I wasn't sure how long I had been out, but when I woke up again, my condition was better. I didn't know what time it was when I re-awoke from my slumber and sat up groggily. The room was empty. I pulled the blanket aside from over me and noticed my shirt. It was torn and patches of dark blood had colored the shirt in many places. It might be the thorny bushes I had fallen on. I unbuttoned my shirt quickly to examine my wounds. But to my astonishment, there wasn't any bleeding wounds, instead they had almost healed. Only a few nicks and cuts were covering my skin here and there. Although my black bra was still in one piece, it was stained all over by my blood. Eww! I got off of the bed and went to the washroom.
I didn't realize how complicated my life has gotten until now. I was literally stuck in a forest watchtower with two werewolves and there's a demon out there, who'd been trying to kill me for God knew what. This had to be the most ironic situation I'd ever lived in my entire life.
The tiny bathroom had a shower, a washing sink and a toilet. What else I could expect in a forest. My mind reeled back to the Rudra brothers. Where the heck were they? My cheeks heated up as soon as I remembered I slept in Veer's arm before chickening out.
I opened the tap and washed my face, then wiped my face with the white towel that was hanging beside. It felt like I was in some primitive era with to neanderthal animal, which was practically true. I felt frustrated. Despite I didn't have anything else to wear, I needed to wash my bra. Unclasping my bra, I put it under the running water and washed it. Then I reached for my jeans and discarded it. My underwear wasn't dirty thankfully. The need of a shower overpowered me and I couldn't help but twisted the shower knob open.
The water was freezing. I almost shrieked when it hit me first. But I had no fucking choice. What life would have been if I had ended up in the jail? Perhaps monotonous but safe undoubtedly. I kept the shower open for some time until the water no longer felt cold. There was a scrubber I noticed beside the sink. I rubbed myself clean with it, then turned off the knob. Wrapping myself in the same towel that I had used earlier, I returned back to the room. I left the wet dresses on the hanger inside the bathroom.
Embarrassment and all the ladylike behavior had left me today morning when I entered the forest to hunt down the demon. At other times, I'd have jumped out of fright to encounter with the two tall and muscly Neanderthals in an empty room, but I was pissed this time. I didn't have the mood to put up with them. Plus, I wasn't sure what time it was and I was starving.
"What is the time?" I asked in an irritated voice.
Both of them checked me out before Ved responded, "9 o'clock."
Wow! I'd slept the whole afternoon and it was night now. I glanced at them. Both of them were wearing black track pants and worn-out black T-shirts. It'd have been difficult to recognize them distinctively, if it wasn't for their hair highlights.
"Do you have any spare clothes?" I asked with indifference not wanting to stretch the question any longer.
Veer went up to a cupboard at the corner of the room and found some old white T-shirt and a grey track pants, that too was torn. He walked up to me and held up his hand. I looked up in his eyes and they were the deepest green I've seen as an eye color. However, I noticed a faint red colored ring around his pupil. Interesting! Was it there before? I wasn't sure I had seen the red before. Werewolves were supposed to be scary, but I had no shame in admitting that these two brothers are freaking sexy. But I needed not to show my interest in them. I was determined to show my annoyance. So, I just snatched the clothes from him and went back to the bathroom to change.
The t-shirt was too big for me. But the sweat pants were for some giants. I shuffled the countertop and found a rusty razor. I worked it on the pants making it almost wearable. It ended at my mid-thighs. Looking at the mirror, I looked almost presentable. I untied my ponytail and let my brown frizzy hair down, looking like horror movie star.
The two were discussing something serious in a low voice when I returned to the room. My tummy unceremoniously growled. "I'm famished," I grumbled.
Both of them took me in from top to bottom for some seconds before Ved cleared his throat and both of them blinked and averted their gazes.
Veer asked if I am okay with meat, which I denied instantly. I was against eating meat since my childhood. He asked me to wait for some time until he came back and then he left me with Ved.
Ved walked towards the only window the room had and stood before it, watching the dark outside.
"Sir," I went up to him.
"Call me Ved."
"What?"
"Call me by my name."
"Oh- um, okay. Ved." I paused momentarily before adding again, "I was wondering, when will be the right time?"
"For what?"
"For you to answer my innumerable queries."
He said nothing, and I waited patiently. The ambience gradually turned awkward and at one time I actually lost my patience.
"Ved."
