Chapter 4: Hello, Brother
Harry
After another incredibly challenging college year, I'm ready to go back home and rest for a while.
Honestly, I don't know what the hell I was thinking of choosing pre - med. There are so many years of studying ahead of me that it gets daunting sometimes.
I guess the pride in my parents' faces when I announced to them my choice still packs an emotional punch.
I didn't fail any classes, fortunately. But let's just say college life is hitting me a bit harder than I imagined.
But for now at least, I'm thankful to be done with my second year. I also am looking forward to getting some space between me and my roommate.
Not that I dislike him, per se. But there's only so much grunting and pouting I can take. The silent treatment is not good either.
And I never did anything against him, on the contrary. Like I said, I even helped him when his heat struck.
Not because I'm immune to it, I'm not. But mated omega's heat is not the same as unmated, I mean it's not as powerful. So it was just a matter of popping some pills in him - medicine to remedy the effects of heat - and making sure he stayed hydrated.
I'm a good roommate, but once his Alpha was killed, all the good will I had been earning went down the drain. I never met the guy, of course, but I've heard he was a fair and respected leader.
Goddess rest his soul.
After the last class, I returned to my dorm to pack up my stuff. I'm going to return home with Spencer in his car since I didn't bring mine to Houston.
I arrived only to find my roommate and his mate already there doing the same. I had barely stepped one foot inside the dorm and the tall, dark and handsome boy was already glaring at me for no apparent reason.
"I can't believe you drove here all the way from Austin just to pick him up!" I commented, baffled by his presence here already.
"Of course you can't. You don't know what it is like to be mated to someone." He snapped at me and I growled at him for the unnecessary jab.
"Thanks for the clarification." I rolled my eyes in annoyance, already starting to pack up my belongings.
I quietly did my thing as they did theirs. Apparently we can't even be civil to each other. Some time later, Spencer showed up at my room.
"Are you ready, Harry?" He asked me, getting wide eyed at the couple inside with me, neither of them looking friendly.
"Not yet, Spence. But can you take these bags to the car, please?" I replied, handing him my luggage.
"Are you sure you don't need any backup?" He asked me, glancing at the antagonizing couple.
The tall guy laughed at his question dismissively.
"I'm sure, thanks. Neither of them can take me on." I scoffed, purposefully.
They both glared daggers at me while my friend walked out with the bags.
"You wouldn't be so confident if we weren't among so many humans." The tanned skin boy grunted at me.
"I'm always confident, Carillon. You have no idea of what I'm capable of!" I shot back, defiantly. I have been trained by warriors for years, so I meant what I said.
"I know full well what your people are capable of!" - He retorted loudly, sulking.
"For the last time, I had nothing to do with what happened to Alpha Barnett!" - I reiterated for the upteenth time, beyond irritated.
Both of the young men leave the dorm shortly after, carrying my roommate's stuff. I take the rest of my possessions and go outside to meet Spencer.
We got into his car, packed and ready to go.
"I can't believe we finally get to ditch this place!" He commented, breathing out a sigh of relief.
"I know, right? Tell me about it!" I agreed enthusiastically.
I know I won't have the same carefree environment at home like I have here, that's for sure. I also know that I won't have the opportunity to get frisky with human boys like the ones available in the college dorms.
But I'm glad to leave here and be done with all the studying, for one. Plus, everyone is gonna leave and I'm not gonna spend my summer alone in this big city.
I do miss my family very much, what can I say? After hearing what happened to Alpha Barnett, I was very scared for my dad and the retaliation from the Regency Falls pack. I still am, to be quite honest.
It's been several weeks since their Alpha has been gone and so far no reprisals against our pack. I'm no expert in warfare by any means, but this seems a little eery to me.
"Thanks for not saying how much you miss Kevin, Spence. But it's okay, you can talk about him. It's not triggering to me." I spoke after a few hours on the road.
My friend stared at me wide eyed for a moment, then breathed out a sigh of relief.
"Thanks, Harry. I just didn't want you to think I'm flaunting my mate in your face and being disrespectful to you." He said, remorsefully.
"I'd never think that of you, don't sweat it." I assured him in a light tone.
I'm fully aware I'm the odd man out when it comes to mating. Every single werewolf I know apart from my younger siblings is mated. I can't have people tiptoeing around me or I will never be able to interact with anyone whatsoever.
It's not a pleasant situation by any means, but I can't have that be the one thing that is going to derail my life. Like I said before, I'm not the first unmated college guy and I won't be the last one.
