We're Too Late
The Pacific Ocean
Time - Nearly Twilight - Heavy Rainstorm
The skies changed from twilight time to dark rainstorm in a matter of minutes. A continuous gust of wind began to blow strongly. As it gets stronger, the rain started pouring from above. The calm waters have changed into raging waves causing the surface to be a deadly place for anything to be around at.
Apparently, a longliner appears to be hanging around the ranging sea.
The crew along with their captain are losing their minds while furiously lifting the nets that weigh a ton from beneath the waters only to get slapped by the angry waves as the ship rocks. Other crews were busy preparing the sail and steering the ship in the right direction.
Chaos surrounds the ship and many of them on board began losing hope that they'll get back to their friends and family on land. Many material possessions owned by the people such as barrels of wine, buckets of baits, phones, clothes, weapons, and many more, fell into the ocean due to the ships' heavy rocking.
Meanwhile, underneath the waves, a portal opens up
to which the Queen of Atlantis and the son of Batman swim out of it. It didn't take them long to see the situation around them was not at peace, even though their surroundings underneath the waves are calm. As they gaze up towards the surface, they see a fisherman ship that's finding difficulty to stay still.
"Are you sure we're in the right place?" Damian asks, concerned that they might be in the wrong place.
"Yes, the trident's location has never failed before." The Queen said.
"Okay, but where is every creature?" Damian looks around the empty waters. "Aside from the ship, we're the only ones here."
"Iruka isn't."
Mera uses her powers to scan their surroundings to see if there are any signs of dolphins in the area. Behind every plant, under the rocks and sand, at the far distance...
So far, no luck.
But then, she had a hunch. She looked up to the ship and aimed her powers at it. She was shocked to find the presence of a dolphin on the ship but something wasn't right.
She started fretting but she hid it with a normal facial expression when she noticed Damian approaching her.
"Is she around here?" He asked.
"Not in the waters, no," Mera replied. "But, my powers say that she's up there."
The Queen pointed towards the rocking ship to which made Robin jaw hung open. He started panicking while digging his fingers into his hair.
"No no no!" He kept repeating. "Did they catch her?!"
"It would seem like it." The Queen fixed her eyes on the ship.
The merman wasted no time as he started swimming towards the ship with rage in his heart.
"Damian, wait!" The queen grabbed his wrist and pulled him back to deeper depths. "What are you going to do?"
"I don't know, but I have to do something!" He said as he kept trying to release his wrist from her grip.
"Damian, listen to me." She said. "I will handle this."
"You're in no position to stand on that boat but I do. Stay here, I will find her."
Damian knew it from the start that he was in no position to stand up against the fisherman on board but he ignored the truth and swam for it anyway. Thankfully Mera brought him back to his senses and took over the job.
She placed a barrier spell around him to ensure his safety if there happens to be any threat lurking nearby. The barrier helps to deflect anything that hits it and it also hides the merman in plain sight.
When she was done with him, she started heading towards the ship. On her way there, she had to be careful as she dodges the many objects that were falling from the ship.
The moment she arrived at the surface, she was immediately pushed back down into the waters by a huge wave. The waves toss her around like a ball to which it started to make her dizzy.
Through her dizziness, she gained control and used her powers to create a barrier around herself just like she did for Damian.
In the barrier, she took a moment to calm her whirling mind. Damian swam towards her to ask her condition to which she replied she was fine.
After a moment, she was ready. Together with the barrier, she swam towards the surface once again and this time, she was ready for the waves. She used her powers to gather up the waves and create a flight of water stairs, leading to the ship.
She ran as quickly as she can and landed on the ship.
The crew spotted her but they didn't know who she was. She used her powers to create yet another barrier around the ship to make it steady and firm.
"A sea witch!" One of the men yelled, catching everyone's attention.
They all came to the decision that she was the witch who caused the storm to bring death upon them. One of them picked up their spear gun and aimed towards the Queen. When he threw it, the spear was bent inches away from hitting her. It was all thanks to the barrier around her.
"I am not a witch!" She held her hands up. "I'm Mera, Queen of Atlantis!"
"Liar!" One of them yelled. "Atlantis is located in the Indian Oceans, not in the Pacifics!"
"It doesn't make sense for you to be a long way from your kingdom?!"
"I'm here because your ship has cau--
"If we catch her, the storm might stop!" Many of them carried their weapons and started running towards her. "GET HER!"
"Fine, if they won't listen to reasons." The queen mumbles as she removes the barrier around the ship and chaotic waves started invading the ship once again. The people that were running towards her were pushed back by the waves while she stands firm.
She looked around to see many of them fleeing to find a safe spot like ants taking shelter from human feet. She raises her hand and releases her powers towards a man who was holding onto the railing on the ship. Her powers surround his waist as it pulled him towards her.
