Flowers
Enola's POV
Three days had past and I had gone to the lodging Everleigh was staying at. I walked up the stairs to her room and knocked on the door. I waited for an answer but received none, I knocked on the door again and waited once more but still got no answer. I opened the door and walked in, closing the door behind me. There was no sign of her, all her research things were gone. I saw a letter on the bed and grabbed it.
Dear Enola
I am sorry I am not there to help save Tewksbury, I was forced into a marriage with Lord Demetri of the Baneswell estate. I don't know what will happen, tell Tewksbury I kept his flower. I hope you find your mother and I hope you can help Tewksbury.
Everleigh
I folded the letter up and held onto it, I frowned and plopped down on the bed and reread the letter. All I could think was the poor girl, no one wants to be forced into a marriage. I stood up and closed the door behind me. I started heading to the flower store, I saw all the happy people and the children. I smirked as I saw Tewksbury working sweeping the ground and fixing up the flowers.
"I want four yellow flowers, two blue and a red one. I don't care about the breed, any flower will do." he spun around and looked shocked at first but then smiled.
"What are you doing here?" He asked
"Why if you are passionate about flowers would you come to London?" I questioned.
"Because I can get lost here." He answered.
"Yet I found you." I smirked, he placed his broom down and then turned back to look at me.
"And why have you done so?" We shared a look, his smile dropped and he looked disgusted.
"You're here for the money, they've offered an award." He stated the obvious.
"Have they? I didn't know, well I must tie you up and claim you!" I teased grabbing onto his coat, he looked scared and worried. I giggled and stepped back from him, smiling.
"Stars and garters, are you really so ridiculous? I've come here because, I've grown to like you more in your absence and because as it turns out, your life is still in danger." He smirked and turned to grab a flower.
"What's made you like me more?" He smugly asked.
"Really? That is your question? Not, who is trying to kill me?" He kept his smirk up ad handed me the flower. I took it, a small smile forming on my lips. We started heading off, the letter was still in my hand. I was trying to decide when to give him the letter to read.
"I found your flower pressings, they were quite beautiful. I don't give a fig about flowers of course." I stated and placed the flower in a bucket as he caught up.
"That's because you are ignorant." I scoffed and looked at him accusingly.
"Ignorant? How dare you!" I was hurt by his words and continued to listen.
"Ignorant and willfully so." He add on.
"You could change your mind about a boy." I implied to him, meaning him.
"I'm not a boy, I'm a man." He fixed his coat and took a breath.
"You're a man when I tell you you're a man." He chuckled at my words, another smirk forming.
"You do look better in breeches, I'll give you that." I hit him, with an eye roll.
"I've missed you Enola Holmes."
"I wanted to miss you, but I kept getting dragged back towards you. Now, come on. We're in serious danger, if you didn't know. Plus, I am not the only one who misses you." His eyes softened and his smirk dropped. He looked at the ground for a moment and then back at me.
"Everleigh." He whispered and then looked back up.
"Have you spoken with her?" He gently asked and I sighed with a nod.
"Yes I have, we were both coming to save you. But plans changed, you might want to read this." I handed him the letter, his eyes darted across the page and his lips slightly parted. He looked back up at me and scrunched the piece of paper up in his hand.
"We have to save her." I smiled and nodded.
"Of course! Now follow me." I ordered and we started walking back to my lodging.
"Is this how you're living?" He asked as he gazed around the room.
"Didn't you rent a room at the Ritz?" I asked as I opened the window.
"I afforded myself a shade more comfort than this." He chuckled slightly.
"Well, the woman I boarded off assured me this was a fine room." I explained.
"Mmm. The woman you boarded off lied." He said and took his coat off, his eyes fell upon my garments and quickly looked away. I grabbed them and stuffed them somewhere else embarrassed.
"I have but a single bed, so you'll have to sleep on the floor." He placed his coat down and then grabbed one of my papers.
"You keep old papers?" He asked looking up at me, I reacted quickly and tried to grabbed it off of him but failed as he turned away and sat on the edge of the bed.
"Be careful with that. I haven't finished it yet." I said and stood besides him.
"I'm in this one." He said amused, I rolled my eyes and nodded.
"So you are." I walked to the window and started taking off my earrings.
"Why do you keep all these old newspapers, Enola Holmes?" He asked and I slowly turned towards him with a sigh.
"My mother, I'm waiting for her to leave me a message. She hasn't yet." I felt upset and swallowed a lump in my throat.
"Message? what..?" Tewksbury seemed confused and saddened.
"She likes ciphers, coded messages that need to be deciphered." I smiled slightly, remembering what she taught me.
"And why would she leave you a message?" He asked quietly, in reality I didn't really know why I took a deep breath and looked away from him.
"Because she left me. And I thought she meant for me to find her, but I'm not sure she did now. So I left her a message, and I'm hopeful of a reply." I snatched the paper from his hand and placed it with the others but gathered those too.
"I keep the newspapers to check." I added on and stood up placing the papers on the trunk. He kept fiddling with the note, tears forming in his eyes.
"She wouldn't be in this mess if I stayed with her. I'm so foolish! The man she is with is awfully horrible, I've met him a couple of times and I hated him every time I did." He folded it up and placed it in his pocket. This really was getting to him, I sighed and sat down next to him.
"We'll get her back, there's no doubt about that. Now I'll make some tea." I walked out and grabbed the pot and started filling it.
"So you genuinely believe my life is in danger? but from whom?" He asked following behind me.
"Your past and your future." I said looking up at him.
"Whatever does that mean?" He looked very confused by my words.
"Your family, they didn't send a detective to find you. They couldn't, and they didn't. Instead, they sent a murderer." I explained standing in front of him.
"Why would anyone want me dead?"
"Countless reasons. Your personality, your ridiculous hair, your silly smile, or possibly your land, your estate, your title, your seat. Same reasons they wanted your father dead. Greed does funny things to people, Tewksbury." I explained to him as we walked down the stairs and to the kitchen.
"So now you're saying you think they killed my father?" He asked.
"I don't think, I know."
"No. No, none of this makes the slightest sense. My father's death was caused by a botched burglary and- - and it would have been easier to kill me before I ran away, rather than now-" the emotion in his voice was clear and I knew he was freaking out.
"I entirely agree, I think they tried too. I found the branch that almost killed you, It had been cut."
"Cut?" I quickly grabbed the boiling pot and hit Lestrade in the face and then started running with Tewksbury following close behind me. We ran up the stairs quickly, Tewksbury utterly confused.
"Who was he?" He exclaimed, we made it to my room and slammed the door shut.
"The chest!" I ordered, he moved it in front of the door and helped me hold it against the door. We were both grunting and listen to Lestrade tried and get in but I wouldn't allow it. Things happened so quickly, I knew what I had to do but it all depends on what Tewksbury does.
"See that window over there? It leads onto a roof, I need you to climb out and take off into nowhere " I ordered, this was not an option and he will be leaving.
"And leave you? I can't do this alone, not without you or Everleigh." I rolled my eyes and glared at him.
"I need to hold onto this door."
"But you need to get away too!" His voice had pleads and he seemed worried.
"If he catches you, your life will be in danger. If he catches me, it's simply a life I do not want. Now go!" I yelled and he was still being stubborn, I really wanted to hit him at the moment.
"I don't want to leave you Enola, I need your help."
"You escaped on your own, you led your family away from your steps. Now go!" He huffed, running to the window and climbed out.
