Avery was quite truly the only good thing he had going for him. So, he turned to drugs. He stopped putting in an effort with anything and anyone and shut down.

Two years after the untimely death, her uncle Vic had called her back to the Outer Banks, considering that he'd just been named Sheriff and he'd need some extra help taking care of her siblings, so she came back. And boy, was it a rude awakening.

She tried to talk to Rafe, but he just shut her out, as expected. But she was desperate. Everything in his life was falling apart more than it already had. His father was being charged with murder, his little sister was switching sides, and to make everything worse, the girl who'd torn him apart was trying to put him back together again. In true Rafe Cameron fashion, he told her to fuck off and leave him alone. It was more like a threat, really.

After Avery found out that he was on some wild goose chase of a treasure hunt, she bothered him and bothered him until he finally-begrudgingly-let her tag along. God, did she have no idea what she was walking into.
