Chapter 3
AJ was being hugged by his big brother. "It's alright, kid. Everything is okay."
"Y-yeah." AJ sighed, he felt comforted by his older brother. "Thanks... Bro..."
"Don't mention it kid. Now C'mon you have school in less than an hour." Charley joked, noogying him.
"Hey!" AJ laughed, squirming away and pushing his brother. "Yer an ars!" His Irish accent revealing itself. Charley burst into laughter.
"Yer so friggin Irish!" Charley teased. AJ face-palmed.
"I'm only half Irish! You're way more Irish than me!" AJ snickered. Charley chuckled while nodding in agreement.
"I am more Irish and I am stronger!" Charley puffed up his muscles. AJ rolled his eyes, chuckling.
"I am the stronger...est." He announced, puffing up his chest.
"Nah, kid." Charley disagreed, they began to wrestle around.
"You two are pathetic." Jazmin, Charley's fraternal twin, commented from the doorway. The boys looked up panting.
"Nah." Charley disagreed, jumping up and putting his sister in a headlock.
"Hey!" Jasmine giggled, squirming. The siblings began to struggle and squirm for a few more minutes.
"C'mon guys!" Their mom sighed. "You are supposed to be getting ready for school!" Her Irish accent dreading on. The kids smiled a wide innocent look. They squirmed free of each other.
"Okay, love you lady. Buh-bye~!" Jazmin giggled, waving.
"Just go get ready for school." Their mom laughed. You see, there were the twins, seniors, and AJ a sophomore. Their ages were different. Though, they were pretty close. Not as close as AJ was to Henry or Rich of course. He also wanted to be closer to Max, but that wasn't happening anytime soon.
AJ rushed around to get dressed; he wore and white undershirt, a green and black unbuttoned-flannel, and blue jeans. AJ pulled on the necklace his dad gave him for Christmas and his black vans. He grabbed his bag them there was honking outside.
"AJ! That's Henry's mom, hurry up!" Jazmin yelled.
"I'm coming! Chill!" AJ yelled. He ran out and grabbed the breakfast burrito from the table. "Bye Dad, bye Mom! Bye... Siblings." AJ called, running outside. "Hey, Henry." He smiled at his best friend as he took a place in the back of the car.
"Ayo!" Henry cheered excitedly. His mother grinned slyly and drove to the school. Rich was already there, he always was.
"Yo Rich!" AJ called, climbing out of the car. "Thank you!" He waved at Henry's mom. She waved and left after Henry climbed from the car.
"Hey, look. There's Max." Henry beamed. Rich chuckled.
"Bro, you already know you have no chance." He reminded. Henry shrugged.
"I so do! She just... Hasn't noticed it yet." Henry nodded to himself. AJ snickered, rolling his eyes.
"Heya Max!" AJ cheered excitedly. Max glanced over from her locker, she had a tiny smile slid across her cheeks.
"Ah, you losers again." She muttered, facing back to her random books and other random things. Mostly just fandom stuff and bands. Henry watched curiously.
"What do you do in there anyway? You have all of your books all of the time." He pointed out. Max faced him with a snide smirk and raised a brow.
"Sir, if you must know, I. Well. I mostly just stand her to avoid human contact." She replied, crossing her arms. "Though, that obviously isn't working." She closed the locker door and faced them again. She leaned against the lockers. There were small gasps of excitement outside the small group.
"There's a new student!" Kids announced loudly.
"Ooooo. New kid." Max said in an enchanted way. She grabbed Rich's hand on instinct and dragged him to follow. AJ and Henry exchanged glances and followed. "Wait..." Max muttered, somehow she recognized this student. Her hand pulled away from Rich, who looked puzzled. The newest student gasped as they looked at Max.
"Maxi!!!!" They squealed dropping everything and shoving through everyone to get to Max. Max fell back with a loud thud. She clutched the back of her head and cheek weakly.
"What the hell?" Max grumbled angrily. Ren grinned widely as she crouched down by Max. Her arms on the edges of her knees she was crouched, looking at the fallen child. "Move." She order, Ren leaned back and Max sat up, crossing her legs. "I should beat the shit out of you for that." Max whined.