"I miss him so much, you have no idea! I can't wait to see him!" He admitted, pupils dilated at the mere thought of Kevin.
"I have some idea. Especially if I were mated to the hottest guy in the city!" I snickered, slightly jealous. Spencer laughed out loud at this.
"He's not the hottest guy in the city, Harry! Come on!" He downplayed it, blushing.
"Maybe not of the city, just of our class in high school." I argued, playfully.
"Well, to me he is." - Spencer got flustered. - "I know I hit the jackpot in the mating pool. He is incredible!" - He gushed.
"Yes you did, my friend. I'm happy for you. You deserve it." I tapped on his shoulders as he drove, grinning.
"You deserve a hot mate too, Harry. You'll see. When you find him, you're gonna be like... Kevin who? My mate is so much hotter than him." He snickered, slightly uncomfortable.
"I highly doubt it, but I don't care about how he looks, to be honest. I'm only joking with you. I know it sounds silly, but I care about what it's on the inside." I said, trying to defuse any possible jealousy on his part. It's also true.
I'm not trying to covet his mate in any way, shape or form. But he is hot. Facts are facts.
"It's not silly at all." Spencer said with hearts in his eyes as he saw his mate in front of the pack house, waiting for him to arrive.
"Did you text him to inform that you were arriving?" I asked him, intrigued at how he knew we were arriving just now.
"No, I didn't. He just sensed it through our bond." He replied, exuding so much pheromones the air gets thick with sexual attraction.
Spencer parked his car in the garage and we got out of it, carrying some of our bags. As soon as he sees his mate in front of the pack house, he drops everything and jumps into his welcoming - and strong - arms.
Kevin Thompson stands at 6 foot tall, thick muscles and a delicious chocolate skin. It's hard not to be taken aback by his presence, even though I'm used to it since we all grew up together and attended the same high school.
They kissed each other for a good five minutes. I tried to give them some space by carrying our baggage inside the pack house. They don't need an audience for their love.
It's late at night, so everybody is probably sleeping already. Though I grew up in this house, now that my brother has ascended as Alpha, my parents don't live here anymore. They moved out to make room for my brother and his mate.
But my room is still intact, fortunately.
"Let me help you with that, Harry. Hi, how have you been?" Kevin offered, coming inside the house and taking Spencer's bags from my hands.
"Hi, Kev. I'm good, thanks. And you? How is warrior life?" I asked him, smiling at the young man with a wide smile plastered all over his face.
"Surprisingly uneventful despite everything." He replied, sincerely.
"Good. I'm a little scared for my family, not gonna lie." I spoke in a fearful tone. I'm not buying this radio silence from our rivals. To me, they're up to no good and it's gonna hit us like a ton of bricks.
"You shouldn't be, Harry. We've got it covered. We are very prepared against any incursion from their pack." - He reassured me in a serious tone.
"Good, then I'm glad." I smiled weakly at him, still troubled by this ugly war.
We made our way inside, he took the bags up to his room in the guest wing. I said goodnight to him and Spencer, then made my way up to the Alpha wing of the manor.
The pack house has two separate wings of rooms. One where the Alpha family sleeps and the other where young pack members rent rooms. It's good for couples before starting a family or people whose mates spend most of the time away at college. It provides meals that are prepared by the cooking staff and it comes in handy for young people fresh out of high school.
I entered my room, dropped my bag, took a quick shower and crashed on my bed. Though I didn't drive, I'm exhausted from the long day. I almost want to sleep in, but I don't wanna miss breakfast tomorrow.
When I woke up with the alarm clock, I stretched out my arms lazily and quickly got up to start the day. Later, I walked inside the dining hall surprised to see my entire family having breakfast, not just my brother and his mate.
"What are you all doing here this early?" I questioned, baffled by their unexpected but delightful presence.
"We came to see you, of course." My mom replied, getting up from her seat and darting to hug me.
I took in my mom's scent as I love her so much. I missed her most of all. I spent a good minute hugging her and receiving a welcome kiss on the cheek. My dad comes next with his bear hug that nearly sweeps me off my feet.
I'm 5'11, but my dad has a way of making me feel like a little boy when he hugs me. He kisses my forehead and welcomes me back. Then, the rugrats. My sister Monica, 13, and the youngest of us all, Justin, only 9 years old.
My sister in law greets me with a sweet smile and then my brother acknowledges I returned. He's not exactly the warmest when it comes to me. I always envied those types of brotherhoods where one is the other's best friend.
