Chapter 5

When I eventually go through the double doors myself, I'm greeted by Zack, who explains that he got told to wait here for me and then we could go through the door opposite us.

"You ready?" He asks, and I nod, even though I'm not sure if I'll ever be ready.

He pushes open the door and we step into a bedroom lined with three beds on one side of the room and four on the other. Five of the beds have people on them.

I step forward since Zack seems to be a little nervous for some reason and I start to introduce us. "Hi, I'm Sho and this is-"

I'm cut off as one of the boys who was sitting on the bed closest to us leaps up and in less than a second, he has Zack pinned against the wall. "You fucker! You have some guts showing your face around me!"

The only other boy and I start trying to pull him off of Zack, but it's proving difficult.

Apparently Zack has more of an idea why this guy is shouting at him since he replies, "I didn't make him take the shit! It was his choice!"

The guy isn't listening, and it isn't until Zack's other saviour and I have finally pulled him off that one of the girls steps forward. "I think we should all agree to not hurt each other while we're here."

Zack's attacker spits out an answer, "you have no idea what he's done! He ruined my brother's life!"

Zack sighs and finally gives us some form of explanation. "I'm sure you've already introduced yourselves, but in case you haven't, this is Giorgio, his brother bought steroids off me a few months ago and nearly killed himself by taking an overdose. His brother lost his whole career thanks to it, and this guy hasn't stopped attacking me online for months over it."

The fact that Zack has or does sell drugs is a shock to me. I would never have thought that by looking at him, but I guess you can't always trust someone based on how they look. I guess that's the explanation for which law he broke.

"Ok, let's all agree that we should start again," the same girl from before speaks up. "For the two new boys, hi, I'm Estelle Brava, I wrote a book series called Siege of Dragons, and I'm currently helping to write a screenplay for an adaptation of the series."

The only person who didn't stand up now does and I'm shocked to see that it's Kaori Satori. She turns to us and speaks up, "for anyone who isn't one of my 20 million followers, hi, I'm Kaori Satori, I'm a social media influencer."

The boy who helped me save Zack rolls his eyes. "Kaori, must you show off all the time? Whatever. Hello everyone, my name is Richard Parton, but you can call me Rich. My dad is the owner of a pharmaceutical company and I am their heir to his estate and the business."

"Ooh, me next!" The final girl says. With her blonde hair, she looks like a token sorority girl. "Hi, I'm Rhiannon Cortana and I'm the daughter of the famous actress Sabrina Cortana, star of Revenge of the Crusaders and Stardust Express. I'm on my way to becoming a movie star too, and I'm super excited to be here. Oh, and I know Rhiannon is like, a super long name so you can call me Rhia or Rhi or anything you like really!"

She seems nice I guess, but she's very talkative.

Giorgio speaks up next. "Giorgio Rodrigez, star volleyball player for Brazil's national team. I play the setter which is one of the most important roles. My brother used to play on the same team until his career was ruined."

Zacks sighs again, but he still introduces himself. "Hey, I'm Zack Richmond. I created a popular video game called Dungeon Masters, and yes, in order to kickstart the game I did sell drugs for a while but I've given it up. I know it was wrong and if I could go back and stop myself from being that stupid, I would. So Giorgio, once again, I'm sorry."

"Whatever."

I guess I'm last then. I step forward and take a breath, nervous to follow after so many famous faces. "Um, hi. I'm Sho Kuronaga and I was the lottery winner."

I stop and everyone except Zack stares at me. Kaori is the one who speaks up, "is that it? Don't you have a job or don't your parents have jobs?"

Zack comes to my rescue. "Hey, he's plenty cool without having some fancy job title. And he doesn't have to answer your questions. Let him open up to you in his own time."

Whatever Kaori or anyone else was going to say in response is cut short by the same voice from before echoing from somewhere in the room. "Good evening contestants. As Sho and Zack failed the first challenge, you will not be receiving any food for the next 24 hours. Tomorrow you will participate in another challenge for a chance to win back that privilege as well as some other amenities. Until then, just relax and get to know each other. After all, you're stuck with each other whether you like it or not."

Giorgio immediately turns on Zack. "Great, you show up late, lose a challenge and now we all have to suffer because of you and the lottery kid."

Zack scowls and snaps, "well I would say we're suffering just as much. We're all stuck with you. And I'm the reason we lost that challenge, so don't blame it on Sho."

"You keep defending him. You've done it three times now. Is he your boyfriend or something?"

I look straight at Zack, begging silently for him to say the right thing. Luckily, he does. "No he's not my boyfriend, but we're friends and it's not like any of you were going to stick up for him. You were all quick to turn your noses up at him the second you knew he was the lottery winner."

"I for one don't care that he's the lottery winner," Rhia says. She slumps down on her bed, resting her head in her hands as she stares at me. "He's super cute though."

I blush and look away because I do not want to see her staring at me.

Luckily, someone stops her, but for once it isn't' Zack. Rich snaps his fingers in her face. "Hey, don't stare at him like he's a piece of meat. Leave the poor kid alone."

I don't like the fact that apart from Zack, most of them are treating me like a child. I mean sure, I'm not as experienced as some of them in relationships or even in life, but that doesn't mean I'm immature or something.

"Anyway, sorry to change the subject," Estelle interrupts, "but what do you all think about the challenges? I mean, having to win them in order to eat? That's not fair, right?"

It's here that I realise that there's a huge problem. My task as the traitor is to make sure we fail every challenge. But if I do that, eventually we'll starve to death. This means I'll need to let them win one challenge every so often, but if they win three, I'm out.
