Chapter 4 - First Day at Work
Later, when I again met Mr. Rudra in his office after the lunch hour, he straightforwardly came to the point, the moment I entered his office.
He was still working on his computer when I entered his office. Even though he acknowledged my presence, he didn't look up. "Ms. Urvi."
"Yes." I observed him closely. He was a strict leader and that was so obvious from his deep, unwavering voice and serious demeanor.
"Some issues came up lately," he said, "so, I couldn't manage my legal department to prepare the contract papers in such a short time. Although, I've asked them to give it to me by tomorrow. You'll only receive your appointment letter by tomorrow. But until then if you feel like working, you can accompany me to the meeting today. I wouldn't press you." He said it all out together before casting his gaze up on me.
As his eyes fell on me, my thought process seemed to get stuck in his eyes. I again realized how green actually his eyes were, it was practically inhuman.
When I noticed he raised an eyebrow in a questioning gesture, I faltered, "Um...no! I don't have any problem. I will go with you."
Why would I even have any problems? I was literally unemployed right now and he was being beyond generous in providing me a job and accommodation without any crash interview. Then why would I have any problems? I chided at myself mentally for ranting inside my head unnecessarily. I was probably overanalyzing everything, which I often do. I wouldn't lie about that.
I was having that weird conversation with myself in my head, when he assessed me with an appraising look without saying anything. After a moment, he dropped his gaze on the papers sitting in front of him as he wrote something down on it. Then collected all of them together and placed them in a file. Closing the file, he again focused on me as I was still standing there in front of him, he extended the file towards me, "These are some important documents, we'll be needing in tonight's meeting. I want you to go through them and memorize some key points, I have already underlined. I want you to back me when I'll need to be reminded of them. Understand?"
My eyes widened, "Yes Sir." But how? I was so bad at memorizing stuff. I took the file from him, looking at it the whole time, dreading.
He then showed me an adjacent cabin to his right and being the stupid ass that I was, I didn't notice it until then. The entire right hand side wall was actually made of glass which overlooked the entire cabin on the other side. Did I really miss noticing it or was there anything that had it hidden? I didn't know but I hoped to find out soon.
After he motioned me to go there, I quickly obliged with a single nod. As I made it through the glass door, I noticed this cabin was a small one, with cream colored walls on two sides. The opposite wall of Mr. Rudra's cabin was also made of a similar glass wall, which again overlooked a similar looking cabin just like Mr. Rudra's. Whose cabin was that? I took a good look at the next door cabin and noticed it has a similar interior except the color. This room had a color combination of deep blue, grey and taupe. However, the good thing was, it was currently unoccupied.
I took a deep breath of relief as I walked over to the single desk sitting in the middle of my cabin. I noticed there was a laptop, a few writing pads and pens, an intercom and a water bottle. Okay. Not Bad. I went around the desk and sat down keeping the file on the desk before eyeing around the place one more time.
Actually, I just realized, from both the cabins I was overtly exposed. I mean, come on. I came to work here that's true, but wouldn't I have a tiny bit of privacy around my working space? I still didn't know who my other neighbor was.
I huffed before deciding on concentrating on the file before me.
Okay, so what is this? As I opened the file, the first thing I saw was a picture of a girl. Below it, there was some information written about the girl.
Name - Faerie #3
It made no sense to me.
Age - 19.
Ability - Spring.
Again, it didn't make any sense to me.
Last seen - Near the southwest side of Uraan Forest around 8:35 pm.
Here Mr. Rudra has underlined the sentence. That meant I needed to remember the place.
The date was given below it and I calculated it was eight days earlier.
Abducted by - A creature of night.
Hmm, this was interesting. What creature exactly wasn't specified.
I flipped the page. Her face and figure description was written. I ran my eyes through the page until I found an underlined section again.
The vial found on the spot was uncapped and had no fingerprints on it except of the Faerie #3. But the wand she was carrying had two distinct fingerprints.
Okay. Weird. What wand exactly. I skimmed through the next few lines but did not find any specifications.
I flipped the page and found another girl's picture.
Name- Human #6
Age - 22
Profession - Law Student
Last seen - Behind Starcross Night Club around midnight.
The date was the day before yesterday.
Abducted by - A creature of night.
What the hell was this creature of night?
My eyebrows knitted in a frown. So, this was some investigation shit. What did the abbreviation stand for? S & I?
My answer was written on the top of the page which I again being the stupid that I was, didn't notice until now. Such a careless employee I'd make. I rolled my eyes before reading. Rudra Security and Investigation Services Limited.
I bit my tongue. Who was I kidding? Action, adventure and danger would now never leave me. I flipped the page and searched for the underlined section for the victim number two.
Victim's purse was found with everything in it intact. However, there was an acid burn at one corner which caused her scarf and phone to get destroyed. No information could be found from her phone.
I frowned as I noted them down on a pad which was when I felt self-conscious suddenly. The hair at the back of my neck stood in attention.
There was this weird sense of being watched that ran down my spine. I stopped writing, then turned my head towards Mr. Rudra's room.
Our eyes met and I paused moving.
What on earth was he doing completely turning towards me? He was watching me intently with one of his hands resting upon the desk, another one holding the armrest. He didn't even look away when I furrowed my eyebrows at him. As we sat there watching each other for a few seconds, an uneasiness crept up my spine. What the hell? Was he checking me out? It was definitely creepy. I did not like it, despite how good looking he actually was. But before I could reach any goddamn conclusion he reached over and picked the wireless intercom without breaking the eye contact.
I jumped slightly at the ring of the intercom, despite knowing, he was calling me. I received the call, in the process avoiding looking at him.
"Urvi," he said over the phone.
"Yes Sir?"
"Come to my room, along with the file."
"Sure Sir," As soon I said so, he hung up the call. I stood up collecting the file and the writing pad from the table then walked over towards the connecting door. But I was aware, the entire time his eyes were on me and I wouldn't lie, it was creeping me out.
I went over to him and hesitantly looked up at him. He gestured to the seat in front of him with his eyes, "Please sit down."
I did.
He turned his own chair forward then leaned closer placing both of his elbows on the desk, conjoining his fingers in front of him. His eyes never left mine. I was starting to sweat under my arms. And why the hell was my cheeks on fire? I was beyond anxious.
After a short pause, which seemed like an hour, (considering the exaggeration), he said, "I haven't asked you about your background. Can you please tell me something about yourself?"
I stared at him dumbfounded. The hell! He scared the shit out of me just to ask about my background? And here I was over analyzing things, which I always do nonetheless. I groaned inwardly.
I stuttered in the beginning, "Oh, I- umm, I was raised in an- umm... orphanage."
"Really?" He asked. He seemed genuinely interested.
"Yes. Since I was eight, I lived in that orphanage. Until when I turned twenty this August, they asked me to move out."
He nodded, encouraging me to continue. His eyes bore into mine, assessing everything that came out of my mouth. "I then did a job as a toddler's nanny before coming over here."
"Why did you leave the nanny's job?"
There came the question I was dreading the most. Because I killed someone. No, that wouldn't be a suitable answer at this moment. I needed to think quickly. "I - uh- wanted to change my job profile."
He nodded slowly in understanding after hearing my answer. He had bought it? Well, that's good. I waited for his next question which came shortly, "So, you don't remember your parents?"
"No sir. Not a single memory."
"Interesting. Considering you were eight, and as far my knowledge tells me, that age can keep memory just fine. At least some of them would obviously remain intact."
"I know. But I had no memory when I woke up that day in my orphanage. They told me I had fallen from a tree and hit my head, losing all my memories."
"Hmm. Interesting," He again asked after a small pause. His words were carefully weighed, "Do you have any quality, I mean some special abilities that could help you in your current job?"
My brows furrowed at the weirdness of his question. What did he mean by that? Sure, not something indicating ... Oh no! I looked at him horrified, "No. No special abilities Sir. I am a pretty ordinary girl if you ask me. I know not what special ability can benefit me." I sure as hell was not going to do that. Even if the consequences led me to sleep on the footpath.
But he didn't say anything afterwards, instead went absolutely mum all of a sudden. His attention broke away from me as he averted his gaze and focused on the computer screen. Then he leaned forward and started typing, completely forgetting my presence in the room.
I just sat there quietly fidgeting on my seat. He was a weird man. Freaking me out frequently since I came here. After almost ten minutes or so, he stopped his typing and gazed up from the screen.
"I want you to type three letters for me. I have a draft ready already," By saying that he reached over and took a file that was resting on one side of his table and gave it to me. "Can you do that?"
I had basic knowledge in computers, so I knew how to type. I nodded taking the file from him, then went to my cabin again to do my work.
Rest of the day was quite uneventful until around 6 pm he summoned me again.
"Okay. Let's go."
"Where?"
"Have you already forgotten we have a meeting to attain?"
"Oh, yes. I'm sorry." I blushed as I lowered my gaze on the files and the writing pad I was holding.
He stood up from his seat, as I hastily followed him. His personal phone that was kept on the table went off the same moment as he grabbed it and answered it in no time. But didn't say anything immediately, just listened. Probably the other person was telling him something serious, as I saw his eyebrows creased while listening. Finally, a minute or so later he sighed and said, "Fine. But be careful."
Putting on his suit, he then came round the table and went towards the door. I picked the indication that it was time for us to leave. I followed him out quickly just when I remembered about my luggage. They were still sitting by the door of Mr. Rudra's office.
I hurriedly said, "Umm Sir. My luggage."
He turned his head towards me without pausing on his track and said, "I'll have someone escort them to your room in the house."
"Oh, okay," was all that I could say while following him out of Rudra S & I.
When we reached his house, it was almost 7 pm.
The whole car ride was a pin drop uncomfortable silence until he broke it just before entering through the driveway of his house. "We're here."
My eyes scanned the exterior as I found my jaw dropped to the floor. It was huge. Much appropriate term would be... it was a mansion with brown walls and yellow detailing. "This is our pack house," He announced as the car came to a halt.
Pack house! What was that? "What is a pack house?" I asked, clearly oblivious of the term.
"You'll know soon," He answered briefly, causing me to furrow my brows in confusion, "And one more thing Urvi." He paused earning my full attention. "You'll stay outside the meeting room until you're asked to enter. Yes?"
"Yes, sure." I nodded.
"It's a vital and very secretive meeting we're going to attain. So, be careful about it, you cannot disclose anything about it to anyone. And I meant... none. Am I clear?"
I hurriedly nodded.
"Come."
We exited the car and I followed him inside. My eyes were dignified absorbing everything's beauty. He guided me through the hallway, and we reached the stairs. The whole time he remained silent and I did not notice any other person since entering the mansion, umm- packhouse. But what exactly was a packhouse? I was wondering while climbing the stairs as my eyes darted towards the paintings hanging on the wall alongside the staircase. One of them caught my eyes specifically. It was of an intriguing beautiful red wolf and it's intricate detailing was mesmerizing. I have never seen such a beautiful beast in my waking life. The painting looked so alive that I thought I could spend hours admiring and savoring its beauty.
"Urvi," Mr. Rudra called, breaking my attention from the painting. I turned my head to see he was waiting a few steps up for me to follow him. He tilted his slightly gesturing at me to keep going, "Come." His dark emerald eyes twinkled in amusement as he observed my absorbency on the painting.
I nodded before taking one last glance at the painting and following him.
We traversed another long corridor before turning right and again walked a little more before he stopped me in front of a closed double door.
"Wait here until I call you inside," He said to me.
As I nodded acknowledging his instruction, he reached for the door knob then slipped inside. I stood there waiting as I saw someone walking this way. I noticed he was carrying two bags which coincidentally happened to be mine.
As he came closer, I walked a few steps towards him. I figured by the look on his face, he was probably of my age. I initiated our conversation, "Hi."
He nodded acknowledging me as he stopped before me, "Hello."
I pointed at my bags, "Those are mine."
He looked down at the bags then back on my face with a smile, "Of course. Don't worry about them. They're in the right claws."
In reply I just let out an airy laugh at his unusual analogy.
"I am Urvi. Nice to meet you."
"Myself Jai. Nice meeting you too. And welcome to the packhouse."
Again packhouse. What exactly was it? "What is a packhouse?" I asked him curiously.
His smile vanished from his face. Then he drawled, "Umm- it's where we all live...together."
I nodded, unsure if he was actually telling the truth. We then exchanged another half-smile before Jai excused himself walking past me to my allotted room probably. I went back to where I was standing, that was just beside the door, again overanalyzing. I noticed the file was still in my hand.
I pondered on the case. These girls were missing and I was having a gut feeling that they were probably dead. These Rudra people are investigating the case, while it was supposed to be carried on by police. What exactly was happening? I hoped I'd figure it out once I got inside the room.