That is NOT our reality. Aaron and I never got along, unfortunately. I can't pinpoint exactly when everything went wrong with us growing up, but that's our reality.
"Good to see you too, big brother. I'm glad you're still here with us after that stupid move you did." I said in a snarky tone, bringing the mood significantly down.
"Don't even joke about it!" My mom reprimanded me, frowning at the implication.
"Bitch, please! They should be shaking in their boots, frightened of my next move." Aaron bragged with his smug grin.
"I don't wanna waste time talking about this issue! What's done is done and the important thing is that my son is back with his family, where he belongs." Dad interjected, glaring at the both of us.
"I know, dad. But my roommate is from Regency Falls and after what happened I thought he was gonna kill me in my sleep." I grunted, sideways glaring at my older brother.
Both my younger siblings gasped at this remark. Mom looked concerned and dad was annoyed. Aaron scoffs, which only angers me more.
"I know, son. But thankfully you're safe and sound." Dad said, breathing out a discontent sigh. I know he doesn't approve of my brother's approach. But he is the Alpha now, so it is what is.
"How is college life? Any cute boys in your class?" Jessica, Aaron's mate, asked me with a smile, trying to defuse the tension.
"Many, actually." I grinned at her.
"Good, maybe later we can have a chat and you can tell me all about it." She winked at me. I love her. She is way better than my brother ever deserved.
"It's a date, Luna." I winked back at her.
"Now that you're here we can send you on some diplomatic missions." Dad stated and I'm already exhausted at the implication.
"No, dad. I'm tired of searching for my mate aimlessly. I don't wanna waste my time traveling around. I prefer to enjoy my summer in my hometown. Plus, we shouldn't send anyone anywhere after what your son did." I rebuked, taking a dig at my brother.
"They are our enemies! What do you suppose I do with them? Cuddle?" Aaron shot back at me, raising his voice.
"What part of I don't want to talk about this subject did you boys not understand? Shush you two!" Dad yelled at us, irritated.
Both Aaron and I glared at each other silently. I take this opportunity to start eating my breakfast before it gets cold. I poured myself some coffee and stuffed my mouth with hot-ish pancakes.
"If you don't want to travel, that's fine son. But you have to make an appearance at next week's high school graduation ceremony." Dad informed me after a while.
"Sure, dad. Why not? It's my last chance anyway..." I muttered under my breath.
"You'll find him when it's time, Harry." Mom said in a soft tone, caressing my head.
"It's fine, mom. I'm not worried about it." I replied, trying to sound nonchalant.
Aaron scoffed at this and my eyes are already glowing at his hubris. Goddess, he's so obnoxious.
After breakfast, I checked back with Spencer since his mate had to leave for work early in the morning. Warrior life waits for no man. We met up inside the playroom of the pack house, a place where I spent so much time as a kid, not only playing video games but also talking with my friends.
"How was the reunion with Kevin? Are you already pregnant?" I snickered, mischievously.
"Funny. But no, I'm not. I have years of college ahead of me. I can't fall pregnant now, especially studying far from here." He replied, laughing nervously.
"I know, Spence. I'm joking. I'm very glad you're there with me." I spoke, playfully. I am very relieved to have a friendly face in Houston. Not that I didn't make any friends over there, but it can't compare to the familiarity I feel with him.
"Are you going to see your family today?" I asked, positioning myself better on the couch across from him.
"I am, yeah. Right after lunch. I just need to run some errands before, so I'm going in a few hours." He replied, anxiously.
"My family surprised me by coming here this morning." I commented, feeling glad that they did at the same time I'm a little annoyed at Aaron. And it showed on my face.
"Did Aaron give you a hard time?" He inquired, already aware of our complicated history.
"He's just an ass." I replied, annoyed at him.
"Hang in there, Harry." He touched my arm softly.
"Thanks, Spence. I guess there's not much choice in the matter. But I preferred it when my parents lived here. Now I'm without any buffer." I noted, mildly concerned.
I'm not afraid of him by any means, but I know our arguments can get heated at times.
"Just don't give in to his provocation. You can do it. You're the better man." He encouraged me with a smile.
I thanked him and we continued talking for a while before he had to return to his mate's room and get ready for his afternoon activities. Later, I visited my parents' home and spent more time with them.

A|N: Oh brother...
You should fear their retaliation, Harry. It's gonna hit like a motherfu--.
OFF: I loved this show and was sad to see it canceled, especially after last season's gay story line.
Love,
Léo.
