excluding the howling wind of the blizzard.
"You're not doing anything." I state obviously.
"You've surprised me, Robin. I had high expectations for you and you surpassed even those. I was testing you here today. You exceeded the test far beyond any of my expectations," He explains.
"Test? Expectation? What the hell are you going on about?" I ask.
"Patience Robin. You'll find out soon enough."
"I told you... I'm not a patience person!" I shout, pushing myself up and aim a punch at his chest. He dodges at the last second, with speed that has to rivals the Flash's.
My eyes widen as he grabs my wrist, pushing it behind my back once again and kicks my feet from under me. As I fall to the ground, there's there's sound of something being sheaved before something slashes at my back, deeply cutting into my skin and temporarily paralyzes me. My head smashes against a rock, making me light-headed as blood rushes down my face. I land on my back, having rebounded off the rock. I stare up at the cloudy blizzard sky.
"That was rather sloppy, Robin. I could have easily just killed you just now. But I suppose I shouldn't have expected too much when you're in that condition. After all, I don't believe you're trained to be in such harsh conditions for so long. So easily killable."
"So why didn't you kill me?" I ask.
He chuckles.
"Until next time, Robin," With that he walks away.
I don't even bother to move. The pain in my arm, back and head make itself clearly known. I can tell I'll be paralyzed for a little while. It's not permanent. I can tell. He was careful when he slashed me. I'll only be paralyzed for a couple of minutes, giving him more than enough time to escape. I don't even have a clue to who he is. Perfect.
I can feel myself getting weaker from the blood loss. The snow around me was absorbing my blood, and slowly spreading to the rest of the snow. My hair was matted to my head, sticking there because of all the blood. I can hear my friends calling me from my communicator. I think can move now, but I just don't want to. The world was becoming darker...
My head was spinning and I was light-headed, pain was flowing immensely in certain areas and the snow was numbing every part of my body. At least it soothes some of my pain... I couldn't bring myself to move at all.
The voices were now growing worried with each passing minute. My head dropped to the side slightly, my hair falling over mt eyes, creating a shadow over my face.
It was probably only five minutes later when the Bio-Ship landed nearby. I could hear their cries for me, their pleads to let them know where I was. Yet, I still couldn't bring myself to call to them. I couldn't bring myself up do anything.
Why were they so worried anyways? They had the harder job. They were the ones who had to stop the shipment. I was just the messenger.
"Robin! Where are you? Please answer us!" M'gann called.
"My friend! Please! Answer us!" Kaldurr shouted.
"Superboy, can't you use your super hearing to find him?" Artemis asked.
"I can try," Superboy replied.
"Kid Flash, can you go see if you can find him?" M'gann asked.
"Right," KF replied. I could hear him speeding off in the opposite direction, and coming back.
"Nothing that way. I'll check the other way," Kid Flash's voice stated mere moment after. I could hear him rushing towards me.
"Robin!" He shouted, just as he came into my vision and knelt down beside me. "Dude, what happened? Guys! He's over here! He's heavily injured!" KF shouted. I winced. I didn't want them to see me like this...
The team rushed over to me.
"Robin! What happened to you?" M'gann cried, tears welling up in her eyes
I smiled. "What's with those faces?" I laughed.
"My friend... What has occurred here to put you in such a bad state?" Kaldurr asked, worry written over his face.
"C'mon guys. Your so not feeling the aster here!" I laughed. They looked at me shocked.
"We need to get him back to the ship, now." Artemis ordered. Everyone nodded. Super boy walked up to me, and carefully put his hands under my back. I winced and hissed in pain as my cut burned in protest.
"Rob... What happened to your back?" KF Asked slowly, getting ready to turn me over. I refused to look at any of them. My hair fell back into my face, blocking my eyes from sight. Just as KF put his hand in my shoulder to turn me over, I whispered to him. "Don't look... Please, you don't need to see..."
