"Ready To Comply." (chapter 6)

His legs found their way back to the white door he had shown to the soldier earlier. He didn't know if he should knock, privacy came first of course. Not that you had any privacy at HYDRA, but he thought she could use someone that treated her like a lady, because she deserved it.

He knocked with his right hand, understanding that if he knocks with his left hand the door would probably break. He tried to keep his energy inside, which was extremely hard as for some reason a lot of adrenaline pumped through his veins.

'Can I come in?' his rough voice asked, waiting for an answer from his soldier. The woman responded, a soft 'okay,' filling the small room. That was Barnes his cue to come in, and so he did. His feet stepped inside the room only to realize how small the bedroom actually was.

There were big bags under her eyes, she seemed tired and it looked like she had just thrown away the blankets. She had probably jumped inside her trousers as they seemed to be thrown on the ground; she hadn't worn any clothes before the assassin came in.

Barnes knew Rogers was right, that she could be dangerous, but when she laid her head against the wall closest to her bed and closed her eyes he forgot she was a trained killer, because all he saw was a broken woman, trying to keep herself together.

Yet it was true, they had to know her trigger-words. If they didn't know them, there was no way they could control her when something happened, or when they actually needed the bloodthirsty soldier. And when he knew her words, he could figure out her past, and he promised to find out who she is.

'I know you are not going to like this, me neither to be honest. But I need you to tell me your trigger words,' he whispered, his voice sounding like one big piece of sadness. He didn't want to do this, but he had no choice really. They would ask her soon enough, and he figured out it would be best that he was the one to ask.

'I figured they would ask me sooner than later,' she softly said, her eyes now open and staring at her captain. She was afraid, every inch of her body was shaking and her eyes were wider than they could have normally been, she was clenching her bed and she didn't care that he saw her like this.

'But I'm afraid to, captain,' she then whispered, showing a piece of her humanity. She felt relaxed and comfortable whenever in the present of the veteran, and she hoped he did too. Yet that didn't mean she couldn't be afraid anymore. HYDRA was smart, the soldiers didn't know how to write or spell their trigger words, they could only say them, meaning that when they did, they immediately got "triggered" which was going to happen to her when she followed her captain's orders.

'That's okay, you're going to be fine,' he lied, as he knew himself what was going to happen. He had seen this before, all the generations of Winter Soldiers he had seen, were exactly like her. HYDRA had gotten smarted, they had gotten more bloodthirsty, and Barnes didn't like it.

'I trust you,' she said. She stood up, now being close to her captain's height. Her bare feet touched the cold ground but she wasn't showing any sign she was cold, she stood there, afraid, shaking, as that was all her body could do, drained from the time she got wiped and the long fly to America. She was having a jetlag, and a big one.

'And I trust you, soldier,' Barnes responded, finding a smile on his face. That woman was the only one able to make him smile except from Rogers, and that meant a great deal to him. It was very rarely he showed any sort of affection, as his walls were high enough to keep everyone outside. Tough she was very close to breaking them.

Without hesitation she took the assassin's hand. Her cold fingers touched his wrist and she felt how Barnes inhaled loudly. Any form of human touch, was too much for the both of them. Yet what was about to happen, could end catastrophically, so the soldier took the first step.

She smiled, looking into the blue eyes of her captain. They stared at her, didn't push her hand away and he didn't step back. He let her hold his hand, which was strange for him. He never had been touched like this after he had been "saved" by Rogers, and he knew he wouldn't for a long time.

'Cтрастное желание (craving),' she whispered, feeling how her brain was pushing her to stop, yet her heart followed her captain into the dark abyss she knew would devour her once she had said all the words. Barnes looked at her, took the first piece of paper and some sort of pen he could find, thereby writing the word down.

'Pазрушенной (shattered),' his hand wrote the words, faster and faster as the breath of the woman quickened. She pressed her fingers so strongly against her skin that drips of blood ran down her wrist, yet she didn't care. She had to follow orders.

'Сто семь (one hundred and seven),' the words continued to fall down her lips, when randomly the hand of the captain stopped writing. He recognized that number; it was his own Infantry Regiment number from the Second World War, according to Rogers. Tough he stopped writing, she didn't stop talking.

