Somniphobia
Jungkook's POV-
We ended up having to make quite a few stops before we could finally go back to the apartment.
Tae filled me in on what's been going on at school, his new job.
(It turns out that guy who came and visited me at the hospital was his boss? He didn't give me much information on him. Didn't tell me why he came to see me or why he was so mean to me, but I'm sure he'll feel me in later. Hopefully.)
He told me more about Hoseok as well as Chanyeol and what Jimin has been up to.
He told me about the four of them going on a weekend trip with his cousin Jin and Jin's boyfriend for Christmas.
It sounded like they had a blast, but hearing the stories, hearing how much fun they all had together as well as how Tae wishes I could have been there with them made me sad because I would have loved to have been there.
I love Christmas.
Thinking about missing that got me thinking about all of the other stuff I've missed. My mood kind of soured after that so I didn't feel like talking much.
Tae had been on his phone for most of the ride up to the apartment in the elevator anyway so I wouldn't have been able to carry on much longer about missing the holiday anyway, but I didn't mind. I was just so happy to be with him. I missed this. I missed our life.
When we got to the apartment he quickly unlocked the door. Before he actually opened it to let us both inside though, he turned to face me.
"I need to go do something real quick, can you wait here? Please? I'll only be a minute."
"O-okay?" I murmur questioningly.
He slowly takes my bag out of my hands, cracks the door open just enough for him to fit through and slips into the apartment.
After the door closes I rock on my heels, looking around the hall as I wait.
I remember this place. Remember the building, the businesses, restaurants and additional apartment buildings around it. What I didn't remember is how ugly the wall color is out here.
Too bright. Too white. Too sterile and clean looking. It reminds me of the walls at the hospital.
As I look down to my feet, ready to critique the flooring, I hear the door open.
The sound of faint jazz music drifts out of the apartment as Tae appears wearing a Santa hat on his head with his big, bright smile on full display.
"What's going on?" I giggle.
He doesn't say anything, instead he opens the door fully, reaching for my hand.
With my hand held tightly in his he guides me through the entryway.
As we walk further into the apartment I see that the whole place is decorated with tinsel, twinkling lights as well as garlands of greenery and holly.
As the dining table comes into view I see that it is has plates of cookies, all decorated with colorful frosting, cut into the shapes of stars, trees, even some gingerbread men, all on Santa plates.
Christmas cookies.
After I realize that I make the connection that the music I hear playing isn't just Jazz music, but Christmas music.
My eyes start to tear up as I turn to Tae. "What- How did- When did you-"
I can't seem to form the words to begin to ask him how he had time to do all of this, let alone thank him for being so thoughtful. When did he do this? This must have taken forever!
He continues to smile, eyes glittering with tears as well. He pulls me around the corner so the living room comes more fully into view and that is when I really break down.
Stood in the corner, decorated in shining lights and ornaments of red and white with candy canes and tinsel, is possibly the most beautiful Christmas Tree I've ever seen.
I turn my attention again to Tae just as he leans in to place a kiss on my cheek.
"Merry Christmas Koo," he says as he pulls away.
I wrap my arms around him in a tight hug, resting my chin on his shoulder as I continue to marvel at the beautiful tree over his shoulder.
"Thank you." I bring my face in front of his to look into his eyes "Everything is gorgeous. I love it and I love you. Thank you."
"I'm so glad you like it Koo," he says gently, placing a light kiss on my forehead.
Holding hands we walk closer to the tree so I can get a better look at the ornaments and decorations. It isn't until I get within a meter or so of it that I begin to recognize some of the ornaments.
They are the handmade ones I made in grade school for my mother!
I turn to Tae with a puzzled look and before I even voice the question, he answers it.
"I had to borrow a few decorations from her," he smiles.
I nod, returning the smile before I turn back to continue admiring. I start to pick out the various homemade ornaments one at a time as I look over the tree.
I see the popsicle Christmas tree from grade three, two clear glass ornament with painted winter scenes around the outside from grade four and five, as well as a few small picture frames (also made out of popsicle sticks) with my school picture in them from grade one through five.
"This is so amazing!" I beam, admiring my lovely bowl cut from one of the pictures.
"I miss baby coconut-head Koo," Tae teases as he crouches down next to me, looking at the same picture I have my eyes on.
