Chapter 15

Isabelle scurried back and forth around the palace in search of her brunette vampire, when she spotted the three familiar faces of her brothers and Magnus. She dashed over to the boys panting, and after catching her breath, asked, "H-hey, guys. Have you seen Simon?"

Her golden-haired bother rubbed a calculative hand across his chin, deep in thought. "Hmm….hmm…" he mumbled as he tried to remember the last time he'd seen Simon. Isabelle had enough of Jace's humming, so she smacked her brother's arm lightly. "By the Angel, Jace! Have you seen him or not?!" Isabelle demanded frustrated.

"Uh… nope." Jace answered finally popping the 'p'. Isabelle gritted her and clenching and unclenching her fists as she counted to ten, annoyed by Jace's antics.
Seeing that his little sister was going to explode any second, Alec laid a tentative hand above his sister's fist. "H-hey, Sis, I think I saw him heading that way." Alec pointed. Isabelle lowered her fists, nodded towards the three, and then scampered off in the direction Alec had pointed her into.

* * * TIME SKIP * * *

Isabelle walked down stone paths that lead further into the garden, turning her head every time she thought she spotted Simon. Around her many different types of exotic flowers grew. Some flowers were closed, waiting for the sun to come out, while others basked in the moonlight. Moonbeams flitted from flower to flower, and though Isabelle wanted to join them, she needed to find Simon.

Where is he?

Isabelle walked past a couple of bushes and finally spotted a familiar patch of light brown, curly hair. Finally! Now I can tell him how I feel with no interruptions! /emIsabelle thought happily to herself. She held onto the folds of her dress in her hands, ran quickly around fairy-like topiary towards Simon.

"Simon, I love –" Immediately, the words died on her tongue at the sight that stood before her. Everything faded to black around her as she took in the scene, and all that was left was her. Her heart felt like it was shattering into a million pieces, the pain in her chest so great she felt as if she were dying. Isabelle's throat tightened and for while it seemed like she couldn't breathe.

Upon hearing a sound, Simon ended the kiss to see Isabelle staring at him and Clary with a blank expression on her face; her eyes bore into him, cold and lifeless. It chilled him to the bone seeing her look so… dead.

"Isabelle…" he heard Clary whisper to the said girl. Clary looked shocked and ashamed – which to Simon didn't make sense – as she stood from the bench slowly and approached Isabelle with cautiously. "I'm so sorry, Izzy. I don't know what happened!" he heard Clary explain to Isabelle what had happened with tears silently rolling down her cheeks.

Damn it! I made Clary cry, but why would Izzy care what I did? Simon asked himself. Deciding to quench his confusion, he strode over towards the two and inquired, "What's going on? Clary, I'm sorry, but I really don't understand why Izzy would care if I kissed –"

SLAP!

The sound of skin smacking skin echoed throughout the garden. Isabelle's face was shadowed by her dark black bangs, but even Clary could see how much she was hurting. Isabelle retracted her hand which still hung in the air after slapping Simon across the face. Then she did what she could only do at the moment.

Isabelle ran as if her life depended on it. She ran out of the garden save what little dignity she had left, she felt so stupid! What was wrong with her? Thinking that Simon could ever love her? All along she had been fooling herself with the idea that she had a chance, when there never was. All this time she had been getting her hopes up to high, only to come crashing down into disappointment. Her mind coming up with insults and put downs that made her cry even harder and blame herself.

As she rushed through building, patrons and guests turned to stare at the strange, dark-haired Shadowhunter, wondering what on earth had happened. Whispers and gossip began to increase and it only made Isabelle feel worse. She had to get out of here; she needed a place to escape, be alone.

The Seelie Queen who'd been watching Isabelle, making her escape gave an amused smile. She had a distinct feeling of what might having been going on, considering the way the petite girl had been staring at the vampire. She laughed haughtily; glad there was something better to entertain her.

Nathan, who had heard the gossip and spotted Isabelle, ran after her and worriedly asked, "Isabelle! What happened?!"

The Queen rolled her emerald eyes at her son's behaviour. Did he really need to get involved with whatever business the Shadowhunter girl had? She swore he was a disgrace to the faerie kingdom and her name! Nonetheless, she watched the scene that unfolded before her.

"Get away from me, Nathan! This is all you're fault! I came late and Simon…" she trailed off as a new wave of tears flowed down her face. She shoved Nathan aside, when he tried to approach her again, resulting in him falling to the floor and gasps from the guests. Isabelle continued on as if what had happened hadn't occurred and went on with running.

At this point, she'd reached the ballroom and knew the exit was close. Her eyes had been flooded with tears that she didn't notice the person in front of her , so before she stop her self she slammed into someone's back and would've been knocked over if the person hadn't caught her.

"Izzy?!" exclaimed the recognizable voice of her older brother Alec. Not long after, the voices of her other sibling, Jace – and possibly future brother-in-law? – Magnus reached her ears. "What happened?! What's wrong?! Are you hurt?!" they interrogated.

"Yes," Isabelle sobbed. "It hurts…."

"WHERE?!" they screamed in unison.

