Stay Low

"Sometimes the monster isn't in front the gun." - Unknown.

You know how people tell you to not get involved in life threatening situations? Like dealing with drugs, fucking with the wrong people, and on top of it all, taking beatings left and right.

Well growing up, no one told me that rule so I had no idea what the repercussions were.

The thing is, I'm a drug dealer, I've been shipping drugs throughout the city with the police hanging off my ass throughout the way, I won't state the reason, let's be honest here, no one likes a sob story.

I've been drug dealing ever since I was sixteen years old. Balancing school work, dealing and taking care of my younger brother had taken over my aspirations in life. Eventually I got my GED and dropped out since my younger brother needed support as much as possible.

I'm just a guy trying to live his life.

My girlfriend, Gia had been helping me out ever since she graduated high school. Even though I hated for her to do this sort of thing for me I appreciate everything she has done.

Our dad had walked out on us before my thirteenth birthday, leaving me to support the family. Our mother died from cancer shortly after I turned eighteen, leaving my little brother Greg with me.

Greg is pretty humble, uses words instead of fists to negotiate with people. Greg is now thirteen years old, he doesn't know that I deal with drugs so far, once I send Greg to a decent school I'd find another job. He had been in and out of school due to how demanding my clients get with their fixes.

As for me, I have my own problems. What the hell does perfect even mean?

My mind quickly fogs up as Gia aggressively waved her manicured hand in front of my face in annoyance. My eyes flicker around. We sat at the corner booth of an Itlalian restaurant that had looked like it hadn't been upgraded in decades, if you looked around you could see dead plants near the fogged windows, chucked wooden mohagony tiles on th floor and peeling wallpapers everywhere.

Still, the place looked to fancy for my taste. I wore a black vest over my plain white tank top along with leather pants, my black hair slicked back in a sloppy attempt to look nice.

Gia had been sitting directly across from me, the velvet red cushions on the seat making weird sounds as I tap my fingers against it.

"Did you zone out again?" Gia asks me, her clear Russian accent sending a chill down my spine. My blurry eyes stop scanning around the restaurant and on my girlfriend's hazel green eyes that narrowed down at me in a bit of frustration. Just by looking at Gia I wonder how lucky I had to be finding a beautiful woman like her.

Her tight platinum blonde curls hung loosely over her shoulders framing her beautifully sculpted olive face, she takes one strand and tucks it behind her ear.

Her red painted fingers tighten around the handle of her coffee cup. "You're zoning out again! You've completely missed out on what I was saying!"

I exhale. "Shit, sorry Gia, I didn't mean to."

Gia giggles. "No it's fine, it happens a lot." She spoke good-naturedly.

"Way too damn much." I groaned, leaning against the soft velvet colored cushion of the booth. Gia looks at the window.

"Well since you didn't hear me the first time, I'll bring it up again." Gia went on, setting her cup down on the plate with a soft clink. I nod, taking a sip out of my silver flask.

"You should move in with me." Gia blurts out, pressing her elbows against the polished table. I spat out my whiskey in shock.

"Move in? G, I wouldn't want to rush things." My words tumble over one another as I try not to offend my girlfriend.

"I'm not trying to move up another step in our relationship. But you need help, you're supporting Greg right? You're low with money, how are you going to be able to keep this up. I'm worried about you Kit, this is draining you more than you think." Gia confesses, her hands snaking up to mine.

"You don't need to say anything right away, I understand it's a huge stretch, but I only want the best for you two." Gia goes on, interlocking her tiny fingers with my hands. "But think about it."

"I will." I reassure her. "You worry too much G." She rolled her eyes soon as those words left my mouth.

"Hey! I'm your girlfriend smartass, it's my job to worry about you!" Gia exclaims. I chuckle at her defensive demeanor.

My phone vibrates in my left pocket, my hand breaks from Gia's gentle touch and reaches down to grab it. I answer it hastily with annoyance.

"Hello?" I growl.

The phone answers back. "It's me, Jace, we have this huge deal today, we need you here right now." My co-worker a.k.a my best friend Jace urges. Angrily, I lean back.

"How important?" I ask him.

"Very, the money is an offer you can't refuse." Jace pried. My eyes widen slightly, we need this fucking money, I refuse to be dead weight on Gia's shoulders.

If I leave now and make this deal work, the money can go right into Greg's school, I could buy something nice for Gia, more importantly I'd make everyone else happy.

This is my chance to make things work.

"I'll be there shortly." I answer. At the corner of my peripheral I could see Gia's lips curling downwards, she's the only woman who knows about the drug dealing scenario, she isn't too wild about the idea.

Once I hung up, I gaze at Gia who is calmly staring out the window, her chin resting on her hands as the sunset shown over her flawless face.

I open my mouth to apologize. "I'm sorry-" But Gia instantly cuts me off.

"Just go." Gia urged, her voice shown nothing but disappointment.

I lean forward, kissing her forehead before dropping some bucks on the table. Gia gives me a faint smile as I rush out of the restaurant.

I don't know how much I'm going to keep this up.
