Tragedy Of War

It's late into the war. A man sits with a woman talking. They are deep into a discussion when the man says

"I will come back. I promise you this. I will be back for you and the baby."

"But why go at all? You still have the chance to get out." The woman replies with tears in her eyes.

"You see the other men around this room? Each and every one of them is a brother of mine. Now and until the end. They depend on me and I will not disappoint them. I will go but I will be back. I will be back for you."

"You can't promise something that is god's to decide."

"Neither god nor an army from hell will stop me from coming back to you. Now let's have one more dance before the night is over and I must leave."

They dance in each other's arms. For a moment it's like there isn't a war raging on thousands of miles away in Europe. For a moment it is like they were young children again, dancing, playing, and laughing. All the while in the back of their minds is what if. What if he never comes home? What if the baby becomes a fatherless child in this new and scary world. But neither speaks a word of it in fear of ruining the moment that they want to last forever. By the end of the song he must leave and go to the hell that has forsaken the Earth now for the past four years. By the end of the song he will be out of her sight. He will no longer be safe in her mind. The thought of this makes her eyes tear again but she does not cry. She does not want him to feel as if she has no faith in his promise, His promise to come home to her.

They write each other as much as the possibly can. By this time the man is a seasoned veteran in combat and the woman is very far along in the pregnancy. "This war will be over soon." He says in his letters. The papers and radio say the same thing but who is to know for sure. Only god knows when he will be allowed to leave and come back home to her. Only then will she be able to sleep at night without worries and terrible nightmares. Only then will the man stop thinking about her at home. Only then can they have any true happiness. Not the fake happiness that they both express in their letters back and forth but true happiness for their love is pure. Their love is true love. Without each other in their arm's they are not truly happy.

"This is to be their last stand before we take control." He says in a letter to her. This is a true statement but this control comes at a cost. In the heat of battle, bullets flying, men screaming and bomb exploding. This is the cost of any war. The battle rages on for a countless number of days for the soldiers. After the smoke settles, there lay the man face down in a puddle of blood and mud. He is considered to be among the dead.

When the woman hears about such a thing she is devastated. But at this time she must be strong for the new born child. The child need's a father and she need's reason to live. After nearly five years of raising the child herself with help from her mother, she marries a friend of that man. Another soldier. Another man that she has fallen in love with. They spend two years with each other until one day their came a knocking at the door. The man from before is standing in full clean pressed uniform.

"I spent the past seven years in a war camp, they came for us. Just as they promised. So I came to you, just as I promised." What he didn't realize is that she is happily married to another. One who didn't need to make any promises like him before he. One that was always there. She lays there on the steps crying and apologizing as he walks away. He walks away but this time it will be the last time he walks away from her. She read's it in the paper the next day, making front page titled "Local War Hero, Home At Last." He left that house the previous day only to go into a drunken rage for his loss of his love. The loss of his heart. The man no longer having a heart to beat or a reason to live on. He left behind a letter that the police later brought to his ex-lover, in the letter it said:

Dear...

I write this final letter to you now. I am sure that you know how you have hurt me. I spent so much time in that camp and yet the thing that tormented me most wasn't the tortures or the abusive soldiers holding us but the thought of being away from you. The thought of seeing you again was what got me through those terrible times. Now I haven't reason to live my love. I will go but only for now for I will keep my promise. I will reach the gates and sit at the steps waiting the day for you to join me. Take your time my love for I have all the time in the world to wait.

Truly forever yours,

She couldn't believe after all that happened he still loved her. He still felt the same he did the day they had their last dance. Upon thinking back to that night and the many they spent together before that she smiled and her heart filled with happiness. But as soon as it came it was gone again for her happiness turned to sorrow and guilt for her role in her ex-lovers suicide. She knew she didn't deserve him. She didn't deserve anything but a cold grave and an eternity in hell. Her new husband found her, lying on the bathroom floor. Blood covering the mirrors, with a letter on the counter.

Dear Husband,

I haven't been totally honest with you. I am not and have never been truly in love with you. I have and always loved your dear friend that we thought for so many years fell during the war. I know you could never understand but I deserve only hells burning flames. When it is your time and you see him give me my apologies. Tell him t was him all along. Tell him that I was wrong, I made a mistake and I know that he should never forgive me but I know he already does. For he has an undying true love for me that I was so willing to throw away.

The letter ended there so abruptly. The child raised by his stepfather alone. The legends say that he waited at the steps until she arrived. When she did arrive they danced one last time...