"Here…" she whimpered, pointing to the left side of her chest. They scanned the spot she pointed to, searching for a wound that wasn't there. They looked at her confused, wondering if maybe she had a little too much to drink. This made the poor girl cry even more, if that were possible, because they couldn't understand how much pain she was going through. Physically, nothing was wrong with her, but she was emotionally drained by a wound only she could see.

Seeing her cry more, the boys panicked, thinking they'd done something wrong. "What happened, Isabelle? You're scaring me!" Alec cried.

"Simon… kissed…Clary…" she explained between sobs. It was the last thing she said before she shut off completely, entering a world of her own, oblivious to everything else.

"He what?!" Alec shrieked outraged, this was not the first time Simon had done something like this to his sister! Remembering how broken she had seemed before compared to the whimpering girl she was now, Alec could see that this time was worse. He peered into her face and what scared him most was the way she looked at him. She stared straight ahead as if she couldn't see him; it was one thing to look for her to look lost in thought, but a whole other ordeal for her to look like she had give up. Alec's eyes darkened, no one was going to get away with hurting his sister, especially since he had let it go the first time.

At that same moment, Clary and Simon had joined the group. Immediately catching sight of Isabelle, Clary felt ashamed she hadn't stopped the kiss. Beside her, her curly-haired best friend was slightly annoyed Clary wouldn't explain why Isabelle had slapped him or why she had run off. He looked over at the black-haired girl being cradled by Magnus and concern washed through him. He began to approach Isabelle when Alec stepped in front of him, blocking Simon's path.

Alec narrowed his eyes at Simon his fist trembling at his side.

"Hey, I'm just checking on her. She ran off crying and I didn't know what was wrong." Simon responded, putting his hands up in surrender. Alec's body shook with anger and he shut his eyes unable to calm himself. "Wrong? What's wrong?!" Alec seethed. "You know want to know what's wrong?! My sister loves you and you're being too much of a jackass to notice!"

Simon's jaw dropped in surprise, but before he could answer Alec punched him square in the jaw, causing Simon to fall to the floor. As Simon struggled to get back up, he was knocked back down again by a kick to his rump. Simon moaned and rolled over into a sitting position, only to have Jace jab him in gut. "That's for kissing my girlfriend!"

"Oomph!" was all Simon could say as he was punched and kicked in various places, while coughed and sputtered out blood. Simon had never been good at fighting or self defense, so he allowed himself to be beat up as he brought his legs closer to his chest and lay in a fetal position.

"Jace! Stop! Stop!" Clary cried with tears streaming down her face as she pulled on her boyfriend's arm, begging for him to cease. "Alec, stop please! Isabelle, tell your brother to stop! Magnus, make them stop!" Clary pleaded desperately, throwing herself at the two boys and trying to haul them away from her friend. Isabelle's eyes filled with hatred as she stared back at Clary, but nothing was stronger than the hollow feeling she felt inside.

"…He deserves it… he deserves it…" she whispered to herself. Magnus let go of Isabelle and latched on to his dark-haired partner's arm. "Alexander, stop! You're going to kill him!" Magnus exclaimed.

"Vampires don't die, by just a few kicks." Alec deadpanned, a murderous glint in his eyes, and then he took a gun out from behind his blazer. It was silver and was most likely loaded with wooden bullets. A crowd had gathered around them, watching the scene play in front of them. Some patrons had looks of horror and disgust, while others had a hungry and blood thirsty expression.

"Alec, stop!" Isabelle shouted, finally snapping back to attention, when she realized what her brother was about to do. Alec froze upon hearing his little sister's voice; however, Alec kept his arm raised, pointing the gun at where Simon's heart would be and kept his finger on the trigger."Just… just leave it. He's…it's…better if he lives." Isabelle struggling to come up with an excuse for the brunette vampire. As much as Simon had hurt her, she didn't think he should die for it.

Yeah, but you didn't mind when they were beating him up, now were you? a voice inside her head accused.

"Shut up!" Isabelle yelled loudly and shook her head, making everyone stare at her in confusion. Her brothers and Magnus stared at her worriedly, but she dismissed them.

"…But, Sis, he hurt you." Alec said coldly, glaring back a Simon.

"Killing him won't change anything. Besides we don't kill for… reasons such as this. Let him live, at least he'll live with his mistake." Isabelle reasoned as she approached her brother slowly and placed a soothing arm on his shoulder. Alec sighed and lowered his arm, putting the gun away.

"You're lucky my sister cares this much about you." Alec stated bitingly, a warning thinly veiled beneath the statement. Alec strode off quickly, with Isabelle and Magnus trailing behind him. Clary clung onto Jace, trying to explain what had transpired between her and Simon in the garden as Jace glowered darkly at Simon as they walked away. The crowds quickly parted, making a pathway for the group as they stalked off, leaving Simon in the middle of the ballroom.

The guests looked back and forth between each other unsure of what to was still in too much of a shock after what just happened to make a move to go after his group, so he continued to lie on his back and stare at the elaborately decorated ceiling.

Above him a scene from A Midsummer Night's Dream was depicted to in colourful tiles. Simon stared at the image noticing that it was the part of the play where the couples kept falling in love with the wrong person. Simon chuckled darkly; it was such a fitting image for what had just gone down moments ago.

Too bad I can't blame this on a magic potion or a fairy prankster...
