Four: Rivals

"Pointing and shooting," Mitch said the next day in the West Wing, where stood the Dual Legion training arena. "is easy. Anybody can draw back a string and let it go. The tricky part..." Mitch lifted his bow with an arrow on his string, before looking back at his recruits instead of the target. He fired, and the arrow buried itself in the center of the target as he smirked. "is aiming. But what if you're in the dark? Or something has hindered your vision? What then? You're screwed right? Wrong." He slung his bow over his shoulder. "Use your senses of hearing, smell, and touch to keep fighting. Now who wants to try hand to hand combat blindfolded?"
Immediately, Jade raised her hand. On the side of the room, sitting on a bench, Fells raised an eyebrow. Mitch pointed to her. "Magellan! Get up here." She grinned and climbed into the ring.
"Who else? No one? Here, Venom, you."
There was a sigh before a second girl climbed into the ring. Her hair was light brown, cut short. Her eyes, once green, we're now milky white, marking her as blind; and if it weren't for her necklace, she would be. Thanks to the enchanted metal, she could at least see in black and white and was therefore still allowed in the army; also because she may or may not have threatened the Commander to let her stay.
"Jade, put this on." Mitch tossed her a black blindfold before holding out a hand to Venom. "Give me the necklace."
The dangerous girl gave him an equally dangerous look before closing her eyes and pulling her necklace off of her head, dropping it in his hand.
"I promise I'll take good care of it." Mitch assured her before he put a wooden practice dagger in her hand and an identical one in Jade's hand. "At the ready." He stepped out of the ring and both Dual Legioneers assumed attack position.
"Scared, Morrow?" Jade hissed so only they could hear.
The ghost of a smirk touched Venom's lips, although neither could see it. "You wish."
    "Fight!"
Immediately, Venom darted forwards and Jade reeled back. She jolted her dagger up and she heard wood clash on wood, and knew their practice blades had struck. She heard a footstep and was glad the fellow onlooking Dual Legioneers were silent so she could hear.
She ducked under a blade she thought was above but simply got hit in the face with it instead. It was her mistake to make a tiny cry of surprise and a half second later, she was flat on her back with Venom's boot print in her pride.
"Well done Venom!" She heard Mitch say. "Although you did have some prior practice but-"
Suddenly, Jade heard a loud clatter followed by a thud. She pushed herself quickly up and pushed off her blindfold. There, standing between her and a now grounded Venom, was Felladere.
She gasped in alarm, getting up. "Fells! It's just a practice match, leave her!"
Venom groaned as she got up, Mitch quickly putting the necklace on her. She looked up at Fells and for once, looked surprise by his appearance, and on top of that, he was perhaps two entire feet taller than her.
Jade moved between them, pushing Fells behind her. "He didn't understand the rules, I'm sorry, he's not from around here!"
Everyone stared at them for a moment before she heard Mitch speak.
"Well done, both of you... Class dismissed."
Jade watched as the other Legioneers file out of the room before she turned to Venom again. "Teacher's pet." She hissed.
    "Jackass." Venom replied.
    "White-eyes."
    "Angel Cake."
The two glared at each other solidly for a moment before Venom smirked. "Till next time."
"Till then." Jade winked before she turned and hopped out of the training pen. "C'mon, Fells."
Fells spread his wings and flew the short distance over the barrier of the ring, landing and following after Jade obediently.
"I get that you're all chivalrous and everything pal, but you don't have to protect me all the time like that." Jade said. "I do know how to protect myself."
"Apologies." Fells replied. "I did not fully understand the nature of the exercise. I thought you were in danger."
"Not this time. Hey, and speaking of danger, let's go check on Sara."
"The girl who broke two vertebrae, the one you carried. Saramelia Lazorso."
"Saramelia Lazorso... It has been a day since we last saw her. I suppose you wish to see is she is alive."
    "You're not wrong, bud."

Sara looked up as her Infirmary room door opened. Seto was sitting on the edge of her bed and he looked too. As soon as she saw Fells her eyes widened in some astonished emotion and she yelped something in Italian.
"Hang on, hang on, he's okay! He helped you escape. I'll explain what he is later, I promise." Jade said.
Sara stared at her warily, but said nothing else.
Jade looked to Seto. "What's the news...?"
"Not great..." Seto stood. "I've already told her, but... The bones she broke were vital in her lower body. I can't promise she'll ever walk again."
Jade's face fell and she looked at Sara, who was looking down. "...Sara, I'm so sorry..."
"Nah, don't worry... I'm just sad I won't be on the team anymore."
"You're still on the team!" Jade grabbed her hand quickly. "You just... Can't go on many missions."
Sara simply sighed wistfully. Felladere was looking on with curiosity.
For a few hours, the girls say there, talking about how things would be from now on. She would still be doing her job at the adoption center as a veterinarian, despite the wheelchair she would need from now on. Every so often, Sara would give Fells a look, like she didn't trust him. He couldn't blame her, because they didn't know each other well.
Then a siren rang from all over the base.
Jade looked up, looking clearly confused. "What?"
Seto was already out of the room. Fells looked at Jade in confusion. "What is that noise?"
Jade looked at Sara and both shared some quick, silent conversation before Jade led Fells swiftly out of the Infirmary and down the corridor. "The base is under attack."
"But why did you seem confused?"
"Because we haven't been attacked in over a year." Jade sighed. "You know how I told you not to protect me?"
    "Yes."
"Scratch that. In battles, you fight, and you fight on the side of humanity. Just stay by me."
