Chapter 4
Hello, minna! How is everybody. I've had a rough week with homework and volleyball. Most of our best players have left on exchange trips to Paris and Munich so it's been pretty tough, and we haven't won any matches. TˆT But anyway, just a heads up, today is my homework day, and I just happened to have this chapter ready so I'm posting it. However, next chapter of Dragon Boy and Princess (I need to come up with a better title) will be up later today, probably some time in the evening, so bear with me, but anways, here is chapter 4!
Sasuke had always known that something was wrong, that something differentiated him from his friends. As he grew older he realized what it was: practically every one of his friends had found their mate, and he hadn't. He had lived until the age of ten believing that he would one day find his mate. Every time he would ask his parents when he would find her, a strange expression would cross their faces, one he would later realize was guilt and pity, and they would give some vague answer or change the subject. The day he turned ten however, he had had enough of it, and had run away to the small tree house him and his older brother had built, leaving a note behind saying that he wouldn't come down until they told him what they were hiding about his mate. His mom came first, begging him to come down, that there were things he was too young to know and that she would explain in time. He refused. His father came next, harsh as always and tried to command him to come down. Sasuke had refused of course, and he was sure that his father would have soared up and pulled him down if not for his mother. Last to come was his brother, Itachi. Although seven years his senior, Itachi always played or trained with Sasuke, even if he also had a mate to take care of. Itachi hadn't even asked Sasuke to come down; he had simply come up and sat beside him for a while before he had spoken. Itachi always spoke to Sasuke as if he was an adult, and this time had been no different.
"Ka-san and Tou-san think they're doing the right thing, you know," he had said.
"I don't care whether they think they're doing the right thing or not," Sasuke had argued like the childish ten year old he was.
Itachi had simply flashed him a smile before continuing seriously.
"I understand that you're frustrated. I know I was frustrated when I couldn't find my mate for a while and everyone I knew had found his or hers, even though this isn't exactly the same situation," he had said with a sad tone to his voice.
Sasuke had turned to face him. He hadn't really known much, and still didn't know, the details about the situation with Itachi's mate, Mina, only that they hadn't met under the best circumstances and that it had something to do with the scars littering Mina's skin.
"So, are you going to tell me?" Sasuke had finally asked.
Itachi had looked at him for a moment before sighing and saying; "Well I don't see the point in keeping this from you any longer. You were bound to find out eventually. Just don't- never mind, just listen."
Sasuke had yelped when Itachi had reached over and plopped Sasuke on his lap.
"Hey, what do you think you're-!" he had started, flustered.
Itachi had shushed him and clasped his arms around him before beginning.
"You first met your mate when you were just a baby."
This had made Sasuke stop his struggles immediately.
"Ka-san had taken you to daycare for the day and just before she left, she saw you crawl over to another baby, a girl there and the mark of the Uchiha had appeared on her wrist. When she came back to get you, the keeper said that you two had been inseparable the whole day, and how lucky you were to have found each other at such a young age. Ka-san had wanted to talk to her mother, but she had come earlier to take her. All she knew was that the last name was Haruno."
The name Haruno had echoed in Sasuke's brain, the only clue he had had about his lifelong partner. Itachi's face had grown somber and his grip on Sasuke had tightened as he continued.
"That night though was the start of the war between The Great Villages and the Zetsus. The Haruno household was attacked and they all fled into the forest. When Konoha's forces recovered, they sent out a search party to look for them. They found two bodies that were identified as Kizashi and Mebuki Haruno surrounded by blood. They took some blood samples and tested them to see if there was any chance the child was alive, but-"
Sasuke's heart had contracted painfully and he hadn't known what he was doing, but he yelled, "STOP! Stop, I don't want to hear it!"
"You're the one who wanted to know, Sasuke," Itachi said sadly.
"I don't want to, I don't want to," he said, hiding behind his hands to not look pathetic.
Itachi had stroked the top of Sasuke's head, and after a moment of silence, he had said, "I'm truly sorry, Sasuke, but the blood was identified as hers."
Sasuke's whole world had shattered then, into little tiny pieces that had no hope of being put back together again. His breathing had become ragged and uneven. He had been vaguely aware of Itachi shaking him and yelling his name, and then it had gone dark.
From that day on, Sasuke had grown cold and distant, to his family, his friends, everyone he knew. He would leave a place as soon as someone's mate showed up and started to disappear for days at a time. He had been wallowing in his own despair, slowly drowning, until one day, a strange sun kissed boy had butted his way into his life, and no matter how hard Sasuke had tried, he couldn't get rid of him. They identified with each other because although Naruto knew who his mate was, he wasn't allowed to see her because everyone shunned him for being an Animus, highly powerful creatures that were very rare. His parents were dead and he had no family to rely on; he was on his own. In him, Sasuke found solace because although under different circumstances, this boy was just like him. Whenever Sasuke got into one of his moods, Naruto would be the one to come and drag him back. Thanks to him, Sasuke was able to live without his mate and had even accepted it even if it still pained him sometimes to see others with their significant others. He owed Naruto a lot, and for that reason had helped him be able to see his mate, Hinata Hyuuga.
