Chapter 13

CHAPTER THIRTEEN

"I'm bloody knackered," I said after we just held the children in our arms, Drew had casually strolled into the room, with the biggest of smiles.

"Dad, be realistic, mum just had two children." He laughed.

"Right, Rose is bloody knackered but so is Harry, except in a lesser degree, but nonetheless still excruciatingly tired." I corrected myself.

"You two should go home, get some rest," she smiled, looking down at me.

"I can't just leave you here," I said, trying to hide the mortification in my voice.

"Yes, you can. I'll be fine." She replied, and although I almost refused, Drew took my hand and dragged me out of the room.

"I love you, I'll be here first thing tomorrow!" I said as I was being pulled out of the room by a fourteen-year-old.

"I'll be fine! Stop worrying!" She replied, and I finally smiled.

"Okay!" I had never entertained the thought of leaving someone behind in a situation like this, but she had insisted so I figured she just needed some sort of time on her own. Drew and I went home, but I couldn't help the anxious lump forming in my throat as I sipped my evening tea. I couldn't go out on the terrace, since it was way too cold. The babies had been born and that was enough to keep me smiling for a decade.

"That was a good start," Cassidy Wembley's voice suddenly interrupts my thoughts.

"Thank you," I reply nonchalantly, I got so lost in telling this story again, and I almost forgot I'm in a therapy session with a doctor and my brother in the room.

"Keep going," Insley says.

"Hold on," Wembley speaks, looking down at her notepad, "Why do you think you were so nervous that night, Harry?"

"'Suppose I've always been a nervous person - that night I was just extra nervous? - It half always made me feel this type of serenity when I knew Rose was safe, and safe meant near me, next to me. As her husband, I suppose I assumed it was up to me to keep her safe, and that if she were near me I could keep her safe from any harm."

"I see," she says after I finish, "keep going."

I nod, Wembley always loved putting me on the spot with these types of things, she knew it bothered me to speak especially about the good times I had with her, even the good without her. But that was Wembley's job, evaluate if I was still stable enough to function properly.

Back to when I was still twenty-seven. Jude Winston and Aubella Marié had been born on the twenty-seventh of November at 11:57 p.m. And actually having kids was such a different thing from just being called and told: 'hey man some girl said you had sex with her and now she had a kid, you're Harry Holt right?' The experience wasn't theatrical or poetic nor anything like you see it in the films or on those television shows 'what to expect when you're expecting!' or 'pregnancy for dummies'. It was partially worse, and partially way better than I had ever imagined, though my hand was pretty useless for about three hours, I didn't really complain considering Rose just gave freaking birth! Anyway, the next morning I was up and running as if it was a normal morning, except it wasn't really considering we all - we being Drew and I - felt like we were on maternity leave as well. We went to the hospital as soon as we were dressed, but got chased out saying that the maternal ward had specific visiting hours. Instead of leaving quietly and politely like we were supposed to, we snuck in. Drew embraced the idea of acting like James Bond for fifteen minutes, whereas I wasn't too happy to be crawling around a maternal ward.

"Ms Darlings," I said as soon as I was standing next to her bed, her eyes were closed and a small smile was on her face as she slept, I tried masking my voice.

"Hm," she opened her eyes, and the small smile cracked into a full grin, "Harry!" she exclaimed but Drew shushed her from under the bed. I was dressed in the stereotypical doctors outfit, with the pad in my hands, and Drew snuck into the ward.

"We're not really supposed to be here," I laughed breathily, but she kept smiling.

"We snuck in, I feel like James Bond." Drew stated, and that caused a giggle from Rose's side.

"How're you doing," I said, pulling a chair closer to her bed and taking her hand in mine.

"Fine, considering I had children less than twenty-four hours ago, who's ready for round two?" she smirked playfully and both Drew and I's eyes went wide open.

"Mum, I love you. But two siblings is enough for now." Both of us were laughing at Drew's statement.

"Heard anything about the kids?" I asked.

"They're both perfect weight, perfect health, perfect everything." She beamed as she spoke.

"Any news about the - err," I half lowered my voice, "schizophrenia."

"No, not yet but they said as soon as the children are about three months old we can start taking them to a behavioural therapist to see if they do have schizophrenia." She replied.

"Can't they do a brain scan or something, I mean it's still eating me alive." I answered.

"Well, yeah. But it wouldn't be wise to expose them to radiation at an age like that." She said, looking to me.

"I should actually know that, I agree it would be stupid, guess I'll just have to wait." I shrugged, and she lifted herself up slightly, pressing her lips to mine.

"Stop being a worry-wart." She said, giggling softly.

Suddenly the door goes open, and the actual doctor comes in. Totally mortified, she screamed: "Security!"

Cursing under my breath, I grabbed Drew's arm and practically ran out into a very large man. He abruptly grasps my hand and pulls me toward the lift.

"Are 'ye gonna leave, or ar'we gonna 'ave a problem?" he said.

"No, no problem. We're leaving." Drew rapidly pushed the button as I tried to get this big man to go away.

As soon as we're in the lift, I looked to Drew who had burst into a fit of giggles.

"Remind me never to trust you again."
