Part 1 (Short story)
Everyone loves the first day of school, right? New year, new classes, new friends. It's a day full of potential and hope, before the dreary depressions of reality show up to ruin all the fun.
I like the first day of school for a different reason, though. You see, I have a sort of power. When I look at people, I can...sense a sort of aura around them. A colored outline based on how long that person has to live. Most everyone I meet around my age had a solid green hue, which means they have plenty of time left.
A fair amount of them have a yellow-orangish tinge to their auras, which tends to mean a car crash it some other tragedy. Anything that takes place "before their time" as people say.
The real fun is when the auras venture into the red end of the spectrum though. Every now and again I'll see someone who's basically a walking stoplight. Those are the ones who get murdered or kill themselves. It's such a rush to see them and know their time is numbered.
With that in mind, I always get to class very early so I can scout my classmates fates. The first kid who walked in was basically radiating red. Too damn bad, bro. But as people kept walking in they had that same intense glow. I finally caught a glimpse of my own rose-tinted reflection in the window, but I was too stunned to move. Our professor walked in and locked the door, his aura a sickening shade of green.
"Kane...Kane!" A voice called jerking me out of my trance.
I looked up to see my best friend Ethan right next to me, surrounded by the same red hue as the others.
"Are you okay?" He asks suspiciously.
"Yeah I'm fine," I reply, wiping a bead of sweat off my brow.
"Good morning class," the professor called out from behind his desk.
"Good morning professor," the class chorused.
The professor smiled cheerfully. His ginger hair was ruffled, like he just go out of bed. He was of average height, but no matter what I kept on eyeing the dark bright green aura surrounding his figure.
"My name is Professor Finn and I will be you bio-chemistry teacher for this year. I hope to...enjoy this year with you. Now please call 'here' when I call you name," he said.
The role call took about five minutes. At the final name Professor Finn smiled and set his paper down. Ugh what am I thinking nothings wrong, I thought trying to convince myself.
I blinked quickly trying to clear the light haze from in front of my eyes, but it didn't go away. Wait one moment... That wasn't just me. I saw the students swatting hands in front of them, attempting to move the increasing smoke, to no avail.
I sniffed the air, it wasn't a fire. Then what was it? Panic began to spread through the room.
"What's happening?"
"I can't see!"
"Fire!"
"Fire?"
People were now shouting over each other as I looked around for Professor Finn.
"Students, students please calm down! Once the fog lifts I will call for help immediately, but for now please cooperate with me!" Professor Finn's voice rang through the classroom slightly managing to quiet everyone down.
As if obeying the professor the smoke began to fade away, leaving the classroom back to as it was. Not including the turn over chairs and papers on the ground. Out of the corner of my eye I saw the professor tuck something inside his desk, but when I turned around he stood there like nothing happened. I must be imagining things. Suddenly a shrill screech echoed in the small room. All attention turned to small girl on the ground, horror alit in her eyes. All eyes turned to what she was pointing at.
A female body lay on the ground, blood covering her stomach. Her eyes were stretched wide and her mouth frozen mid-yell. Professor Finn ran over and grabbed her wrist. He finally looked up grimly biting his upper lip, but something about his expression didn't seem right.
"She's dead," he whispered softly, but it carried throughout the room. Silence befell upon the room as everyone processed what he said.
I looked at the professor suspiciously, at the green hue surrounding him. Then at Ethan and the blood red hue around him. Professor stood and went to the door attempting to open it.
"Did anyone put a lock on this door as a prank?" Professor Finn asked examining the room.
Noone talked, noone made a noise. Tension crackled in the air like electricity.
"What just happened?" Ethan asked me.
I shook my head grimly, "I'm not sure. It happened so fast."
I felt sweat trickle down the edge of my face. Professor Finn was at his desk trying to get a call through, but the phone line was cut. The smoke slowly began to fill the room again, and once again the room went into panic.
People shrieked and stumbled around looking for someone else. I felt Ethan's hand brush mine and his ragged breathing in my ear. I walked towards the professor desk as best as my memory could take me. Many things blocked me, but I finally found my way.
"Professor?" I called out, but he didn't reply.
