Chapter Three: Second Chance
Behold, the first actual change in the plot.
-------
Four years ago
Twelve year old Romano stared down at the ground. Most twelve year old boys would be worrying about stuff like cooties and social standings. They didn't worry about what Romano worried about. They didn't worry about being sent to jail or not.
"We've come to a decision," the judge spoke. "Young Mr. Vargas is to go to juvenal detention, unless someone wants to take the challenge of taking this boy in and turning him around."
"I'll do it!" Antonio Carriedo spoke, quickly rising from his seat.
Romano's mouth hung open slightly. The green eyes boy wasn't the only shocked one. Everyone in the court room turned and faced the Spaniard.
"I mean it," Antonio said. He walked over to Romano, scooping the boy into his arms like he weighed nothing.
Romano didn't know what it was. But he really liked this person. He also didn't like all attention on him. He clutched Antonio's shirt in his small hands, hiding his face in the mans chest. This surprised Antonio, but despite the shock, he rubbed Romano's back soothingly, trying to calm the boy down.
For the first time in a while, Romano felt loved and cared for.
"You sure?" Someone spoke up. "You already have two children to take care of."
"I'm sure." Antonio confirmed.
