Chapter 8
~~Back to 3rd Person PoV finally. Skippy Skip a couple days, tis a Friday now~~
"How are you feeling, Max?" A nurse, Kelli, asked sweetly.
"A lot better." Max chuckled when she looked over at the opened door. She had been staring out the window up until this point.
Over the course of the past few days, Max had regained strength enough to at least sit up and speak. She had also figured out a better way to breath than how she had been. Of course, it was because of the doctors work and her hatred of hospitals and wanting to get better. She had been visited by Mary multiple times, each time she pretended to be asleep or the doctors made some sort of excuse. This Mary character really made Max uncomfortable. Everyone else had come to visit multiple times. A "crisis"counselor had also visited her multiple times, though, Max didn't talk much about the situation or herself. She really didn't like being around counselors, no offense to them, she just wasn't that kind of person. When the counselor did visit, she got to play board games. Currently, Dan and Steve were at work and AJ, Mac, Ren, Henry, Rich, and Alyc were at school then were going to Henry's football game. Max felt really bad she couldn't go, though, Henry insisted many times that it was okay.
"Are you bored again?" Kelli joked and smiled sideways at her. Max nodded, Kelli frowned. "Do you want to try walking again?"
"Yeah, definitely!" Max agreed, she scooted towards the edge to stand.
"Slow down there speedy," Kelli chuckled. "I need to check with the doctor first." She reminded. Max sighed dramatically and winced with the feeling. Kelli left for a few minutes then returned with Dr. Genie.
After a few minutes of getting prepared for the walking, Max was slowly assisted into a standing position by Kelli. The gown she wore floated to its correct position in the process, though, the side was open which was quite embarrassing to her. Dr. Genie made sure to not focus on that, Kelli helped Max retie the opening so it was closed and they actually tried walking a few steps. Kelli was in front of Max and carefully holding her arms as they took a few steps forward. Dr. Genie was close by if there were any problems. After they walked around the room with assistance, Max wouldn't stop insisting on trying it herself.
"Alright, alright, but please, please be careful." Dr. Genie sighed in frustration. Max nodded and slowly released Kelli's arms. Max's arms grazed at her sides and she hesitantly took a few steps forward. "Just trust yourself." Max mentally reminded herself as she stepped towards the window. The adults kept moving closer as if they didn't trust her. Her hands fell onto the chilled windowsill. It was Autumn and the temperatures were dropping a lot faster than normal, it was getting to be an early Winter.
For a bit, Max was lost in the scenery, she was so high above the ground it was quite scary especially if there was some sort of emergency. The window's edges were frostbitten on the edges and the late afternoon was foggy. The trees were gently swaying with the light wind and the sun was in a different part of the world, just shining against the small puddles of the old fallen rain. People were bustling and moving below it captured her attention as well. She hadn't seen outside for real in a few days and this was the most interesting thing to her.
"Come on Max, you should at least sit down again." Kelli insisted as she slightly tugged her back. Max's attention turned and she followed the instructions. Very slowly, she independently made her way to the bed. She stumbled which brought in Kelli's reflex to help her stand. They made their way all the way back and Max realized she had to pee.
"Kelli, I- I gotta pee..." Max mumbled out. Kelli chuckled and smiled reassuringly at her.
"Alright, c'mon." She helped Max stand once more and they went into the connected bathroom. Kelli let Max take a leak on her own. When Max was done with all of her business, she opened the door and instantly went to get Kelli's help walking back to her bed. Quickly, Max was laying in her bed lazily. "Try to sleep, okay, Max?" Kelli insisted worriedly. Truthfully, Max hadn't really slept much since she came to the hospital. All the constant changing noises, different movement patterns, different lighting changing, body sticking, nurses or doctors coming in and out, and being alone wasn't helping. "Max?" Kelli asked. Max nodded in agreement and laid back. She was so uncomfortable, which was also part of the problem. Kelli turned the light off and closed the drapes, she closed the door and left right after.
Max was staring at the ceiling, listening to the constant heartbeat pattern. Needless to say, it was annoying her. She glared at the machine, then everything around her. Currently, she felt envious of all the people that could move freely and weren't stuck here. She glanced at the window. She wanted to go look out the window again, but moving over there would be the worst. She frowned slightly and returned to looking at the ceiling. Her eyelids were heavy, but her mind was not at peace enough to sleep. Well, maybe it was...
Her eyes slowly fell closed and her body relaxed. She was close to truly sleeping and thankfully, she did.
Within a short amount of time, maybe an hour, the door was opened and Mary was back. She was louder than ever and the nurses could not get her out. She was becoming violent, the staff was actually considering banning her from the hospital, which was very very rare here. Well, for anywhere really. Security had to be called this time, but even then, she would not leave. She woke Max up and this time, she couldn't fake being asleep.
"Max! Max, you're awake!" Mary cheered when she slammed the door shut and locked it. Max was already half way across the room by this time, though, she was pretty dizzy and her chest hurt again. She was leaning beside the chill window. "Why are you up? You should be resting." Mary instructed sternly. Max remained silent as she slipped down the wall slowly. Mary moved closer, Max moved further away.
"You're crazy, lady," Max grumbled quietly. Mary looked slightly hurt by this comment. The door handle jiggled, but the door wouldn't open. They looked at it in unison, then Mary continued to inch closer. "What the hell do you want with me?" Max hissed at her.
"I found out where you were, I wanted to meet you. I'm sorry you have to live with those disgusting males. You can come home with me, Hunny." Her hand extended. Max squirmed into the corner.
"You really are crazy." Max hissed back. Mary snarled and grumbled in frustration. "If you are my birth mother, and if you truly wanted me. Why the hell would you have put me into foster care?" Mary didn't answer, she just moved even closer. Now Max was trapped between a wall, a cart that wouldn't move, another wall, and Mary. She was stuck.
The door was fumbled open and the nurses standing there looked pissed. Kelli was the first one there and she was the one to get Mary back enough that the police (who had to be called in) could take her. The other nurses helped the police while Kelli helped Max back to the hospital bed. Mary was squirming and yelling the entire time she was being dragged out in handcuffs.
"Jesus Christ." Max muttered as she laid back. This was a much better feeling than being scrunched in a corner. Kelli started redoing the freaking out equipment.
"Are you alright? How bad does your chest hurt?" Kelli asked worriedly.
"It's not too bad, I'll live. That lady is crazy, though." Max chuckled and rested her head on the hand with the heart rate finger thing and the blood pressure cuff on it. This was a better position for her. She let the arm with the IV rest straight because bending it hurt. "How much longer will I have to stay here?" Max asked quietly. Kelli paused with the question, she gave Max a concerned look.
"At least until Monday, possibly longer if things like this keep happening." She answered, remembering the conversation she had with Dr. Genie.
"Okay." Max replied and went to staring at the ceiling. Somehow, she managed to fall asleep again, even with what just happened.