As soon as I said his name, he said, "Urvi, you aren't a human."
I knew it! I bloody damn suspected it. He knew something about me that I didn't. Since the time I met him in his office, he'd been treating me different than he should. If I wasn't a human, was I a werewolf as well? But I didn't turn into a wolf like them. Was something wrong with me?
He said no more after that and we both were lost inside our thoughts as we watched the night outside. The forest didn't seem that much scary to me as I had thought it'd be. Apart from the demon hiding there, it looked like... home? Err... what was this odd feeling? The crickets chirped together breaking the silence of the night. I looked up at the sky, today was full moon. The forest looked like it was bathing in the moonlight. In fact, I was quiet enjoying the silence here.
A chill suddenly ran down my spine. I sensed his eyes on me. A pair of deepest green. I tucked a loose strand beside my ear, suddenly over-conscious of myself and glanced sideways. He was watching me intently. My cheeks felt warm as I quickly diverted my eyes.
From my peripheral vision, I noticed him folding his hands against his chest and turning towards me. A while later, he stated quietly, "You're a hybrid, Urvi."
I looked at him, confused. Hybrid. What is that? "What is a hybrid?"
"You're a fae-wolf hybrid."
"What?"
Ved gazed at me closely and said nothing for a whole minute. I wouldn't lie but his silence was annoying. Nonetheless, the intensity made me nervous. After a dramatic pause, he stated, "Your origin belongs to two different species. Faes and Werewolves." Then he turned, went to the bed and plopped down.
Wait. He couldn't just disclose about my confusing origin and went off to sleep! I needed to know the whole story, and how the fuck he knew about this? He just couldn't leave me hanging on an incomplete information.
I strode to the bed. "Can you tell me how is that possible?" I folded my arms and huffed.
He watched me quietly. His eyes were twinkling in mirth, and I could see that clearly. I held up one of my hands and waved in front of his eyes, "Hello?"
He sat up and said, "Give me your hand."
I flinched. What! I relaxed my hands down and found myself stupidly looking at him.
He smirked. "Don't worry. You can trust me," he assured me.
But, to be honest, I didn't trust him a single bit. I couldn't just trust wild animals for God's sake!
He held up his hand and waited for me. I blinked. "Is this a joke?"
"Do I look like a joke to you?"
"Er..." Umm... no, I guess. I hesitantly placed my hands on his hand and he gave it a gentle squeeze. Then he instructed, "Now, concentrate on your breathing and try to picturize a wolf's claws."
I was skeptical, though I didn't tell him that. I closed my eyes and tried to picture a wolf. The first wolf that appeared was of the painting I had seen in the pack house. That beautiful red wolf with fierce eyes and glossy thick fur. It was so beautiful that I almost didn't notice when Ved got up and went behind me. A few minutes later, when nothing happened, I opened my eyes and didn't see Ved in front of me. Instinctively, I jerked and bumped into a hard chest behind my back.
"Oh!" I was slightly taken aback by his presence behind my back.
He said, "What are you thinking?"
I was very much aware of his front brushing against my back. His breathing lightly fell on my bare neck.
"The painting I had seen in the packhouse."
"What? A painting?" He asked incredulously. "A painting won't do. Think of a real wolf. Try to communicate with her."
"Err..."
Ved placed his other hand on my shoulder calmly and I felt goosebumps all over my skin. He smelt lightly of clove and peppermint and I could almost feel the warmth radiating from his body. He lifted up my hand in front of my eyes and said, "Focus on your breathing and try to visualize a wolf's claws. Communicate to your wolf. Once your wolf instinct takes over, you'll learn to shift easily."
I was confused. I didn't know what he was saying. Everything he said was foreign to me. But for the sake of it, I tried what he told me. Abruptly, his hand which was holding mine, changed into a black giant claw. I freaked out seeing my tiny hand in the giant claw. I jerked but he kept me there by pressing down on my shoulder. "Don't be afraid. Do, as I just did."
My eyes widened as I tensed up and closed my eyes. Where the fuck are you? Don't chicken out, wolfie! Come and talk to me.
A faint whimper resonated inside my mind. "Damn!" I muttered but I was panicked myself. This was crazy. I was going crazy.
A moment later, I heard a faint whine. I'm afraid.
Who and what are you afraid of?
I don't know.
Don't you think we should seek each other's help? After all we're each other's alter ego.
There was a pause for a long time. Then she replied, Okay. Tell me what to do.
