It had been almost a month since Hades had kidnapped Kari. The god had put her under Thanatos's care in his impenetrable fortress in the sea and put her in a cell that had no bars, made of the strongest material known to the gods, no windows other than the observation window that looked into the hallway, it was a one way window though so Kari could not see out. The young demi-godess had tried multiple times to get out but Hades knew how to work the system. He knew her weakness. Kari could only use her abilities when she had the energy to do so, there for she had to eat a lot of food. So he made her meals small and not very nutritious so she lost energy quicker. But even without her abilities, Kari never gave in.

"I WILL GET OUT! YOU HEAR ME GOD OF DEATH!! YOU CAN'T KEEP ME IN HERE!!" Kari yelled as Thanatos hovered from outside the door, holding her lunch in his right palm like a waiter.

"Yeah, yeah. Pipe down. Yeesh you've been at this for almost a month now half breed. I can tell your body's wearing down from here. And I'm not even looking in the window! So why not give up and help yourself?" The god of death was right. Kari had sustained so many injuries from beatings to break her into submission, like Pit was when he was captured. Deep wounds all over her from head to toe, a gash across her left eye which forced her eye shut because it hurt to open and much more. Kari growled.

"Would you quite taunting me!" Kari called in anger as she began to feel weaker by the second. Then her stomach growled so loud that the underworld troops could hear her from the other side of the fortress. Thanatos rolled his eyes. He had been there for almost an hour now just poking fun at the girl.

"Fine, fine. Here." He opened the door and tossed in Kari's food, not even caring if it got all over the floor. Kari rushed to the food as the door slammed shut and gathered as much as she could from the metal tray as well as the floor around the tray and began stuffing her face like an animal. Kari was thinner than she used to be and her eyes had bags under them and were dulled in a seeming lifeless way, highlighting her lack of sleep. When Kari finished eating she gulped and sighed with a sniffle.

"... Let me out..." Kari murmured as she huddled up in the far right corner of her cell and hugged her knees to her chest.

Back in Skyworld Pit was frantically walking back and forth by the mission door while grumbling impatiently.

"Pit, please. Just a little bit---"

"But Lady Palutena we don't have much time! Kari could be in great danger! I have to rescue her! She could be hurt... Or... Or..." Pit gulped at the thought of Kari's "Or worse" scenario. He shook his head frantically in denial and began to tap his left foot impatiently with crossed arms. Suddenly the mission door opened.

"Hey," Called a feminine voice. "Sorry I took so long. Dark Pit wouldn't get his butt in gear." It was Viridi, goddess of nature.

"What is it you need from us?" Dark Pit huffed as he glared at Pit and Palutena then noticed Zeus. "And you are." He asked in a disrespectful "I don't really care" kind of tone.

"I am Zeus. I suggest you change your attitude mister or you shall regret it." As Zeus said this Dark Pit felt a chill rush up his spine and he nodded with an uncomfortable gulp.

"Alright," Palutena began as she clapped her hands. "Viridi, you remember Selene?"

"Yeah."

"Well, her daughter was just kidnapped by Hades and the underworld forces. Knowing what Selene was capable of then there is no doubt that Hades will keep her very well guarded and then some. So we need all the help we can get for this." The goddess of light explained.

"Uh-oh... So what's the plan?" Viridi asked and Dark Pit whispered to Pit, asking what Palutena was talking about and Pit explained to him. Dark Pit widened his eyes in shock as he heard exactly what Kari was.

"Ok, the plan it simple... Sort of." Palutena said with a nervous smile. "So, Pit and Pitto you will both infiltrate the impenetrable fortress and--"

"Wait, why there?" Dark Pit asked and Palutena rolled her eyes.

"Because, that is a fortress to keep things in. It has other uses other than war. Why do you think it's at the bottom of the ocean? It's hard to get in AND hard to get out. The PERFECT place to keep Kari." Dark Pit sighed and let Palutena continue. "So, you two will infiltrate the impenetrable fortress with my help and Viridi's help while Zeus, Arlon and Phosphora distract Hades, Medusa and Serpendes. Understood?" Everyone nodded and the plan was underway.

Zeus talked with his second brother, Poseidon, explaining that Kari was trapped in the impenetrable fortress and the god of the ocean needed to part the waters for Pit and Dark Pit to get through. Poseidon agreed and let the two angels pass through his waters to the fortress.

"We have to hurry!" Pit called as he looked around frantically with Dark Pit following close behind. The two ran frantically to find Kari. Soon they heard an all too familiar laugh and they skid to a stop.

"Ha ha ha! Looks like chicken and Dark chicken have come to save the little half breed. How touching!" The god of death laughed moments later upon the two turning into a big corridor.

"Give Kari back Thanatos!" Dark Pit growled as he gripped his bow. Thanatos only laughed more as his stubby feet kicked in the air.

"You'll never find her with that attitude!" He called after his laughing fit. Pit growled in annoyance and shot an arrow at the god of death.

"We don't have time for this! We need to get Kari!" He said and Dark Pit nodded.

"Yeah, I'll take care of this fat snake while you keep going!" Dark Pit stated and Thanatos gasped in surprise.

"Fat snake? Ah, I'm wounded!"

"Alright, thanks Pitto!" Pit smiled then ran off. Dark Pit grumbled then began to fight Thanatos.

As Pit went on through the levels of the fortress, he soon arrived at the lowest level and came across a steel colored door with a one way window. Pit looked in and went wide eyed. There he saw Kari curled up into a ball in the far right corner of the room, half asleep from the looks of it. Pit frowned then began to kick the door, but it was locked. He growled then shot the door down and rushed towards Kari with a worried expression.

"Kari? Kari?!" Pit called sadly and lightly shook Kari as his frown grew. She was cold and shivering.

"...p...pit? Is... That really you? I'm..

Not dreaming?" Kari asked as her head tilted up to see if it really was him. Pit looked at Kari's condition and gulped and pulled her into a hug while sobbing.

"No... No you're not dreaming, Kari. I'm so sorry it took me so long to save you. I'm so sorry." Pit sobbed and held Kari closer. Kari gave a light smile as her stomach gave a light growl. She lightly hugged him back with a weak smile.

"I knew you'd come... I knew you'd think something was wrong if I didn't come home after a while... I knew you wouldn't leave me..." Kari said and Pit nodded then picked Kari up bridal style and carried her out of the cell to see that Dark Pit was waiting for them in the hall. He frowned upon seeing Kari so hurt then looked to Pit, who just gave a slight nod.

The two then went back to Skyworld and Kari was rushed to the infirmary immediately after she arrived. Pit went to go help but was stopped by Dark Pit, who just shook his head.

"She'll be fine."

Moments later Kari was awake and smiling her usual bright smile once again. Viridi came and introduced herself to Kari and the two got to know each other a little bit better before the goddess of nature and Dark Pit had to leave.

"Hey, Kari. Come by my place some time. I think you'll like it. My troops would love to meet you as well as my commanders." Viridi said with a giggle before she left.

"I'll do that." Kari replied and Viridi and Dark Pit were gone. Pit came in and sat next to Kari with a sad expression as he looked at the eye patch over Kari's eye.

"... This... Shouldn't have happened..." Pit whispered and Kari looked at him.

"Pit... Stop it." Kari grumbled and flicked the angel's forehead as her cheeks puffed out slightly. Pit blinked in shock and looked at her. "Stop beating yourself up. I'm here and alive aren't I?"

"Well--"

"Aren't I?"

"Yeah... But you're still hurt." Pit said and Kari flicked his forehead again.

"At least I'm not dead!" Kari called out and Pit blinked then shuddered at that thought. He then gave a nod.

"Yeah. You're right..." He chuckled lightly then gripped Kari's hand a little too tight, making the girl wince. "Oops, sorry." He called quickly then released her hand then helped her with whatever Kari needed.

That night when Pit fell asleep in the chair next to the door to Kari's infirmary room he had a nightmare. A nightmare where he was too late.

Pit rushed into the impenetrable fortress alone and filled with rage. He turned a down a big hall and saw Thanatos in his way. Pit had no choice but to fight.

"You'll never save her. She'll die here!"

"Shut it!" Pit growled and attacked Thanatos with no mercy. Once he was done Pit quickly went to Kari's cell and shot down the door to find Kari in the far right corner of the cell hugging her knees. Pit went up to her and noticed her skin was no longer her usual nice peach-tan color but rather an unusually pale white. Kari was unnaturally cold and she was covered in blood.

"... Can't... Hold..." Kari muttered from her chapped bloody lips.

"Kari, Kari please! Just hand on. You're gonna be ok, I promise!" Pit gulped as he begged her to hold on just a little longer.

"I'm...sorry... I'm so... Tired..." Kari began to close her heavy eyelids. "So... Tired..."

"No! Kari, no! Stay awake Kari! Stay with me please! Kari keep your eyes open!" Pit cried as he picked Kari up. Kari smiled weakly at Pit and put her right palm around his cheek and he knew what it meant. He knelt down and held Kari close while sobbing and leaning into her palm which he held on his left cheek.

"I'm sorry..." Kari whispered as she took her last breath. Pit broke as he felt Kari's hand go limp and he let out a sad scream while holding Kari close as if it would bring her back.

"Kari! No, Kari! Please! I... I never got to tell you that... That I--"

Pit jolted awake and slammed Kari's room door open to find her still sound asleep on the infirmity bed. The angel felt where his heart was and gave a relieved sigh as he felt like he just had a heart attack.

"Kari..." He whispered to himself then went back to his chair outside and looked to the clear star filled sky. "I... I've fallen for her... Haven't I?" He asked himself with a small smile as he drifted off into another slumber.
