Chapter 4
The first question is easy enough. Who was the third President of America? I type in Thomas Jefferson and my score in the top corner increases to 1. Only 99 to go.
The second question however is much harder. What is the chemical symbol for Potassium? I was rubbish at science.
"Zack, what's the chemical symbol for Potassium?" I ask.
Zack thinks for a second. "No idea, P maybe?"
I try typing in P, but the screen flashes red. I look over to Zack and watch as a rather large amount of water falls on him. How he doesn't even flinch is anyone's guess.
I'm surprised when I naturally cry out, "Zack! Are you ok?"
He wipes his eyes with his hands, but other than that he seems unphased. "I'm fine. What's the next question?"
–
There's only two minutes to go and I still need two more correct answers. The final few questions have been very difficult. This next one is quite easy though, since it's about the guy in the room with me. Who created the video game Dungeon Masters? I type in Zack's name and the score goes up to 99. Just one more.
I get the next few wrong and there's only thirty seconds left. I start to panic and begin reading Zack the questions, hoping his brain will work faster than mine. How he's even still able to talk after the number of times he's had water dropped on him, I have no idea.
"The name of the guy who discovered Penicillin?"
"Alexander something!"
"Any idea on his last name?"
"I think it starts with F but I don't know!"
I try typing in just Alexander and the screen goes red. I probably have one more try. The final question that shows up is one I luckily know the answer to, but I have only five seconds to type it in.
I've just typed it out, and I hover the mouse over the submit button when the screen goes blank and the voice echoes through the room. "You have failed."
"Fuck, I'm sorry Sho," Zack says, placing a rather wet hand on my shoulder. "I should've got that one right. His first name was definitely Alexander. I know it."
"It's not your fault. You got way more of those answers than I did."
"Yeah. I guess, but I kind of wanted that to happen."
I look over at him in shock. "What? You wanted me to get them wrong?"
"Fuck, no. Ugh, I only said I was stupid so you'd be the one typing the answers. The voice never said you couldn't ask for help, so I just thought if I stand in the centre and let the water drop on me, you'd be better off answering the questions. I did it for you."
Tears start to form in my eyes. No one has ever done something that nice for me in my life. I've known Zack for less than a day and he's already shown he cares about me more than any other person I've ever met. "Thanks."
He grabs my hand and uses his other hand to wipe my tears. "You're welcome."
A man comes into the room carrying two bags. They're not our bags, but black and they look pretty empty. He holds them out to us. "Change into these clothes and leave the bags in the red circle alongside the clothes you're wearing. Zack, when you're ready, go through the two doors in the corner. Sho, wait here for further instructions."
"What are you going to do with him?" Zack questions defensively.
"Nothing," the man replies. "Now get changed." And with that, he disappears through the main door we entered through.
The bags both contain the same things. A black jumpsuit and a jacket, both emblazoned with numbers on them. Mine has a 4, Zack's has a 6.
When we're both changed and we've done as the man said and placed the bags in the middle alongside our old clothes, Zack gives me a hug. "If they hurt you in any way, I'll fucking kill them, ok?"
"Please don't kill them. I'm not a celebrity like the rest of you. I'm not even that important."
He looks straight at me as he says, "hey, you're important to me. We're friends, yeah?"
"Yeah."
"Good. Then stay safe. I'll see you soon."
"Hopefully," I mutter. And I watch as Zack leaves. The doors slam shut behind him, and as soon as they do, the speaker echoes through the room again.
"Hello Sho. How are you right now?"
"A little scared, I guess?" I reply.
"You have no need to be scared. Nothing bad is going to happen. Yet. Now, I'm sure you remember the huge cash prize we're offering to the winner?"
I'm not sure why she's bringing this up at a time like this, but sure, I remember it. How could anyone like me forget something that big. "Yeah, I do."
"Well, I'm about to tell you how this is going to work. Over the next three weeks, you and the other six contestants will be participating in various challenges. Each week, one person will be voted off by the other contestants. You will be playing as the traitor. Your role is to sabotage the others by making sure they fail each challenge. If you are voted off by the team at any point, the cash prize will be split between the remaining contestants. If however by the end of the third week you are still in the running, you will win the entire prize all for yourself. You must not tell anyone about the challenges or about our conversation. Do you understand, Sho?"
"I understand." I definitely understand. But how am I supposed to get six people to trust me, while also making sure they fail every challenge. "What happens if they pass a challenge?"
"That's ok. If they pass more than three however, you will lose automatically."
So, I need to somehow make sure these guys fail, while also making myself not look suspicious. This is going to be harder than I thought.