The mist began to fade and by my feet lat another body. I caught my breath and staggered backwards in shock. The body was of a boy this time. His neck was slit open and blood pooled around my feet.
I immediately dashed to my seat and slid my phone out of my backpack.
Professor Finn.
Something wasn't right about this character. His name rang familiar in my head, but where from? His aura still glowed. Like a bright flower in the midst of blood.
"What happened?" Ethan asked me.
"Stay close," I breathed out. "I think it's the professor."
Ethan looked at me quizzically, "Why would you say that?"
I didn't know how to explain the gleaming auras, so I was forced to use other details.
"He locked the door as soon as walked in, as if saying 'no escape'. Also noone else had access to this room other then him, so he could prepare. He had just enough time to put fog machines and weapons in place. Also cut the phone lines," I reasoned.
Realization dawned on Ethan, "You're right! It has to be him, but why?"
I read through the article I had pulled up on my phone.
"This is why," I said lowering my voice. The mist began to come back, but I did my best to ignore it. I could just barely make out the wording on my phone.
" 'Finbar Alcatraz. Renowned serial killer. He is known to go around to kill innocent victims, focused on the young and healthy. Invading many colleges and high schools unrecognized due to significant amounts of plastic surgery. If sighted stay as far as possible and immediately inform the police.' " I read out in hushed whispered.
By the time I was finished the mist had began to clear, inevitably bringing forth another death. Ethan looked at me wide-eyed.
"It makes sense. Finn, Finbar. We need to do something!" Despite being football captain Ethan hated speaking out in class so by "we" he meant I had to do something.
"Just stay on guard, if anyone touches you defend yourself until you know it's either me or an onlooker," Ethan nodded and I walked off toward the professor.
"Professor, is it your first year teaching here?" I asked.
"Yes, but is this really the time for questions Kane?"
"Just simply curious. What was your name again? Fir? Finbar?" I looked at him innocently.
His jaw muscles tensed and he glared at me on guard. I was right. My heart was beated against my chest continuously.
"Oh no, it was Finn," he let out a light laugh.
"Oops, sorry!" I replied and walked of.
It was a stupid and risky move. I was positive he would aim for me next. It made sense. He thinks I know who he his, which I do, so he'll attempt to get rid of me next.
I looked around hoping to see the auras change colors, but they stayed the same. Three bodies littered the ground, students avoided going near them, glancing at them skeptically and in fear.
The mist began to come again.
"Ethan!" I hissed and grabbed his arm, "It's just me. He's going to come after me next, I'm sure of that. Just stay close and I'll signal you when I feel him come close. If you could him down until I attempt you break the window we might be able to get out and call the police." I tried to sound confident, but it was hard knowing I was toying with death.
"Are you sure about this?" He asked.
I nodded then realized he couldn't see me, "posi- yeah."
"Okay..." He trailed of.
I could feel his arm tightening under my hand. Nervous energy filled my body as I waited for him to attack.
Just as I expected a hand clamped my mouth shut and cool metal touched my neck. I squeezed Ethan's arm as hard as I could and felt him turn and tackle the figure.
His blade slightly scraped my collar bone, but I ignored and felt my way towards the window. The mist began to clear and I grabbed chair throwing it at the window. Luckily it began to crack. The scratches slowly spreading.
"Help me break the windows! Get out of here as fast as possible!" I called to the people around me, but only a few helped. The window finally shattered spraying pieces of glass everywhere.
Everyone pushed through shoving and pushing to get out. Ethan was still in the classroom holding down a struggle Professor Finn.
"I already called the police, they're on their way." Ethan hissed through clenched teeth.
Professor Finn trashed under Ethan's arm. I quickly picked up his blade from the ground and set it to neck, he immediately froze and glared at me.
I did my best to keep a straight face, but my hand trembled.
The aura around Ethan began to fade away. It glinted between red and green, then finally settled on green to my relief.
"I'll be back," Professor Finn growled and the room exploded in mist. I dropped the knife in shock.
"He's gone!" Ethan yelled.
"What!" I gasped and backed into the wall.
When the mist cleared Finbar Alcatraz was nowhere to be found.