"Shut up!" I giggle.
My gaze drifts further down towards the bottom, only now noticing that there are a few presents wrapped and neatly tucked underneath.
Tae must've followed my gaze to the presents before he says in a gentle voice, "Those are for you, but there is one more that couldn't be wrapped."
I widen my eyes when he says this, excited to find out what it is. Just as I'm about to ask what he means I hear a sweet voice from behind us.
"Merry Christmas Bunny."
Taehyung's POV-
I don't think I've ever seen Koo cry so much. I bet he lost about half his body weight in water from all the tears he has shed tonight alone.
When he turned around and saw his mother standing behind him he dropped into a deep bow on the floor and began sobbing.
Before tonight he had only been able to talk to her over the phone as she has been traveling to different parts of the country in order to get help with outing Irene.
Of course, he doesn't know about the investigating Irene part.
He doesn't even seem to remember who Irene is, thank God.
That is about the only thing we're glad he doesn't remember; her or anything to do with her, including everything that happened the day of the attack.
It's going to be devastating when he does, but for now we are going to prolong the good memories. His naivety.
We talked all night long and ate Christmas cookies until we were sick. We laughed as we talked about memories from our childhood, accidentally confessed to a few schemes Mrs. Jeon didn't previously know about– all of which she found hilarious, admitting that she actually knew of some of them, informing us that we weren't nearly as sneaky as we thought we were– as well as talking about just a few more light hearted things Koo missed while he was in the hospital.
We talked about some things but we made sure not to bring up his time living with Yoongi. Or Yoongi in general.
Mrs. Jeon is aware that he has gotten his memories with Yoongi confused as memories with me and did well steering the conversation away from him.
We also made sure to be delicate when it came to Jin and Namjoon. I don't know how, maybe because what happened with them was so traumatic, but he doesn't seem to remember either of those two at all. Because of that, we didn't talk to in depth about them either.
We're concerned that if Koo thinks too hard about the past he will have another episode with his headaches and I for one know that I am not going to allow him to be in so much pain again if I can help it.
After a few hours Koo said that he was exhausted so after some cuddles from me, a few hushed lullabies as well, he was able to fall asleep.
I'm glad he was so tired today but I know everyday isn't going to be as smooth as today was. That thought is troubling to me.
Evenings are going to be hard adjustment for us because of the anxiety he feels when it starts getting dark. When he starts to get tired and knows he needs to go to sleep.
It makes him so nervous that he starts to look for things to do to keep him active and busy so he won't fall asleep.
So really, he doesn't sleep unless he is physically unable to stay awake and thankfully today he was exhausted not from seizures or anxiety but for a good reason. Because he had fun, smiling and laughing with his mother and I.
Shortly after he fell asleep I texted everyone to see who might be able to meet up.
They should be here in twenty or so minutes.
Since my talk with Yoongi he has been a lot more inquisitive with myself and Chanyeol regarding what our theories are about the night he found Koo, along with what we have found to support those theories.
Normally he would not be included in these meetings between the five of us (Jimin, Hoseok, Chanyeol, Mrs. Jeon, usually over the phone, and myself) but he asked if he could come the next time we all met.
It especially worked out because what better time for him to get some sense knocked into him about his psycho, murderous girlfriend then while Mrs. Jeon is here to do it in person.
You would have thought it really was Christmas when I told her Yoongi would be coming. She says she has a few things he needs to hear and she is giddy to be able to deliver them to him in person.
Slowly everyone starts to filter in, Chanyeol being first then Chim and Hoseok then, ironically, the person that lives the closest was the last to show, Yoongi.
I blame Irene. Since the two have been living together I'm sure he had to either sneak out or lie about where he was going.
When we are all situated in the living room I rub my palms over the tops of my jeans, my palms feeling clammy. I feel anxious, I'm not sure why. Maybe because we're kind of on the clock here.
"Okay, we'd better get started," I glance down at my watch. "He has an alarm set to go off every two hours to wake him up. We only have seventy minutes and we are all talkers so, let's get started. We have a lot to go over and recap with Yoongi. So-"
"I'm sorry, but what did you say about an alarm?" Hoseok asks.
"He has developed a sleep phobia. Doctor Yang told us his behavior was align with those individuals who have Somniphobia," I inform, drawing out the words. "When he gets tired and knows he is going to fall asleep, or when he feels the need to fall asleep, he gets very stressed. In some cases even inconsolable. In those instances, he doesn't allow me to leave his side...
"He avoids falling asleep for as long as he can because he is petrified of not waking up again. One of the ways he is coping with this fear is to wake up every two hours," I voice before Mrs. Jeon expands on what I've said.
"When his seizures started he was put on a medication that was to be taken every two hours so the night nurses would wake him up at the appropriate times to give him the medication.
"Bunny found it comforting to be woken up so as to not fall into too deep of sleep. When he no longer needed that medicine he continued to set alarms for two hour intervals during the night and has done so since," she explains.
The room is silent for a minute before someone breaks it.
"I can't even begin to imagine what he's gone through..." Chim says as he wipes a single tear from his cheeks and leans against Hoseok's shoulder next to him.
"Yes... It's been very hard for him. It's even worse that he didn't choose this for himself, but that's why we are here. To prove that he didn't choose this. Alright, Chim and Hoseok what have you been able to find?"
Chim takes the opportunity to fill Yoongi in on what's been going on with he and Hoseok.
Chim is becoming a rising star on campus for his dancing skills as well as for his relationship status with the amazing choreographer and performer J-Hope.
Hoseok has started doing something he has never really done before which is accepting offers to work with idol trainees not only within their current company but with others as well.
The plan was that he, by accepting the offers, would be brought in by other entertainment companies to do dance workshops and classes to work with their trainees for short terms.
Companies tend to do this often with their trainees. They bring in choreographers and instructors from different skill sets so that the trainees can gain as much knowledge and skills for their eventual debut as they can get access to.
Over the last few months there were a few times when he got to work side by side with entertainment directors and instructors from other companies.
One of the main ones he gets requests from, the one he makes sure to always say yes to, has been Irene's, which was our intention with the whole thing so it's thrilling that it's worked out.
One day between some lessons Chim was at the company to be a guest instructor in he noticed a tall, broad shouldered man briefly as he walked out of one of the recording studios and into a conference rooms.
He was only seen for about fifteen seconds as he crossed the hallway but Chim noticed him and asked one of the instructors who the guy was as he didn't look like an idol and he didn't recognize him as any of the security he'd seen around the building.
He was told by the trainee that no one really knew what he did but that the man came to visit Irene sometimes.
We have all talked extensively about Hyuk, the man we think helps Irene, and Chim thought this could be him.
We have been obsessing over finding Hyuk so he was so excited to have possibly spotted him.
He tried to hang around the hallway for as long as he could before it got too suspicious, him hanging around the conference room, in hopes to get a picture or something but people started to notice him and he didn't get anything.
Ever since that day Chim as well as Hoseok have tried to keep an eye out for a guy that looked suspicious, but no such luck. Unfortunately today the two have nothing new to report.
I glance at Chanyeol as I continue.
"Chanyeol, would you like to go next?"
Chanyeol nods then proceeds to give a breakdown of what he's been trying to do with his reverse hacking, or more like reverse engineering, the methods her investigator– or investigators– uses in order to attempt to see where the computers are located that the searched data is being sent back to.
We are hoping that if we could do this successfully we could get an IP address or a general GPS location for the computer, but Chanyeol has had little to no success so far.
He and I have been hoping to track down this fucking Hyuk guy specifically with this method but it doesn't sound like he is any closer than Chim and Hoseok are.
"Nothing on Hyuk then," I state, disheartened yet again.
"Nothing ye-"
"His name is Jung Hyuk," Mrs. Jeon states then.
We all spin in our seats, looking to where she has been sat quietly listening to the progress reports.
We all stare at her for only a few seconds of silence before Yoongi, Chanyeol and myself start asking our questions all at once.
"-How do you know that?"
"-How do we get in touch with him?"
"-Do you think he'll talk?"
"It's a long story," she stands up. "I'll share some of it with you, but first," she turns to me, "Tae, his alarm is going to go off in twenty minutes. Do you want to go check on him and maybe wake him up? It's close enough to the time. I don't think he'll mind if he wakes up a bit early. Especially not if it's you that wakes him."
I nod, "That's a good ide-"
I am stopped mid-thought when a distressed yell is heard from the master bedroom.
"TAE!?!"
