Chapter 3

Markerpaw was walking back to camp with his friend, Lightingpaw and their mentor, Blackthroat. He and Lightningpaw were carrying prey, and Blackthroat having two in his jaws with one curled in his tail. He hasn't told anyone how he met up with the Friendclan apprentice, Sawpaw, the other night. They reached camp and walked towards the fresh-kill pile, dropping their finding onto the pile. Markerpaw turned around to see Treestar chatting with the gray she-cat, Remoteclaw. Treestar looked pleased to talk to her. Their interaction caused Markerpaw to smile. He padded to the apprentice den, sitting beside it. Markerpaw looked around the camp, not sure what to do now. He looked in the den to see Bubblepaw and Fannypaw talking with each other and Lightningpaw settling down on a moss bed. Later on, Blackthroat invited Markerpaw to a patrol, Markerpaw accepting and padded to the gorse tunnel with his mentor. Remoteclaw, Penciltail, Matchspot, and Flowerfur waited for them at the entrance of the tunnel, padding out of it. The request of Markerpaw joining the patrol with everyone else was probably a sign of him getting his warrior name soon. After some time checking the border and hunting, he came back with the patrol. Again like earlier, he placed the prey he caught down onto the pile, walking away. He heard footsteps behind him, turning around to see his leader, Treestar. Before Markerpaw could say anything questioning him following him, Treestar told him to get rest. Markerpaw gave him a confusing look. "Why?" He asked. "Gathering is tonight. I was thinking of taking you." Treestar replied calmly, Markerpaw remembering about the full moon tonight. Markerpaw nodded and darted toward the apprentice den, slipping inside and walking to a moss bed. Markerpaw laid on his side and stretched his legs apart, falling into a deep sleep. He woke up in the camp, something horribly wrong. Clan members darted out the tunnel, the sound of yowling of terror and something else. He heard rumbling of a twoleg monster. "Markerpaw get out of there!" A voice called out, Markerpaw looking around and panting. "Help!" He called out. He was crouched against the ground, claws unsheathed to fight back whatever attacked him. He woke up to a hiss from Fannypaw. "Be quiet!" Fannypaw yowled, getting up from her own moss bed. "We probably have to go to the gathering soon, so I suggest we'd get out of here." Fannypaw mewed, calming down. Markerpaw nodded then raised himself up from the bed he laid in, walking out the apprentice den with Fannypaw. They saw the warriors going to the gathering rounding up around the tunnel, Treestar leading the group. Markerpaw flicked his tail at the group, joining the traveling warriors. After some time of waiting, everyone began walking out the camp. Markerpaw leaped while walking, this was his first time going to a gathering. Fannypaw looked at him, her blue eyes glaring at him. Markerpaw went out the crowd for a second, seeing Treestar walking beside Remoteclaw and Blackthroat. Markerpaw walked back into the group, his paws padding against the smooth, long grass. The strong scent of prey filled his nostrils, resisting it and staying with everyone. After some time of walking, they reached Fourtrees. Markerpaw looked around, seeing the other clans gathered around with the three leaders waiting for the fourth. Treestar then crouched down and leaped up highly onto the rock, sitting down beside the other three leaders. Chatter surrounded Markerpaw and Fannypaw, the two looking at each other blankly. Then a yowl sounded from the rock, looking at the leaders Golfstar, Loserstar, Donutstar, and Treestar. Golfstar stood up opening her mouth. She talked about how a new warrior, Grassyfoot, was in vigil and stayed back at camp. Treestar smiled happily and excitedly, proud about his brother's new life as a warrior. Golfstar sat back down, allowing Loserstar to speak. But he remained on the rock, staring down. Winnerheart stepped on the rock and shuffled his leader aside, being the one to speak instead of Loserstar. "The day before, dogs attacked our camp. We lost our warrior, Robotfang that day. Some warriors still sit in vigil for him." Winnerheart said, murmurs of shock ringing from the crowd of cats. Golfstar hissed for silence, letting Winnerheart say anything else. "We also made a new warrior, Leafstorm." Winnerheart added. Treestar leaped up in excitement, Donutstar murmuring to him to calm down. Winnerheart padded down the rock, allowing the next leader to give updates about their clan. But Donutstar didn't stand, instead, he allowed Treestar to talk. Treestar told everyone about their discovery they made not