"Heya." Ren winked, sticking out her tongue. This caused Max to smile, though she was slightly dizzy. Ren had longer hair, not very long barely shoulder length, but it was up in a pony tail. She had a more masculine look. She had black hair and shinning blue eyes. She wore an amused smirk that somehow complimented her peach skin. She was a rather cocky one. Her head was tilted to the side. She was wearing a cute outfit, an open hoodie, a carefully designer red t-shirt, and tight black skinny jeans. She was also wearing black boots with a slight heel. She was wearing a shoulder bag.
The bell chimed loud and annoyingly.
"Gross." Max scoffed.
"Never changing, what a loser." Ren mumbled, standing. She walked off to get her stuff. Henry offered a hand to Max. She grabbed his wrist, he grabbed hers firmly. He tugged her to stand. "Hey, Max!" Ren called, Max looked at her over Henry's shoulder. "I'll catch ya later."
"I gotta go, anyway. Later." Max agreed, freeing herself of Henry. "Later losers." She waved to her, possible friends? Well, she waved to AJ, Henry, and Rich. She rubbed her pained cheek.
"We're headed the same way?" Henry called, still confused by the few minute events earlier.
"Sure, sure." Max agreed, still strutting off and waving a bored hand. AJ jogged to catch up.
"What was that about?" He asked curiously, his hands in each pocket. He was walking calmly. Max glanced at him, raising a brow.
"Old friends?" Max shrugged. She licked the inside of her cheek, it tasted funky. Her nose scrunched.
"I mean, why did she punch you?" AJ asked angrily.
"Oh. I deserved it." Max shrugged. AJ stared at her, confused as they walked.
"How did you deserve that? How do you even know her?" Rich chimed in, now on the other side of Max. Henry was right behind her.
"Well... Let's see..." Max mumbled, her finger on her chin as she thought. "The first foster home was at five... And she lived there..." Max thought aloud.
"Foster home?" Henry asked curiously. Max waved him off.
"Well, the last day I was there, I punched Ren square in the nose and she never got to hit me back." Max shrugged. "Guess that was my fault."
"How do you even remember that?" Henry gasped in surprise.
"It was my first place." Max shrugged. "Forget about it." She muttered as they entered the crossed rooms. "So," Max called loudly, getting the teacher and a few other student's attention. "When's Banks coming back?" Everyone seemed surprised by Max's new found volume, though she had always had it just never used it.
"Not sure." Mrs. Galar answered, just as loud. Ren awkwardly walked into the next room.
"Of course." Max sighed with a tiny laugh. She walked over to Ren, who was still looking for the teacher. "Hello, Ren." Max said teasingly.
"Where's the teach?" Ren asked.
"He's out sick." Henry replied, crossing his arms from behind Max.
"Ah, a cutie." Ren snickered, glancing over Henry. He was extremely uncomfortable in this situation. He was at a loss for words, his face was lost in a brightened red. AJ snickered.
"Someone finally notices him?" Rich asked, covering his mouth while he laughed. Henry sheepishly rubbed the back of his neck. Max rolled her eyes as the other bell rang loudly.
"Alright, students take your places." Mrs. Galar called.
"We still working in partners?" AJ asked, to clarify. Mrs. Galar nodded causing everyone to take their normal seats.
"Ahh, and who might you be?" Mrs. Galar asked Ren sweetly. Ren smiled at her and offered a hand, both classes watching.
"I'm Ren." Mrs. Galar accepted the hand.
"I'm Mrs. Galar." She nodded. "Are there any open partner pairs?" A few students shoved their friends out of chairs.
"Their's one here." A small boy called. His voice was deepened, just barely out of puberty. His black hair was carefully shaved to his head. It wasn't a very appealing hair cut to Max, but that was besides the point. He was wearing black glasses that conformed to his face carefully, they were a new prescription. His skin was light and achene covered. His eye brows were bushy, but separate and his face was shaved smoothly. He was wearing a hoodie and jeans. His eyes were black, but still shimmered curiously. He was a rather interesting character.
"Ah yes, sit with Mac." Mrs. Galar announced with a smile. Ren nodded and sat across from Mac. She gave him a cocky, sly, smile. He returned it with a shy smile. Both classes were watching curiously. "Mac explain the topic to Ren."