The Uchiha and the Hyuuga were longtime friends holding a high social status in Konoha. Hinata and him had somehow become friends no matter how strange a combination it had seemed, and Sasuke had found himself feeling good about helping the two get together. Naruto ended up proving his worthiness to be her mate and a shinobi through his persistence and his accomplishments in the long war against the Zetsus. Thanks to him, he wasn't drowning. He didn't need a mate. So why was his inner telling him that this pink haired girl in front of him was his mate? It just wasn't possible. He had accepted his fate, so why was this girl bringing it all back?
He put a clamp on his emotions and stood protectively in front of Naruto who, Sasuke couldn't tell if he had fallen back asleep or not.
"Who are you?" he growled out.
The girl seemed to snap out of the stupor she was in and glowered at him as she took a defensive stance.
"I could ask you the same question," she said, her gaze wary.
The gears turned in Sasuke's brain and he glanced at the inanimate Naruto behind him. She must have given his something that prevented him from moving. That was the only explanation Sasuke could come up with.
"I'm the one asking the questions here, girl," he said, snapping out his fangs for extra emphasis.
He heard her small intake of breath, and he couldn't help but be fascinated by how soft her lips looked when she pursed them, the light shining off of them at just the right angle. He shook his head to try and clear it, blaming his distraction on his delirious state. When he looked back at her, to his surprise, her steely gaze had returned, no trace of fear or apprehension in her gaze. What was he doing just standing and staring at her? He should dispose of her immediately, or at least after she told him what she gave to Naruto. He soared towards her, katana in hand. Due to being a vampire, his speed was phenomenal, and allowed a certain measure of space between him and the ground. He was in front of her in a in a second. She froze with shock, not expecting him there and he raised his sword and brought it down in a swift motion.
He stared at the sword that was aimed right above her heart, frozen there. For some reason, he could not bring himself to kill her. It shouldn't be hard; he'd killed multiple Zetsus and some of their allies during the war, so why was he hesitating? Because she's our mate!
"No, she's not," he said, not realizing that he had spoken aloud. The girl seemed to take his hesitation as a chance and kicked him in the side. Under normal circumstances it would not have fazed him, but due to his injury, he fell to the ground as she pounced on top of him, pinning his arms and legs down. Her face was inches from his own and he felt the urge to lean up and close the distance between them, but he pushed it down.
"Now, who... are... you?" she said, breathing hard. Her jade green eyes were staring intensely into his onyx ones, and he could not look away. She opened her cute mouth to say something, but was interrupted, "Oi, Sakura-chaaaannn," Naruto's unmistakable voice drawled.
Sasuke blinked in surprise. The pink haired girl turned her head to Naruto who had somehow managed to drag himself over to the two of them, and had a strange grin on his face. "What are you doing on top of Sasuke-teme?"
"Wait, you know this guy?" the girl, apparently named Sakura asked, bewildered.
Sasuke couldn't help but find it funny and fitting that that would be her name. It echoed in his mind, and he latched onto it unwillingly.
"Course I do, teme is my rival/best friend," Naruto said, patting Sasuke awkwardly on the shoulder.
Sakura scrunched her nose in an adorable way and looked at Sasuke hard.
"So, are you planning on getting off of me?" Sasuke asked, raising a brow.
Sakura's face flushed visibly and she scrambled off of him. He got up and brushed himself off while Sakura helped Naruto back onto his makeshift bed. Sasuke hated to admit it, but he might have misjudged the situation.
"Sakuraaaa-chan, why can't I move my legs," Naruto slurred, staring at his legs confusedly.
"Because, idiot, I gave you that painkiller, remember? You weren't supposed to wake up for a while so you could rest. That's one of the side effects, but apparently, somebody woke you up," she said, shooting Sasuke a glare.
"In my defense, I had no idea what you had done to him," Sasuke argued rather lamely. Damn his wits for failing him.
"What does it look like? He's completely bandaged and was sleeping soundly," she said, her hands on her hips.
Sasuke opened his mouth and closed it. The world seemed to be spinning around him and it was all he could do just to stay standing. He pulled his cloak more tightly around him so she wouldn't notice, but apparently Naruto had other plans. He suddenly perked up and his eyes focused on Sasuke, his nose twitching. Sasuke wasn't feeling too good and was leaning rather heavily on his sword, trying to look casual.
"Sasuke, you smell like blood," Naruto said, his cerulean blue eyes burning holes into him.
"Psh, you must still be drugged, I'm perfectly fine," Sasuke said quickly, but Sakura's gaze had already snapped to him. She stalked over to him and ripped his cloak open, Sasuke too weak to stop her. She gasped and Sasuke looked down, finally seeing the stab wound in his gut and his shirt drenched with blood dripping onto the floor around him. That was all it took for everything to come crashing down on him. He swayed and fell, his legs giving way underneath him. It was all he could do to stop himself from himself on his katana.
He vaguely heard Naruto saying his name, and then a warm hand on his face before everything went black.