to long ago. How dogs were beginning to hunt on their territory. Since the gathering ended, everyone began to chat again, different cats from different clans talking about the events the leaders have reported about to their friends. Markerpaw watched as his leader leaped down from the rock with Blackthroat following. Treestar flicked his tail for his clan to follow him, all Lifeclan members following. Markerpaw walked beside Fannypaw and the medicine cat, Piefeather. That was Markerpaw's first gathering, being the only 2 apprentices going. They reached camp after some time of walking. Markerpaw padded to the apprentice den, looking back to see Treestar saying goodnight to Remoteclaw. Markerpaw looked back foward, walking inside the apprentice den. He settled down on a moss bed that was next to Fannypaw's, closing his eyes slowly to drift into a nice rest. Markerpaw woke up, getting up and stretching his body. He then padded out the den,  the scent of Lifeclan cats lingering all around camp. Then footsteps so frequent sounded at the gorse tunnel. It was the warrior, Gateheart, and she didn't look good at all. Her body was covered with some wounds and scars mostly on her hind legs. Gateheart warned everyone how their camp was getting attacked by dogs, and they needed help. Fannypaw and Markerpaw peeked out from the den, staring at the wounded periwinkle she-cat. Many clan members surrounded Gateheart with shock-filled eyes. Treestar ordered Blackthroat to send some warriors to fight against the dogs with Friendclan, but Fannypaw darted out the den and through the gorse tunnel out, Markerpaw darting after her hesitantly. The two apprentices heard their names being yelled out, the two ignoring the calls. Finally, they reached the tunnel to the Friendclan camp, running through it. Immediately the two targeted a dog. The dog was stalking up a Friendclan apprentice that fell limp and was breathing heavily. Markerpaw leaped up and slashed the side of the dog's head. Markerpaw felt his claws digging into the dog's head, the dog shaking it's head side to side while backing up. The apprentice he was protecting was Tacopaw, the young she-cat flinging her eyelids open to see Markerpaw challenging the large dog. Markerpaw drew his lips back into a snarl, revealing his sharp fangs. Markerpaw shrunk back and leaped at the dog again, getting swatted by it's large paws. Markerpaw slided on his side against the ground, jumping up and shaking some sand off his fur. He ran toward the dog and leaped highly, landing on the dog's back and shifting himself where his fangs were just above the dog's tuft. He then sank his fangs into the dog's tuft, the dog shaking violently to try to get him off. Markerpaw then ripped a large piece of the dog's neck fur off, the dog howling in pain and anger. The dog evacuated out the gorse tunnel, some Lifeclan members charging in to fight the rest of the dogs that were attacking. Markerpaw gasped in shock as he watched Fannypaw attacking another dog, having some wounds on her torso. She was growling and hissing at it, with a Friendclan warrior, Coinfur, beside her shrunken back to leap on it. Markerpaw ran over to them, joining their threaten to attack. When Coinfur yowled, Markerpaw darted behind the dog and bit onto it's hind legs, the dog's focus going onto him. The dog swung it's head back and snapped at Markerpaw, Coinfur leaping up and biting onto the dog's neck fur. Fannypaw leaped on it's back and slashed a claw at it. The dog shook side to side to try to get all three cats off. Then all three cats flung off, the dog running out the camp. After some time of attacking, all dogs   have evacuated the Friendclan camp. Some cats were wounded, none were dead, except one. At the center of the camp, Gateheart was carrying the dead body of Spongepelt. Then she crouched down and placed his body on the sandy ground, rising back up and staring at his lifeless body. Friendclan warriors surrounded the dead body of the elder. Treestar gathered his clan members around so they could leave, but before they did, their leader sat next to Donutstar looking down at the dead elder. Donutstar murmured his thanks to Treestar, Treestar nodding and walking back to his gathered clan. He flicked his tail to the entrance, leaving with Remoteclaw at his side and the chosen warriors leaving. Immediately when they got to camp, Treestar leaped onto the high rock and yowled for everyone to come around, every cat exciting their dens. Once everyone came around, he called for Markerpaw and Fannypaw to come forward to the base of the high rock. Markerpaw already knew what was going to happen. They were getting their warrior names.
