20. An echo in the past Part I

He dreamt many things, he dreamt he was in love with the moon. He saw many memories, some that weren't even his own. In one of them, he was in an abandoned forest, a woman with silver - white hair stood before him. Her skin, as smooth as silk shone like the stars whilst her smile glittered and her pale lavender eyes shone as she smiled up at him. The lavender gown she wore was a match for her eyes, flowing beautifully around her like a waterfall. The gown billowed around her in the warm evening breeze.

"I've been waiting for you, Rohen." She said in a flowing voice. "What took you so long?"

She had a playful tone as she beckoned him over.

Her name came easy to his lips, almost as if he had known her his entire life.

"Celine." He breathed.

That was her name, he knew, and yet he could not for the life of him fathom why she looked like Nymeria.

This is your truth. Are you prepared to face it?

He woke with a start. Disoriented. The dream he had had slowly disappearing from his mind. Rising up from where he lay, he found he was in some dark cave. There appeared to be light coming from the other side of the cave so he followed it.

There were many voices all around him but he ignored them. Something drew him to the light. Something he found quite familiar.

There were echoes along the stone walls of the cave calling out to him but he barely heard them as he followed the light to its source. It was his own siren's song. Urging him on like a long lost lover.

He finally came to a large opening. A chamber of sorts and in the middle of it was what looked like a large stone chair. Or throne, he supposed. What really drew his attention was its occupant because he looked exactly like him. Well, maybe the only difference was the hair. Whilst Arthur's own was pitch black, this stranger had fiery red hair. And he seemed somehow older and wiser.

It was from this stranger that the light seemed to be coming from. The air around him radiated power. Any other person would have been greatly intimidated but Arthur did not feel intimidated at all. He felt strangely at ease in the presence of this stranger. When he raised his eyes to him, Arthur was met by eyes the color of molten lava.

"Do you know who I am?" He asked.

Of course his lips never moved but Arthur heard him clearly enough in his head. His voice was just like his own it startled him. He simply shook his head in response.

He watched as his redheaded doppelganger gave him a small smile.

"Don't worry. You will." He went on, his kind smile never once faltering.

For a moment the redhead's attention was caught by something behind him.

"For now, you have others to meet." He went on as he beckoned Arthur to look behind him. "Truths to learn and accept. Or not. That is purely your decision to make."

This completely baffled Arthur for a moment. He had never met anyone so cryptic before because what he was saying made no sense at all.

That is of course until Arthur turned around to face the new presence in the cave. Whatever positive emotions he had vanished. In his presence now stood the fallen king Oberon.

In the dark, his auburn hair looked black. There was a shadow of a beard on his chin and the wrinkle lines on his cheeks were proof of his cheery nature. But there was nothing cheery about his mood. His grey eyes held only worry and regret and as he looked upon his son he could not help be weary.

"Hello Arthur." Oberon said to him in a steady voice.

"You." Arthur said to him in distaste. "Why are you here?"

Arthur immediately turned back to the redhead to tell him he had no desire to speak with this man. However, where he had been - where his stone throne had stood - now only an empty chasm remained. It was as if he had never been there in the first place. As if he had never existed.

"It appears King Rohen decided to give us some privacy." Oberon said to him with a closed eye smile.

At the back of his mind, Arthur wondered where he had heard that name before. Inadvertently, he could not help but loathe the man in front of him. The man who had turned out to be his father.

"I know you have a lot of questions for me." Oberon continued.

He did, naturally, but Arthur would be damned before he admitted it to the man.

"You didn't answer mine." He opted to say. "Why are you here."

"It appears I am here because you need my help, somehow." Oberon said softly.

"Tch. Well that is highly unlikely." Arthur said with a role of his eyes.

Oberon did not miss anything. He saw as the emotions passed through his son's face and understood them.

"I know things have not been easy for you. I know I'm also to blame for that. You probably hate for that." He said to him.

"I truly am sorry for everything. In all honesty, I wish we could have met under far less - dark - circumstances. Unfortunately, this is all we get."

Arthur simply pursed his lips. He did not wish to say anything to the man in front of him. He could feel the anger bubbling within him - feel the fire rising- and because of that he knew nothing good would come from responding to anything king Oberon said.

If this was the test he was expected to take then he would definitely fail. He could only imagine how the guardian of the waterfall of truth would enjoy his torture.

"So... What would you like to hear first?" Oberon asked with a nervous laugh.

"I'm sorry, you really think I care what you have to say to me?" Arthur asked back.

Despite his promise to himself to maintain his cool demeanor, he found he could not do so anymore.

"You had years - nearly two decades even - to say whatever you wanted to say to me." He spat.

"I know, and believe me I wanted to. You have no idea how much." Oberon replied with a downcast expression. "But I could not do that. I could not break the promise I made your mother. She wanted you to be safe, to be happy and live a long and healthy life. With that in mind she made me promise I would stay away. For your safety."

"Well, not that it matters now." Arthur said matter-of-factly. "Whatever promises you  made to my mother, you broke them anyways."

He took a deep breath to steady his breathing before he looked up again at Oberon.

"I'm curious, how exactly did you think you could help me, if I had wanted your help?" He proceeded to ask.