He stopped for a second, hesitating, before continuing to turn me onto my stomach. The second my belly touched the snow, M'gann screamed and fell into the snow, Artemis dropped her bow and stared at me in horror. Even Supes looked slightly horrified. KF's face was also full of horror. It was that bad, huh? KF's horrified face turned into a look of sheer hatred and rage.
"Who. Did. This?" He asked, his voice full of rage.
"Who knows? He wouldn't tell me who he was... I don't know anything about him..." I smile sadly, my eyes beginning to close, only to be jolted by the angry Kid Flash.
"You've got to know something and every little helps!" Kid shouts, leaning closer to me.
"Hey..." I whispered. "Can we... Go back now?"
KF blinked, and there was a flash in his eyes as if he only just remembered what was happening. Kid nodded and Superboy made his way towards me.
"Don't worry, Supes... I got this." I said, pushing myself up, my arms buckling under me and my broken arm screaming in agony.
"Dude! What- What are you doing?" KF screeched.
"Getting up. What does it look like?" I asked in a duh tone. I slowly rose to my legs, my body swaying back and forth. Super boy walked towards me.
"I might need a little help to get back though..." I smirked.
I put my arm around Superboys neck and he helped me limp towards the Bio-ship at a slow pace.

---*One Martian Flying Express Trip Later*---
I slowly made my way to the hole that is a martian door, with the help of Superboy. I could faintly hear voices from outside.
"Where's Robin? You said he was injured," I heard Batman demand.
"He's coming. But I need you all to promise to stay calm." KF pleads.
"I'm more than capable of remaining calm," Batman states.
"Yeah, but can you stay the same for the other three Bat-related members you got there?" KF questions.
"What. Happened?" I heard Red Hood growl. I take a deep breath, and step into the light with the help of Superboy. I look down at my brothers shocked faces, and I smirk.
"What's with those idiotic faces?" I ask, tilting my head up slightly, just as more blood spurts down my face, sticking my hair to my head again. I groan.
"Aww man..." I whine, dropping my head. "So not feeling the aster now..."
"Robin... What the hell happened to my little brother?" Red Hood screams at a now terrified speedster. It was only just now that I noticed that some of the Justice League were there. B.C, Superman, Green Arrow, Martian Man hunter, Wonder woman and The Flash, all of which looked horrified. I sigh, and begin the journey down the ramp towards my family.
"You guys don't look too asterous," I comment with a smirk.
"What?! Don't look too asterous? You're half dead!" Hood screams.
"I fail to say your point," I state, my voice monotonic as I stop in front of them, a blank look on my face.
Nightwing moves to touch my arm but I hiss and push myself away immediately. His eyes widen.
"Robin. You never said anything about your arm being injured." Superboy mutters, looking at me with a sceptical look on his face.
"Yeah about that... I think Its broken." Scratch that, I know it's broken.
"How did you break it?" Red X asks, anger clear in his voice. By now the league members had gathered around us.
"Well you see this guy had me in some sort-" I cut myself off as I realize what I was about to reveal. "Never mind. It was an accident." I say, dropping my head and letting my hair create a shadow over my face.
"Who?" Batman demands.
"Can we not talk about this now? I'm tired, I wanna sleep. So can we go back home?" I ask, looking back up, desperate to avoid talking about my clear failure.
Batman nods. "But we will be talking about this."
My turn to nod. I take a step towards my family and away from Superboy and Jason slips my arm around his neck. He pulls his head back to look at my back, and he sucks in a breath, his anger growing even more.
"How the hell did you get that one?" Jason asks, his voice strained. I turn my head around and remember Kaldurr took my cape when he tried to clean my cut. Seemed pretty clean to me though.
"Let's not talk about it now," I say, letting my head drop once more, and taking a step forward, walking through the crowd. I can hear the terrified gasps from behind me as I limp into the zeta beam.
Finally. I can go home. Where's its safe. And I can finally sleep... I didn't even make it through the zeta beam when the darkness took me over. The last thing I remember was my body materializing in the Batcave as my body collapses, only for my descent towards the ground to be haulted by a pair of arms.
