Nine
Sudden
Faith continues to bleed out in the bottom of the hole as Calum throws more dirt on top of her.
"Please." Faith begs as she tries to claw her way out of the dirt with one hand. "Please stop."
"I gave you so many chances to behave Faith. You did this to yourself. This is your fault." Calum speaks to her as if she is a child he has punished by putting her in the corner of a room to think about what she has done.
Faith wants to argue. She wants to fight. She wants to live. But she is too covered up in dirt to move much anymore. The dirt is very heavy on her chest. She can feel the pressure on her lungs.
It is getting harder and harder to breathe as Calum shovels more dirt on top of her. He is covering her remarkably fast.
He just wants to get this done and over with. He can't deal with her anymore. He regrets ever loving her. He regrets marrying her. She is just a pain for him now. She is nothing but a burden on him and his life.
He regrets not killing her sooner.
Faith spits every time dirt lands in her mouth. With every bit of dirt that Calum throws inside, more and more gets inside her mouth as it rolls down the mountain in front of her.
The dirt is so heavy that she can't move the lower half of her body. She can't move her arm either. The pain returns greater if she moves it at all. If she doesn't use it, the pain is almost bearable for her.
Calum continues shoveling dirt in to the hole. She is almost completely covered now.
Dirt covers Faith's face in a thin layer. She closes her eyes and takes a deep breath.
Faith no longer fears death. It is actually quite peaceful for her considering the alternative.
She just hopes that her father will understand why she stopped trying to live. She hopes he will be able to recover from her death.
He is all she cares about now. He is all she has ever cared about.
She worried about his well-being after he learns of her impending death.
She can just see him collapsing on the floor like he did when her mom died. It was a sudden death just like Faith's will be. Faith knows he will not be prepared to lose her just like he wasn't prepared when he lost his wife.
She worries about him.
Her breathing becomes labored as oxygen wears thinner with each shovel-full of dirt Calum throws on top of her.
Once finished, Calum throws the shovel down and nods at the pile of dirt he placed back inside the hole. He smacks his hands together and then wipes them on his pants to clean off the dirt.
He turns and sees the bright lights of the police cars. He sees distant figures walk inside his home.
He smiles. He knows they are too late. He couldn't be happier knowing that everything has fallen into place just the way he wanted it to.
He pulls out his gun and holds it in his hands while he admires everything it has helped him do. It helped him through some very tough times.
It helped him rid himself of his terrible family.
It helped him rid himself of his terrible wife.
He climbs on top of the dirt covering Faith and holds the gun in his lap, waiting for officers to come find him.
He can't wait for what is to follow.