'Cумерки (nightfall),' her veins started to burn from the pain, her body resisted those words but failed, she wasn't even halfway. And while the woman tried s desperately to get the next word out, Barnes didn't stop her. He couldn't. He ordered something; stopping her from following orders would cause a lot of distress, as the soldier always followed orders.

'Пытки (torture),' the fact that one of her trigger words was torture said a great deal about her. It told the ex HYDRA assassin, that it had happened to her, multiple times, because his fifth trigger word was furnace, a form a torture HYDRA enjoyed to use the most on him.

The woman fell to her knees, her breath became so fast she couldn't handle it anymore and she stared at her own hands, shaking and shivering like crazy, following the sound of the words as HYDRA had taught her to do. She didn't care how much it hurt her; she had to listen to her captain.

Barnes had had enough of the madness; he fell on his knees beside her and shook the woman gently, trying to wake her from her trance. But she pushed him away, her shaking hands stronger than the Russian had expected. Her brown eyes shot a glare at him, before she whispered: 'Девять (nine).'

He stood up again, writing the word down as quickly as he could. He looked behind his back, seeing the woman hold her head as if it would explode any moment. But he couldn't stop her, not even him, her captain, could hold her back, and tell her to ignore orders, because she always followed her orders.

'Bредный (deleterious),' she screamed, louder and louder as she couldn't bear the weight of the words anymore. Yet she could already see the finish line, she had to continue, she had to prove she was able to stay in control, tough she knew herself that she wasn't.

'наплыв (influx),' she shook like crazy, the words devouring her alive. She bit on her lip, to keep the energy from escaping. Blood dripped down her chin and she found herself unable to wipe it away, so she sat there, saying her trigger words, feeling how HYDRA took over her brain.

'Один (one),' Barnes stared at her again; this was the same word he had written in his book to never forget. One of the lethal ten words he so desperately tried to forget but couldn't. He wrote it down quickly, only to hear the broken screams from his soldier behind his back once more.

'You need to stop! Please!' he bagged, but he understood she wasn't going to stop. If Barnes was right, she only had one word left to say, and that one was the worst of all. The last word was the word explaining how you died. For Barnes, it was freight car, as he fell from the monster when holding his friend's shield, wishing to protect the freshly made superhero. And for her it was...

'Oгонь (flames).'

And just like that, the screaming stopped. Barnes turned around again, kneeling down, not caring that his body told him not to, not caring that his brain reminded him how dangerous she could be. Just for once, he followed his heart.

Her dull eyes stared at him, they didn't have their beautiful brown colour anymore, all the assassin could see was white pupils, white irises, nothing that hinted to her resistance for the words. She had lost the fight against HYDRA, like he had done hundreds of times.

'Soldier?' he asked, laying his hand on her shoulder. She stared at him, every muscle in her body was tightened and her emotionless face didn't flinch when his eyes filled with disbelieve. She was gone, Barnes had ordered the soldier to trigger herself, and now she was in control by HYDRA again.

'Ready to comply,' she whispered, understanding that when her captain asked in English, she must follow his lead and respond in the same language. And when every inch of the soldier Barnes saw was wiped away, the woman stood up, her eyes fixed to nothing in particular, just staring lifelessly in front of her.

Barnes then knew he made a horrible mistake, he saw how the soldier didn't even glance at him, and he realized he had awoken the monster she buried deep underneath her skin. He couldn't hold himself back from worrying, and when his words filled the room, the soldier still chose to ignore him.

'No! No, no, no, no! You are not going to lose control! I forbid you!' he said, tears filling his eyes. Not only because for some strange, forgotten reason he cared about her, but because he blamed himself for creating a monster, something had he sworn to never do again.

'Are you sure, Captain James Barnes?' her voice was emotionless too, nothing hinted that there was a human still inside, and when she called his last name, his eyes widened. No one ever called him Barnes, no one even dared to call him James, let alone James Barnes. Yet this woman did, like it was the most normal thing in the world.

'Yes I'm sure, just come back to me,' he whispered, now feeling how one small tear fell down his cheek. He wasn't going to lose her again, tough for some strange reason he didn't remember how he lost her last time. And after his red, swollen eyes met hers, she collapsed.
