Chapter 8 - Making Friends with Werewolves
As we settled down at the dining table, I saw both Veer and Ved were absent. Their absence made me unnecessarily uncomfortable around the others. I eyed around the table and saw Neera at the head. Trilok, Vishal, Triveni everyone was present but Maya.
I concentrated on the food instead. Turning my plate up, I placed two Parathas on my plate along with mango pickle and curd. My eyes swayed to the opposite direction where Ashifa and Abhay were sitting. In fact, they looked content sitting beside each other.
Beside me, a girl was seating whom I didn't see last night. She was a teenager by the look on her face. She had exactly the same eyes as the twins but with a lighter shade, more like Vishal's.
She gazed up at me and grinned. I smiled back.
"Hey, you're Urvi! Aren't you?" She asked with a cheerful voice while her eyes twinkled.
"Yes." I was about to ask her name, before she added, "I'm Tista. The Twins are my elder brothers and there you see," she pointed towards Vishal and Triveni with the corner of her eyes, "my parents."
I nodded as I took a bite. While she continued with a hush, "Well, unfortunately I don't have a twin like everyone else has in the packhouse. Though, my brothers never let me feel left out. I am really fortunate to have them in my life. I had heard of your arrival but hadn't had time to meet you since I was busy completing my project. I'm assigned the subject of the Rogues in the West. They are the worst kinds, you know?"
I wasn't sure how long she was going to continue until Vishal rebuked all of a sudden, "Tista, don't talk while eating."
She rolled her eyes then stuffed a piece of chicken into her mouth. I glanced over at Abhay who looked delighted to find meat in the breakfast. Everyone was in fact engrossed in eating. My eyes wandered around the place as they froze on a particular someone. Rohan. He was looking at me with an intensity that made me sit straight at once with closed legs. Our eyes locked momentarily until he looked away and continued eating.
My heartbeat suddenly went into a frenzy. Why was he giving me that intense attention? I blinked and averted my gaze as well and caught Tista looking at me with an amused look plastered on her face.
She wiggled her eyebrows glancing at Rohan then back at me and grinned. "I heard he's looking for his potential mate," she whispered to me, "and clearly he seems to be interested in you."
"Mate?" I wasn't sure what she meant by that.
"Yeah, he wants someone who's as powerful as him and who can back him up against the Alpha of the Highlander Pack of Scotland. He was assigned the entire Europe for that matter. He will be leaving soon. Perhaps, by the end of this week." She shrugged as she said so.
Everything went over my head. I stared at her, mouth agape.
"I don't think I am understanding," I said honestly.
She looked at me incredulously. Then put down the piece of Paratha that she was about to eat then asked me back, "You do know right about what our pack deals with?"
I shook my head. I had no idea.
She took a quick look around the table before throwing her skeptical gaze at me and whispered "We deal with the issues related to Rogues, Faeries and Demons. But recently the Highlander Pack has been caught giving induction to a few rogues to their pack. It's a serious issue. So Alpha asked Rohan and his team of werewolves to look into the matter."
I scrunched together my eyebrows, "Werewolves?"
Now she gave me an annoyed look, "Why are you questioning back the obvious?"
"I don't know what you meant by werewolves. Is that a code-name for his team?" I asked her genuinely.
However, all of a sudden, she burst out laughing. Everyone seated at the table turned their eyes at her then at me. I felt like running from here immediately and hiding at some place, where I could just pretend disappearing into thin air. My face felt hot. I looked down avoiding everyone's curious gaze on me.
"Tista!" Vishal chided, "What are you doing?"
By then she had gone quiet. Only that, after every few seconds a rush of giggles was escaping her mouth.
"May we know what is so funny here?" It was Neera. Her cold voice boomed across the table and I wouldn't lie, I did flinch a little at her icy deadpanned voice.
Tista cleared her throat, "Aunty Neera, I was just getting acquainted with Urvi."
"That's fine. However, I do not approve of the ill-mannered behavior at the time of eating. Or any time, if I should add. If you're done with your breakfast, go to your room and finish the project."
Tista nodded sternly, "Yes Beta."
Then she stood up with an apple and left, giving me a wink. Soon after she left, everyone else also left one by one. I got up to leave as well when Neera called after me, "Urvi, I want you to stay back for a while. I need to have a word with you."
I nodded curtly and sat back. When the dining hall was totally vacated, she addressed me with her usual icy voice, "You're going to work closely with our best trackers. They are best in every way and have very little weakness if I count." She leaned forward and placed her elbows on the table, knitting the fingers together.
I gulped nervously and nodded. I didn't know what else I was expected to do.
However, she paid no heed to me and continued, "I don't want you to become their weakness." She threw me a hard stare, "Are you getting my point?"
I nodded stupidly.
"Good. I think you'll do well. Now," she ordered me after that, "I have asked Abhay to meet you at the gate with all the needed equipment. Ved and Veer will also be there by now as far my watch tells me." She took a quick glance at her watch. "So, you better get ready and meet them pronto."
"Sure, Ma'am." I stood up.
"Call me Beta," She corrected me that instant, making me gulp.
"Sure... Beta," I obliged timidly and ran from there without any delay.
Feeling intimidated was becoming my constant mood around here.