"Yes, Ma'am," Mac muttered. He began the explanation and class went on like normal.
"So..." Max mumbled to AJ, he shrugged. "Do you even know what I was gonna say?" Max crossed her arms curiously.
"You were gonna ask about the assignment." AJ smirked while also crossing his arms.
"Nice." Max grinned back.
~~Time Skip: 3rd Period: Maths.~~
"So bored..." Max mumbled inaudibly. This was her only class away from AJ, Rich, Henry, and now Ren. Though, there were other fools in this class.
"And don't forget that there's a football game tonight!" Mr. Nash called as students ran off. He sighed softly.
Henry carefully approached Max in the hall. "Hey ya, Max..." He smiled slyly. "Will you come watch me play football tonight?" He prepared himself to start rambling and asking.
"Sure." Max shrugged.
"Please, Max? I really was hoping you would- wait." Henry was obviously puzzled. "What?" He instantly got more excited.
"I said sure." Max shrugged again.
"Are you serious!?" He bounced around. Max gave him an off smile.
"Yeah, I was pretty serious. But, I mean if you don't want me to come..." She was teasing him
"No! Come. It'll be cool!" Henry insisted. Max laughed quietly.
"I'll come, just chill," Max promised.
"Swear?" Henry asked, stopping her. Max faced him, still smiling sideways. She held out her pinky. Henry's face lit up as he intertwined them. "Good." He laughed, Max snickered and pulled away.
"Alright. Gotta go, later." Max waved, walking off. Henry slightly waved, still surprised then he ran off to his PE class. "And that's my daily good deed." Max yawned, stretching. An unfamiliar hand placed its self on Max's shoulder. She instantly smacked in away and turned defensively. "Oh," she sighed in relief. "Hey, Ren."
"Geez, you're so defensive." Ren snickered, "I saw you talking to that Henry guy. He's kinda cute." She winked hintingly. Max's eyes rolled, they continued to walk.
"So, what class are you headed to?" Max asked curiously as she took her old friend's paper. "Ay, same class. Again." They already had one class together.
"Sweet." Ren agreed, snatching back her paper. She stuffed the papers into her pocket. "Lez go." Max led the way to the classroom.
~~Later (Because I'm out of ideas) Football game~~
"So, this is the football field?" Ren asked, looking around. Max nodded in response. Ren grinned, Alyc ran over.
"Hey, Max!" She waved, slowing to a stop.
"Oh, hey Alyc. What's up?" Her hands were stuffed in her pockets, it was cold out. Thankfully, it hadn't started to rain.
"I dunno, just wanted to hang out I guess." She smiled kindly. Max gave her a small smile back. "Oh, hello. You're.. Ren right?" Alyc asked.
"The one and only," Ren smirked cockily. Alyc giggled. "Let's go get some seats." Max nodded and led the way, Alyc, and Ren following.
"Hello, ladies~!" Rich called cheerily. AJ waved with a wide grin. They took an uninvited seat by Max, Ren, and Alyc.
"U-uh, excuse me..." Mac said shyly. "M-may I s-sit here?"
"Yeah of course!" Ren smiled excitedly. Mac sat beside her. Max was sitting in the middle, Alyc on one side of her with Rich and AJ besides her and of course Ren and Mac were on the other side of her. They were seated in the second row and waiting for the game to begin.
As it progressed, Max was more confused, AJ and Rich were explaining it, Alyc was cheering excitedly, and Ren and Mac were talking off and on.
"I'm still so confused!" Max whimpered.
"Just watch, Max." Rich leaned forward and smiled at her while laughing. Max huffed and rested her chin on her hand. AJ laughed too.
It was now the second quarter. *quiet Golf-announcer voice*
"I'm boredddddddd..." Max whined, finding this game uninteresting. Rich face-palmed. Ren laughed.
"Or course you are." She grinned.
"What's that supposed to mean?!" Max's arms crossed defensively. This caused the rest of the group to laugh.
"You're always so defensive!" Alyc laughed. Max shrugged.
And now, Half Time. With these insane fools. *announcer voice*
"I'm hungry." Max whined.
"Oh my god Max, shut up!" Ren groaned. Max huffed, rolling her eyes.