"My power sensed a dolphin was captured on this ship." She said with her queen tone. "Where is she!"
"We d-didn't catc-ch any d-d-dolphin." The man said with fear in his voice causing his sentences to be questionable. "The n-net had only caught f-f-fishes."
She heard him clearly but she knew that he was lying. His tone says it all. Judging by the way he had trouble speaking straight in his sentence and how his eyes kept avoiding hers.
Her eyebrows were pulled down as they began glowing bright blue.
She stared directly into his eyes as her powers tightened around his waist, causing him to groan in pain.
"I'll ask again." She spoke. "Where. Is. The. Dolphin."
The way his hand started shaking, his eyes filled with fear due to the many threat that made him think he may lose his life made him spill out the truth. He took his eyes off the Queens and pointed towards a medium-sized storage box at the corner of the ship where they store the fishes they caught.
"Please, whatever you see in there, don't kill me." He places his hands together and begged the queen. "I have a family back home."
"I do not kill out of anger." She tells the man in her grips. "But if what you say is false, I will not hold back on you until I get the truth."
"I promise, I'm not lying." He said. "We caught one dolphin by accident in the net. We wanted to let it back into the ocean but the Captain forbids it."
"He forced us to keep it in there."
Her powers let go of his waist and her eyes return back to normal. The man steps back away from her and ran towards the railing to hold on to.
In her heart, she knew what she's about to see is not going to be pleasant... especially for Damian. She fixed her eyes on the storage box as she ran towards it.
She approached the box and stood in front of it, her hands, inches away from the top, hesitating to open, fearful of what she's about to see.
The screaming men and chaotic weather reminded the Queen that the ship wasn't a safe place to stay any longer. She took a deep breath and opened it.
What lies underneath the cover didn't shock the queen as much as she thought it would because she saw it coming before stepping foot on the ship.
A dolphin was curled up or squeezed inside the storage box with barely enough water to cover its blowhole. The Queen reached her hand on the creature's fin but there were no responses. She used both her hand to lift the creature, only to discover its body filled with water... an indication that the dolphin is dead.
There were no injuries around its body so it wasn't hunted. As the man said, they caught her by accident. Though the storage box had water, it didn't keep the dolphin alive for multiple reasons. Firstly, the box was too small with not enough space, no oxygen, the water was too little and the dolphin was enduring a tremendous amount of stress which caused her to suffocate and die in fear.
The Queen held the dolphin in her arms as she makes her way back towards the stairs made from waves. As she was walking, she started thinking of a way to tell Damian about his friend's death... or how will he take it. What will he do after this? Will his friend's death change his mind in returning back to land?
The Queen was about to jump back into the sea but she stood firm and faced the men on the ship. Her teeth clenched, her eyebrows were pulled down and her eyes glowed bright blue once again. A look which poses as a threat.
"You people are not worth saving after what you have brought upon this poor creature!" She yells loud enough for everyone to hear her. "But, I will not be the one to end your lives because it's not my place."
"May Poseidon have mercy on your people."
With her last words towards the people, she turned around and jumped back into the sea, leaving the storm to deal with the ship.
When he got underneath the raging waves, she began looking around for Robin but he was nowhere to be seen. She held the dolphin in a safe position as she dives deeper towards the seabed. As she was diving, she was relieved to see Damian taking shelter among the sea anemones.
"Damian." She called out to him as she used her powers to remove the barrier protection around him.
"Mera." He got out of the anemones. "Did you fin--
Damian lost his words the moment he laid eyes on the dolphin in her arms. His eyes were widened as if they were going to pop out at any time. He was so shocked that he froze and sank back into the anemone bush.
"Damian, I'm afraid we're too late," Mera said as she gazes down sadly on the deceased dolphin in her arms. "I'm sorry."
Damian had the strength to come out of the anemone because he was hoping that the dolphin in the Queen's arms wasn't his friend but another dolphin.
He swam towards her and carefully studied the dolphin. His heart shattered when he confirmed that it was indeed Iruka when he was spotted the small mark on the tip of her tail. Apparently, Iruka was the only dolphin he knew that had a mark on its tail... as to how she got it, he doesn't know.
"No... oh Iruka." He lay his forehead on his dead friend. "I'm sorry... so so sorry."
The merman's throat started sobbing as his chin started quivering. He took the body and wrapped his arm around it, burying his face while sobbing for it as they both sank and landed on the seabed. Given the situation, he didn't even care about the rotting smell the body was starting to release.
"Take your time, Damian," Mera said as she sat down next to them. "I'll bring us to a place where you can bury her body."
Damian lift his head and gave a good long look at his dead friend. His eyes traveled towards her eyes, only to see nothing in it. He gently stroke her skin as he started sobbing again.
"Iruka."