Come out.
I could feel her hesitating. But a moment later, she agreed, Okay.
I opened my eyes and within a few seconds, in front of my own eyes my hand changed its color. My eyes widened. It was red. I panicked and jerked back but Ved, kept me on place forcibly. His grip on my upper arm increased as the pain diverted my fear a little. He whispered in my ear, "Focus!"
My eyes went wide as I saw my own hand becoming a wolf's claw. A beautiful dark red wolf's claw. Although my paw was small compared to the black one, it was big nonetheless. "O my God!" I breathed. "My- my wolf! OmyGod!"
"Calm down." His stopped me from jumping in panic. "Now take a deep breathe in and tell your wolf to leave. You'll call her when you'll need her."
"I- I- I can't," I cried out, shaking from panic.
"Yes, you can. Try."
I closed my eyes again. This time in fear and searched for the wolf again. Wolfie, what's your name?
Mani.
Mani? Okay. You need to go now. I'll call you when I need your help. Will you come?
You asked me whether we could help each other. But now you're telling me off?
Are you offended? Please don't. I'm kind of nervous myself. Can we talk later?
She didn't respond. So, I opened my eyes and stared at my hand. The red claw shimmered then disappeared leaving my hand intact.
"Well done!" Ved said and squeezed my hand again lightly. His paws were gone as well. Taking the opportunity, I split up from him and glared at him. "Do. Not. Ever. Do that to me!"
He smirked a little and shrugged then went to the bed and then fell down on bed and instantly fell asleep.
I cursed him while panting with panic. This was insane! My heart was thumping against my chest wildly. I averted my gaze from him and located Veer leaning on the door frame, watching me intently.
"When did you return?"
"Long ago," He replied briefly then came and stood in front of me.
I glared at him too, when he added, "You've been busy discovering your wolf. So, I kept quiet. Was that enjoyable?"
I yelled out, "It was not a joke. Alright? Don't ever made me do that, both of you." I glanced between the sleeping beauty and the laughing one and stopped on Veer's face.
He was grinning shamelessly which angered me even more. "Okay, I won't. Come, eat now."
My eyes lit up at the mention of food and my stomach obscenely growled aloud making him chuckle. On the corner table, there were some carrots, a bunch of yellow fruits I didn't recognized and a bottle of water.
"How did you get water in this forest?"
He shrugged. "The river you saw today morning, it's a hilly river, thus the water is safe for drinking."
My eyes went wide. "You mean, you went back to the river to bring me water? There's a demon waiting to kill us? Are you crazy?"
He chuckled. "Calm down. He won't show up until tomorrow because Drofyde's effect will remain until tomorrow. Besides, this forest is our territory. I cannot stop strolling around my territory because of some unwanted outsider."
I rolled my eyes then glanced down on the fruits and carrots. I wasn't sure if they were suitable for eating but I had no other choice. I was hungry. Also, I needed my answers and except these two, I didn't think anyone could answer me.
I quickly went towards the table and sat down on the ground cross-legged, avoiding Veer's following gaze. Outside my expectation, the yellow fruits were rather tasty. They had a tangy flavor with juicy flesh. The water seemed fine to me. I ate quietly while Veer continued gaping at me. At one point, it annoyed me so much that I turned my back at him and faced the other way. He chuckled but said nothing.
So, I asked, "What?"
"Nothing."
I turned my head at him again while munching on the carrot. He suddenly stood up and pulled over his T-shirt over his head. Now it was my turn to gape at him. Before I could react, he declared, "I'm going for a hunt."
Hunt? Well, I wanted to go as well. I needed answers. "No wait, I want to come, can I?"
He looked at me skeptically. "You want to go to the hunt? With me?"
"Yeah. Is there anything wrong with that? Now I can't even want to go as I wish?"
This was really frustrating.
"I didn't mean that," he said then shifted his gaze on his sleeping twin. He seemed to think something seriously then looked back at me. "Okay. Let's go."
I jumped up and followed him outside. He closed the door of the cabin while I stood aside, taking in his defined muscles. His toned body was something to die for. His back muscles tensed up for a split second before he turned and focused on me. I averted my gaze from him and looked at the dark, almost silenced forest. The crickets were chirping on and off.
He stepped ahead and descended the wooden stairs. I followed him and we stepped into the forest. To an unknown world, I was equally terrified and excited of.