"Don't the boys look nice in their uniforms?" Alyc asked slyly. Max's eyes rolled and she groaned. Ren nodded in agreement. Mac shrugged awkwardly. AJ and Rich had jogged off to see Henry.
Third Quarter
"I'm still hungry." Max mumbled. Rich groaned.
"Alright, come on. I'll get you something real quick." He shrugged. Max grinned and followed him off the bleachers, across the sidelines, and to the outdoor vending machines.
"Thank you~!" Max smiled. Rich chuckled.
"You're very strange." He stuffed a dollar into the machine, then fifty cents and got jerky.
"How am I strange?" Max asked as they walked back. She was carrying it happily. Rich shrugged.
"One minute you're bored, then you're hungry, then you're hyper, but most of the time all you are is serious. What's with you today?" He asked they climbed up the few steps. Max shrugged and took her place. Rich took his.
"Ooo jerky..." Ren's mouth watered. Max opened it and gave her a small piece.
"Want one, Mac?" She asked, offering him a bigger piece than Ren had. He nodded nervously and took it, Max gave him a kind smile. She passed AJ a small piece and Alyc a small piece. She gave Rich two small pieces as payment and ate the rest.
Fourth and Final Quarter
AJ and Rich were talking away, Alyc joined in the conversation. She was obviously trying to hit on Rich, and it was working. Ren was talking to Max, who tried to let Mac in the conversation. Though, Mac was mostly paying attention to the game.
The final 'buzz' chimed, it was game over.
"Wait, who's who?" Max asked. Ren groaned.
"We're 'Home' you idiot!" She hissed, not even looking up.
"Oh, well we won." Max shrugged.
"Awesome! First game of the season!" Rich cheered. The stands were cheering and yelling. AJ and Rich bro-hugged. They all walked to the grass area. Henry jogged over, even though he was still in his uniform. He pulled off his helmet.
"Hey, guys!" He smiled broadly. His hair was slightly damp, and now all tangled. Though, he still looked good. "How'd I do?" He asked excitedly.
"Dude you did great!" Mac called excitedly. He bounced up and down like a fan-girl. Henry's smile somehow grew. The group had started talking over one another about how great he did. Though, Max wasn't saying anything because she honestly didn't know she didn't know who was who in the game. Only the separate teams.
"You did a great job." His mother interrupted the conversation. Henry's eyes lit up.
"You came!" He hugged his mom. She laughed and hugged him back.
"I think this calls for a celebratory dinner." Henry's mom announced to the group.
"Alright!" Rich punched the air. Max was texting her parents because they were getting concerned. She only glanced up at the mention of food. Henry stood in front of her, the group watched even while talking.
"How do you think I did, Max?" He asked nervously. Max glanced up at him and smirked. She raised a hand and gave him a thumbs up.
"Ya did well." She nodded, putting her phone in her pocket. Henry beamed. Max gave in and gave him a true, genuine, smile. "Can I have food now? I'm hungry." There was a unified groan from the teenagers behind Henry. Max crossed her arms defensively and pouted.
"So am I!" Henry laughed, rubbing the back of his neck.
"Then let's go eat!" Mac insisted he was finally actually making friends.
"Make sure your parents are okay with it." Henry's mom said gently.
"My dad...s said it was fine if you're okay with it," Max answered. His mother nodded, smiling. Max gave her a small smile back.
"Mom's cool with it." Rich announced.
"Same." AJ agreed.
"My dad said I have to go home." Alyc frowned at her phone. "He's actually waiting for me. I'll see you guys later." She waved to the group. "Thank you, for the offer, though." She added kindly to Henry's mom before running off.
"Later!" Max called, cupping her hands to her mouth. Alyc turned and waved. Then she was gone. Ren stood there awkwardly, not answering if she could or not.
"What's wrong, Ren?" Mac asked cautiously.
"Nothing." Ren shook her head, smiling sweetly. "Nothing's wrong." She promised. Max raised her eyebrow, suspiciously. "My parents said it was fine." She said as she checked her phone.
"Okay, well then follow me." Henry's mom said.
"I call shotgun!" Mac yelled, surprising everyone at his volume.
"Hey! I was gonna do that!" Max whined. Everyone laughed. Maybe, maybe they all found unexpected friends after all.
