Chapter 9
Kinda special sorta extra long chapter! X3
-----
Weeks had passed and when Kari fluttered her eyes open the next day she looked around and yawned. She changed clothes and went out of her room while adjusting her ponytail. She decided not to wear her cap today nor her goggles since she thought it would be a nice change. Kari looked around and quickly saw a centurion go flying by her as if flung by something. This startled the girl as she just stared with wide eyes. Moments later Kari shook her head and got ready to attack whoever or whatever was attacking Skyworld. She readied her claws as she ran to the main part of Skyworld only to see non other than the young god, son of Hades and Medusa, Serpendes. He was holding a scythe with a black handle and a venom purple underworld insignia on the shining silver blade that was covered in the blood of the centurions that confronted him. Kari shivered in shock then looked down slightly as she growled, gritting her teeth. That was when she dashed at the young god with a loud yell.
"SERPENDES!!!!!!" Kari called out in anger as she got ready to strike him. But as Serpendes turned his face was different. He looked like-- "Allen?" Kari whispered and skid to a stop. "Allen?" Kari repeated then she felt tear stream down her cheeks. "I-I thought you---" Just as Kari spoke she felt something shake her body and the ground beneath her began to crumble and then she began to fall into a black abyss as she woke up.
"Kari? Kari?? Kari wake up!" A voice called. It was Pit. He had heard Kari whining in sadness in her sleep. "A-are you ok? You're not hurt are you?" The angel asked with a worried expression. Kari nodded and gave a bitter smile.
"I'm ok... Just a bad dream... Again..." Kari muttered and Pit sat on the edge of Kari's bed. "Is Palutena still in the library?" Kari asked and Pit nodded with a sigh. Kari blinked and slowly lowered her gaze to her feet as she pulled her knees to her chest and held them close in a tight hug. "Has she ever left the library?" Kari asked in a low tone, not looking at Pit.
"No... Lady Palutena seems really determined to find out whatever she needs to know." Pit sighed then looked at Kari as her gaze seemed to gloss over with bitterness. "H-hey. Lets go. We need to train, remember." Pit said in a forced cheerful tone, trying to lighten the mood. Kari looked to the angel as he stood up with a big smile. She nodded and then sighed. Pit left the room so Kari could change in to her usual attire. As the teen did this she remembered things. Things she never wanted to remember. Things of her past that seemed irrelevant to her current situation.
----- Flashback when Kari was five -----
It was a nice warm summer day, a soft breeze covered the area and messed with young Kari's long white hair that was down to her ankles. She was all messy and sitting on the ground while playing with her action figures giggling happily. Her face was smudged and the ground around her was all muddy, getting her baggy blue jean pant all dirty as well as her sky blue t shirt. She wore no shoes or gloves, showing her symbols innocently. Some of the on looking girls bickered with one another and stared at Kari. They soon saw that Kari had looked up with curious eyes and had begun to stare at them with a tilted head.
"Wha-chu lookin at?" Kari asked innocently and the girls took a step back in shock then ran away screaming. Kari blinked then shrugged it off and began playing. "Boom! Bam! Kaboom!! Woosh! Oh no, we're surrounded! What're we gonna do?" Kari giggled happily and soon heard a chuckle from behind her.
"You having fun there kid?" Kari jolted to her feet and rushed out of her mud puddle and turned to face the owner of the voice. It was a thirteen year old boy with long dark ginger hair that spiked out slightly and glittering emerald green eyes. He wore a chain and dog tag with the japanese kanji for "fire" engraved in it, a black t shirt with a golden fire shape in the center that seemed to be cut diagonally from top left to bottom right, blue jean shorts that were slightly below his knees, and flaming red slip on shoes. Kari blinked then gave a big smile to the boy and nodded.
"Yeh! I'm havin fun!" Kari giggled happily then took a few steps towards the boy. The teen smiled at the young Kari. "Wanna play wit' me?" Kari asked kindly as she held out one of her action figures to him. The boy blinked then shrugged and nodded.
"Sure. I have nothing else to do." He chuckled and sat in the mud with Kari and played with her. Eventually the two had to go home. "So, where are your parents?"
"Wazzat?" Kari asked while looking up at the now startled boy. "Oh, I'm Kari. Kari Himura. Who're you?"
"Oh, I'm Allen Thompson. Nice to meet you. Would you like me to walk you home?" He asked kindly and Kari gasped in excitement and nodded quickly.
"Yes please!" She called and pointed the way to her home. It was a hole in an old tree. It was not very big but it was big enough for Kari to fit in. Allen frowned and sighed.
"Why do you live here?" He asked in a bitter tone, as if knowing the answer.
"I've always lived here." Kari replied and then climbed the tree happily and waved Allen off. The teen boy walked off and entered a cave not too far away and curled up and fell asleep. When Allen woke up a few weeks later he grabbed some food and went to Kari's tree. He knocked the trunk of the tree and heard a yawn then saw Kari's head peek out from above him with a tired expression.
"Allen?" She yawned and Allen smiled with a nod.
"Yeah. I thought we could hang out again today." He said with a shrug and Kari widened her eyes and hopped out of the tree, still in her cloths. Allen blinked and sighed then picked Kari up and carried her to a creek and told her to wash up while he went to get some things. Kari did so, still in her clothes as she washed. When Allen returned he was carrying a black backpack. Kari turned to Allen upon hearing him and trotted up to him. Allen blinked, slightly shocked at Kari's willingness to hang out with him since they had only known each other for about a week, but then again Kari was young so she must be very happy. But he smiled back and then led the way to a small store. They entered and a worker behind the front desk looked up and waved at Allen happily.
"Hey Allen, you're early for work. How was your time off?" The blond haired lady smiled happily then looked at Kari. "And who might you be?" She asked kindly and Kari blinked and then hid behind Allen shyly. This confused the boy since she did not act that way with him when they first met.
"It was good. She's Kari. A... Close friend." Allen smiled happily then gave Kari a reassuring nudge and the five year old came out and timidly waved then followed Allen around like a lost kitten as he worked. Once it was time to go home Allen decided to have Kari stay with him since it was much bigger so she could move around the place more.
"Whoa!!" Kari gasped upon seeing Allen's cave. She rushed around and looked at of the items he had all over the place. Allen chuckled then nudged Kari's side and pointed to a mat across from a red one.
"That's your mat."
"Mat?" Kari asked and looked up at Allen with a confused expression. The teen nodded and smiled as he explained.
"That's where you'll be sleeping." As Allen spoke Kari widened her eyes in shock and happiness.
"Yay! I've never had a mat before! Wow! It's so soft! Allen, check it out!! Oh boy!!" Kari giggled happily and jumped up and down like a kid in a candy store. This made the boy feel good, seeing Kari with a big toothy smile plastered onto her face and jumping around like this made him laugh.
"Ok kid, time to sleep. It's getting late." He said and Kari whined but eventually curled up on her mat and drifted to sleep.
Two years passed and Kari had grown close to Allen. The two became siblings in a way, almost always together. Allen had taught Kari many things and helped her understand. He practically raised Kari. The two were walking home on this rainy night from a shopping trip since they were low on food.
"You get the fish ramen?" Kari asked childishly as she looked at Allen with wide eyes. Allen nodded with a chuckle and a smirk.
"Yes, Kari, I got the fish ramen." He reassured and Kari jumped up with a giggle. Allen sighed contently at Kari as he looked down to his bags. He knew what today was and really wanted to get home. Today was Kari's seventh birthday. Allen smiled at the gifts he got the girl, happy with his choices since he was unable to get her anything for her sixth birthday.
"Hey! It's the freak!" Called a voice from behind the two and a click sounded. Allen turned his head with a fearful expression on his face.
"Make it quick so she can't get away!" Called another voice. A bang sounded and Allen gulped then quickly shoved Kari out of the way as he jumped back slightly. The bullet whizzed by them, cutting Kari's hair in the process. Kari's hair was now a little below her shoulders and looked a little weird. Allen growled and grabbed Kari under his right arm and rushed into an alley way quickly.
"Allen, what's---"
"Shh... Stay quiet." Allen whispered and then put Kari behind a dumpster. "Stay hidden and stay quiet. I'll be back soon." Allen said and Kari shook her head rapidly and she grabbed his leg.
"Nuh-uh." She grumbled in defyance and Allen sighed then pried Kari off of him and put her back behind the dumpster.
"Fine. Then after I leave go back home." Allen ordered then raced away as fast as he could, holding a pillow close to his chest to fool the people going after Kari. Soon he was being chased and Kari was able to flee.
But she did not rush home like Allen said and instead she followed behind slowly, keeping her distance. Soon a few shots were fired and Allen was hit in the left leg and right shoulder. The teen let out a yelp as he fell down. Kari gasped then screamed as she ran up and tripped over her own feet as she arrived next to Allen. Allen blinked in shock when he heard Kari.
"Kari what are you doing?! I told you to go home!! GO HOME!" Allen ordered as he stood up and shielded Kari. The seven year old just whined and whimpered and sniffled, unable to find the words to speak.
"Why do you protect that freak?!" The man holding the gun growled as he glared at Allen.
"Because... It's my job." Allen replied with a smirk then glanced at Kari. "Kari. In that bag there are a few things in there that need to be taken home. Please, take those home now." He said, knowing Kari would listen since it was most likely food. The girl nodded and wiped her face then grabbed the bag and rushed home. The man growled as Allen stood between him and his target.
"You little son of a---"
"Shut it, there's a seven year old still within ear shot." Allen smirked and glanced over at Kari as she was now out of sight. At this point the man was pissed off so he shot Allen since he was the cause of all of this. Allen let out a groan as he once again fell on the ground. The man then came up and shot Allen until the teen was dead. As he died Allen smiled kindly at the dark sky as sirens filled the area as well as screams and gasps.
"I'm.. So... Sorry... Kari... This must have... Been such a... Terrible birthday... I'll make it up to you... One day... I promise..." Allen thought as he took his last breaths.
Back at home Kari saw what was really in the bag other than fish ramen and a few protein bars and other food. There was an army green cap, blue fingerless biking gloves with silver lining, silver rimmed goggles with slightly tinted lenses, and her favorite one, the silver ninja scarf. There was also a card in the bag so Kari slowly took the card and opened it hesitantly.
"Dear Kari, I hope you like the gifts. I bought them while you weren't looking. I saw how much you wanted them so I thought I'd get 'em for ya. Happy birthday! Love Allen." Kari sniffled as a small smile appeared on her lips. She went to sleep for the night happily as she hoped Allen would come home that night.
When she woke up Allen was not home so she decided to go and look for him. That was when she saw a news report in the window of an electronics shop. It was about Allen's death and the shooting last night. Kari blinked as her eyes began to get all watery from the news.
"Allen... Isn't coming home..." Kari sniffled to herself sadly and then heard people talking amongst themselves. Kari then turned and ran home to cry on her mat, thinking about Allen. Soon Kari made a memorial for Allen in her old tree so she could visit every now and again. Kari then began to live on her own in the cave that once belonged to her older brother along with many of his things such as an old black MP3 player with golden buttons and black headphones that she later drew her symbol on both ears and a blue cord. She also took possession of his skateboard and customized it to her liking. She soon slowly stopped visiting Allen since she got too busy, but she never forgot him.
----- End flashback ----- (A/N THE FEELS!!)
Kari walked into the training room and she saw Pit getting ready. She smiled lightly and got ready herself. Soon both were ready and training their best.
"Come on, Kari, give it your all!" Pit called as he went for an attack. Kari blinked and unknowingly activated her barrier as Pit got closer. Kari blinked then smirked at this with a giggle and then went for an attack. Soon training had ended and Kari had trained some of her abilities without really meaning to. Pit sighed and watched as Kari went to check on Palutena. He smiled contently as he followed close behind, thinking he would tell Palutena about training today when Kari left the library. The day went on, not very eventful since the underworld army was oddly inactive.
