Chapter 2 - A New Start

Next day around 8:30 in the morning the train reached the destination. The near deserted platform welcomed me with a fresh chilly mountain wind. As I had no knowledge of this city, my heart was palpitating in apprehension.

The ticket collector was checking tickets at the exit. I strode towards him quietly and handed him my ticket. He checked, then tore it in half before ushering me to exit the platform.

Clearing my throat quickly I quickly asked him, "Excuse me, Sir?"

He turned his attention on me, his eyebrows slightly crooked, "Yes?"

"Can you help me with this address?" I asked as I showed him the advertisement in the newspaper.

His eyes fell on it. He took the paper from my hand then read the address. His brows rose slightly as he gazed back at me. Then said politely, "Yes of course. You can avail the shuttle services right outside the railway station. Ask them to drop you by Rudra S&I. Right opposite to the Rudras there is your destination."

I nodded at him gratefully, "Thank you very much for your time."

"You're welcome." He smiled at me then walked away. I left the station vicinity and went outside. More or less twelve shuttles were waiting in a line.

I hopped ahead and asked one of them to drop me by Rudra S & I. He agreed and I jumped into the shuttle right away. The vehicle came to life insisting me to leave my past in the past, which I've wanted to anyway, at any cost.

Finally, when the shuttle stopped in front of a four-story building, I had already stepped into the unknown to care about any inconvenient outcome.

I did a quick scrutiny of the corporate office, which was four story high and had an exterior with bottle green color and detailing with off-white. The color alone made it stand-out among the other buildings around. I averted my attention to the opposite side. And sure enough, there stood a school building in white and blue.

The school was the exact opposite of what I had imagined in my head. I had thought it'd be an old murky looking building. Turned out St. Louis Convent School was a two storied, with high boundary walls and a grand main gate, decorated with a pair of angel statues. I stared at them in awe taking a few moments to steady my nerves before reaching for the gate. I didn't know what to expect from my destiny. Then also, I had to take a leap to move on in my life.

Steading my nerves, I was about to push open the iron gate, when a man aged between thirty to thirty-five stopped me. Seemingly, he was the gate-keeper as he was wearing some sort of uniform. He inquired about my visit and listened to me attentively when I told him the reason. He seemed to be a nice person, in fact.

He asked me follow him. "Where are you from Ms. Urvi?" He asked while we were walking along the corridor.

To my left, there was this large and empty playground and at the right, there were lined up classrooms, packed with small kids. I noticed each class had one teacher teaching the kids.

I took a deep breath. I wasn't sure whether I should say anything related to my past to anyone. Then also without a background they probably wouldn't hire me. There was risk in both ways. I decided to give in.

"Kolkata," I replied quietly.

"Wow. That's great. My cousin works there, in a garments factory," he said cheerfully.

I didn't feel to show any enthusiasm for his comment so I just nodded curtly and followed him. My heart was already palpitating thinking about my future and I didn't want to add to it.

When he stopped before a closed door and told me it was the Principal's room. I took a deep breath before knocking on the door. "May I come in?"

After a couple of seconds, I heard a deep, calm voice, "Yes. Come in."

I quietly pushed through the door and met with the principal. He looked up from his paper to me and I felt as if his brown eyes behind the gold-rimmed spectacles analyzing me, right through my soul.

His voice was the calmest of all I had ever heard. He was probably in his late fifties, and of average height and built. I entered the room and he offered me a seat. I took the seat hesitantly in front of him, hoping my desire would get fulfilled here.

"How may I help you, Miss -?" He said looking straight into my eyes.

"Urvi," I hurriedly introduced myself.

"Pleasure. Myself Father Andrew." He smiled then blinked as he put down his pen focusing full on me, "How may I help you Ms. Urvi?"

I blinked nervously to avoid his direct gaze. The sudden feeling of being exposed under his concentrated tranquil gaze was getting to me. I uncomfortably shifted in my seat. "I-uh."

He waited, without any sign of displeasure.

I inhaled gingerly, then blurted out, not caring about the consequences for my unprofessional behavior, "Father, can you please help me with any employment. Any job at all. This. I noticed this in the newspaper." As I said that I brought out the newspaper from inside my duffle and showed him, "This vacancy article..."

He stopped me in between, "Yes. I am aware of that advertisement. So, tell me. Which profile do you want to apply for?"

"I don't know," I said, "To be honest, I do not have a proper degree to teach kids."

"Okay. Then I'm sorry, I couldn't really..."

Before he could dismiss me, I interrupted him in between, "I can do any job. Any assistance job or..."

Now he interrupted me, "Alright. I have something for you then. But, I apologize, I can't keep you in school."

Not getting what he was trying to say I stared at him in confusion. It'd be better to let him explain instead of contemplating on my own.

He continued, "I want you to kindly consider my request of going to the Rudras. They might help you out with a proper and compatible job for you," he said with a meaningful smile playing on his lips.

"I-I know not ... I mean I don't know them," I said honestly, not knowing what else I was supposed to say.

He asked me instead, "Where are you coming from?"

"Kolkata."

"Mm, south." He nodded thoughtfully, then arose from his seat. I copied him hastily, but he gestured me not to. So, I sat down again. He walked over to a bookcase in the corner as he continued calmly, "I suppose, you've only come here looking for a job."

I gulped. Then nodded once, "Yes."

"Very well then. Rudras are a trustee of our school. So, I'd recommend you to them. If they can help you, I'll be more than happy for you."

"Okay." I breathed, somewhat unsure.

He averted his gaze at me, "Don't be disappointed, my child. I hope something special is waiting for you. As we always say, everyone is meant for something special. Everyone is precious and very dear to God. You just need to have faith and serve him with all your worth. I hope we'll meet again."

I listened to him as an alarming thought crossed my mind. Would they run an investigation against me? Then find out I was a murderer? But there was no way I could have known that. Besides, I was too clogged up to ask him anything, so I stayed shut as he continued, "Johnathan will take you to Rudras. You should feel comfortable enough with him."

I nodded hesitant of what should be my precise reaction to that. I was about to leave his room when he suddenly enunciated, "Bigger things often look small at the beginning, my dear. But in the end, it is them who become the reason for everyone's astonishment. Have faith in yourself, my child."

I blinked, then nodded in uncertainty before leaving.

Future was vague and I knew nothing about how to control it.
