Break

Chanyeol's POV-

"Hyuk, or whatever the hell we are calling you now, this is impossible to do in one night. At the very least, impossible to do without missing anything. Think about it." I gesture for Yoongi to hand me the marker next to him on the desk.

Once I have it in my hand I grab the small notebook by the keyboard, thumbing through to a blank page as I begin to write.

"When Irene started as a trainee she had singing lessons with Jinyoung six times per week, not three or four like she did over the last few years." I write the numbers down to total the hours together. "They are two hour sessions and that went on for two years. That's around forty eight hours, give or take, of lessons per month."

"And twelve hours per week..." I hear Yoongi mumble beside me.

"You have what, five missing person's cases and three dates a piece?" I asks as I glance up at Hyuk from the paper.

"Five names, but one of the names has four significant dates. So sixteen dates total. I've already done the math, Chanyeol. We will need to listen to a minimum of four hours of audio minute by minute for each name on the corresponding dates."

I scoff at his much too casual tone. "Hyuk, there are five of us. We have less than twelve hours to listen to all of these and mark or write down time stamps for whatever we find that is of use to go with the documentation in each one. This isn't enough time."

"And we aren't even sure exactly what we're looking for." Yoongi says as he rests his palms flat on the desk to lean against it.

"He had six profiles, but one I completed. I will show you what we are looking for, but first you all need to see this." Hi calls from the sofa she is sat on, sounding very anxious.

She places the laptop she had rested on her knees onto the coffee table in front of her as General Kang, Hyuk, Mrs Jeon, Yoongi and myself make our way to her.

Before I take a seat next to her I don't fail to notice the almost sea sick expression on her face. It isn't until I see the computer screen that I understand what is making her so nauseous.

Holding a press conference outside of the police station in Seoul is Irene with two other individuals at her sides.

On her left stands a small, doe eyed little girl and to her right is a petite women with shoulder length hair and dark sunglasses to cover eyes that I'm sure mirror the same sorrow as the little girl's. This must be Jinyoung's family.

Mrs Jeon lets out a sob when she sees the screen before she turns her back to the monitor, covering her mouth in attempt to stifle her loud wailing.

General Kang, who is stood beside her, pulls her into a hug as Hyuk asks Hi if she will turn up the volume from where he stands behind me.

Once she has the volume turned up the three of us on the couch lean towards the monitor, wanting to be sure not to miss a word that is said.

"I was heartbroken when I got the news of my dear friend and mentor's passing." Irene says while dabbing her eyes with her white handkerchief.

"But the loss I feel is nothing compared to the loss his family feels. The loss of a loving parent that his daughter and son will have to feel for the rest of their lives, as well as the loss his beautiful wife will feel not having her best friend and partner in life by her side. I can't-" She cuts herself off as she lets out an exaggerated series of sobs.

Feeling bad for hysterical Irene, Jinyoung's wife takes a step closer to her, hooks her arm with Irene's as she takes Irene's hand in both of hers.

The widow of the man you killed comforting you while you tell the world how much you will miss him. Fucking witch.

"As you may have heard, the police have yet to find any leads to point them in the direction of the assailants of this horrendous act. So, I would like to put up a reward of five hundred million won for whoever comes forward with information that will aid in the capture and conviction of his attackers..."

"Five hundred million..." Hi repeats in surprise.

"She could put up a billion won if she wanted, she isn't going to have to pay anyone for helping to capture the attacker when the attacker is herself. If anyone comes forward with any useful information for the police she will just silence them too." Yoongi says unemotionally.

Every time he speaks I get more worried. The more aloof he becomes the more his anger is worsening. He's about to explode.

I keep my eyes on him for a moment longer before I turn my attention back to the screen.

"We will not rest until we get justice for this great man who not only bettered the lives of all those that were blessed to know him, but who has also done so much to contribute to the music industry through his students.

"Jinyoung was truly one of my most trusted confidantes and friends. Not a minute will pass that I don't miss him, but I know he is in a better place and he will be watching over us. I pray that I can continue to flourish with my music and make him proud of me....."

She continues to say whatever other bullshit tribute to her 'friend' she has prepared while the three of us lean away from the monitor simultaneously, Yoongi and I now both mirroring the look of disgust and nausea that Hi had when we first sat down.

We can't hear any more of this. It's sickening.

"This is fucking crazy. She is crazy!" I groan as I run my hands over my face.

When I hear Yoongi take in a sharp breath before exhaling I turn to see him stand up, step around the table to walk across the room with one hand in his pocket while the other rubs the back of his neck.

I watch as he walks all the way to the opposite side of the room and stands in front of the windows, back facing us.

To anyone else he probably looks annoyed at most, maybe with a little bit of shock mixed in, but I know my friend. He looks calm on the surface but there is a storm of emotions raging inside of him. He is about to combust.

I could see it when he was talking to Mrs Jeon in a seemingly calm tone and I can see it has worsened since seeing Irene. I need to get him out of this room before he self destructs.

I quickly turn around to look back at Hyuk. "I know we need to start on the audio, but he needs to get out of here. Just give us ten minutes."

"We really need to get started on this." He answers back curtly.

"Trust me, all I can think about is how much we have to do and the limited time we have to do it," I say as I stand up from the couch. "But he is about to lose his mind and I need to get him out of here.

"This is a lot to take in, for all of us, but for how badly we feel he feels one hundred times worse. I guarantee it. I know him and he is blaming himself for all of this. We just- let us take a break. Please."

...

"I feel like I did this. If I hadn't met Kook he would have never been put into her path. She would have no idea he even existed. He would be with Taehyung and he would be happy. They would both be happy..."

I sit quietly as I listen to Yoongi beat himself up for everything that's happened. I can offer him little assurance (I try to but nothing I say makes him feel better) and it breaks my heart. All I can do is listen and be here for him.

We are both seated on the floor, backs leaning against the wall behind us a few hallways over from where the General's office is.

We would have gone further away, but I knew it should just be the two of us and any further would have required a navigator to lead us through this maze of a place.

Hyuk was hesitant to let us go and I promised him ten minutes is all we would need, but now I'm not so sure. The longer I sit with Yoongi and hear the things he has on his mind the more I think he shouldn't go back in there at all.

His heart is too heavy with guilt and sadness. I think he just needs to go be with Jungkook and Taehyung. The three of them can comfort each other.

"Yoongs, I think you need to get some rest. Let me go get Hi and she can take you to Jungkook's room."

"Absolutely not," he says quickly as he lifts his head off of my shoulder to look at me. "We have too much to do. It was going to be a lot to do with five people, but it will be impossible with four."

His lip begins to tremble as he adds, "Besides, Kook needs to focus on Taehyung right now. He needs him."

He isn't going to listen to me if I tell him that he needs Jungkook too. Also that Tae obviously doesn't see him as much of a burden if he sat with him for as long as he did today.

I'll have to go with a different approach to convince him to go. It may hurt his feelings, but he needs a break from this.

"Yoongs, you are going to be more of a liability than you will be helpful. You have too much on your mind. You are in no condition to be able to sit for hours and listen as closely as you need to in order to hear if anything of use has been recorded."

"Please don't treat me like some emotional wreck, Yeol. I'm perfectly fine. I can do this. I need to do this."

I sigh as he holds my gaze. He has that same determined look in his eyes Jungkook gets. These two really are too damn stubborn for their own good.

I look down at my watch and see that it's been about six minutes. I look back up to meet his eyes and let out another sigh as I nod.

"Alright. But you won't be able to hide how you feel from me, Yoongs. As soon as I see that you're breaking I'm getting you out of there. Even if I have to throw you over my shoulder and carry you out." I smile gently.

I see his eyes tear up before he nods and drops his head back onto my shoulder. "Thank you."

Silence falls over us for short while before he asks how much time we have left.

"Two minutes." I answer, looking down at my watch before leaning my cheek onto his head. When I feel his hair start to tickle my nose I pull away with a chuckle.

"I don't think I ever asked you if Jungkook liked your hair."

He begins to laugh lowly and the reaction is unexpected but definitely welcome.

He looks up at me with a small smirk on his lips. "Worked like a charm."

I wrinkle my nose in mock disgust. "Gross."

He laughs a little louder now and I laugh along with him but, as per usual, the moment is short lived.

A soldier appears at the end of the hall to cut out somewhat lighthearted moment short.

"They need you back in the room. Now."

"What's happened?" Yoongi asks as he quickly gets to his feet as I do the same.

"They got a call from someone. She said she found a phone." The soldier answers back.

"A phone?" I ask as we rush to follow the soldier.

When I hear Yoongi let out a small gasp I look over at me.

"Tae asked if they had found his personal phone and Hi said she wasn't sure. They must have found it." He says anxiously.

As soon as the door is opened we see General Kang, Mrs Jeon and Hi huddled around Hyuk as he sits in the General's seat at the desk with his phone to his ear.

I am about to ask what has happened when Hi puts her finger to her lips, signaling us to be quiet as she waves us over.

Once the two of us are stood at her side she leans in closer to fill us in on what's happened.

"His contact was still at the room. The police were evacuating the building but she stayed and waited for who Yonjun had sent from the police department to meet her there. It sounds like it was a total shit show.

"She had to hold the door as a few people tried to get in but finally the officer, along with two others, arrived at the room and helped get Irene's people away. Once they got them chased off, them running away to get reinforcements, our people had to hurry.

"They got pictures, took some blood samples and searched the room. During the search they found the phone under the bookshelf in the corner. They found it!"

"Okay, now what?" Yoongi asks. "What will they do with it."

"They are going to turn it into the police anonymously." She answers before she moves to turn back to Hyuk.

"No!" Yoongi exclaims. "Don't do anything until we talk to Taehyung."

"Hold on for just a moment." Hyuk says into his phone before looking at Yoongi. "Why do we need to talk to Taehyung?"

"He is the one that told me to ask if it had been found. He didn't just ask that out of nowhere. Don't do anything with it until we talk to him."

He narrows his eyes at us. Why is he so slow to react today?

He's hesitating about every decision except promising the fucking District Attorney that we will do forty hours worth of work in twelve.

"You know as well as we do that Taehyung does not do or say anything without a reason. This isn't a new concept. If he asked if it was found it's because it being located is important." I say as I take a step away from the desk.

"Let us go talk to him before you do anything." Yoongi speaks up anxiously as he takes a step back as well so that we are now both ready to basically sprint out the door.

"Do you know your way around yet?" Hi asks the two of us.

We both shake our heads.

"Okay, let's go." She says as she walks around the desk as well as the two of us towards the door.

"Someone call the District Attorney to tell him we'll need more time." She calls over her shoulder before opening the door to exit the room, Yoongi and I close behind.
