His Story

James sold his 20-year-old SUV months ago, so aside from the cobwebs, Foster's little family garage is occupied with hammers, wrenches, and all other hand tools. Those are, however, shoved aside into a corner and a tatty wooden chair is placed at the center.

The duo has brought the doppelganger here and assured him they just want to talk. But the doppelganger doesn't seem like a cooperative kind of guy at all. He's already made more than enough attempts to escape, making Jin kick up into his angry mode and thus deciding to subdue him in an old-fashioned way: tying him up.

"There," Jin says through clenched teeth as he secures the rope with a knot against the backrest of the chair.

The doppelganger growls. He wiggles and twists his body, making the chair clatter on the concrete slab floor. "Let me go!" He screams. "You have no right to tie me up!"

"And you have the right to steal?" Jin snaps, dusting off his hands.

Red observes standing beside, rubbing his lips with his thumb.

"Who are you? Kidnappers?" The doppelganger demands.

"Do we look like kidnappers?" Red asks, cracking a smile.

"How should I know? I've never been kidnapped before!"

Red's eyebrow twitches at the witty remark.

"Listen, no one's gonna pay a penny for me. So, let-me-go."

"Shut up, will ya?" Jin hurls, startling the captive. "Just answer what we ask."

"Fine..." the doppelganger lets out after a few more failed attempts to free himself.

"Okay," Red takes the lead in their informal interrogation procedure. "What's your name?"

"Toko."

A glance between the duo.

"Toko who?" Red asks and instantly realizing his question just sounded like a part of some knock-knock joke, he adds, "I mean your last name."

Toko stares at the floor. "No last name," he mutters and wiggles again with maximum effort, making the chair slide back and forth across the floor.

"Hey, buddy, calm down! We'll let you go if you answer our questions!" Red offers with a frown, grabbing the chair's backrest to keep it from falling.

Toko hangs his head low for a while then emits, "Only Toko. Don't believe me if you don't want to."

"Where are you from?" Jin jumps to the next question.

"Why'd you care?" Toko returns.

Jin's losing his temper, no doubt. Even Red feels his anger crawling up.

"Listen, dude," says Red. "We haven't brought you here without any reason. Just tell us what we want to know."

"I'm from hell. I'm a devil. Happy now?" Toko says with an irritated smirk on his face.

"Very happy," Red says sardonically.

When Mr. Doppelganger is about to drive them nuts, someone thumps on the garage door. The duo shares a glance, both anticipating Recon outside. They've informed him that his doppelganger has been found, and the kid said he was on his way.

"You locked the door?" Jin asks.

"Nope," Red says, approaching the door. "Guess he's too polite to barge in without knocking," he says, chuckling and rolling up the door with a metallic rattle.

"Dummies!"

"Sofie!" Red's jaw drops to the floor. To multiply their pain, his bossy little sister is standing in front of him with all her pride.

"Hello," Recon utters.

"Huh?" Being busy lifting his jaw, Red hasn't noticed that Recon's with Sofie.

"What are you up to this time, huh?" Sofie buzzes, stepping in. Her eyes catch the scene before her, and she seems to be struck by thunder.

"We... can explain...Right, Jin?" Red says, trying to hide the fear building inside him. He feels like he's the only unfortunate big brother in the world who has to watch his back, fearing his dear little sister might report him to their parents.

"He's responsible for his own fate," Jin offers.

"No, I'm not!" Toko protests. "They brought me here, against my will and..."

"Shut up!" Jin growls. "You are a thief! You know where you belong?" He jabs his finger at Toko's chest and adds in a serious tone, "Jail, that's where!"

"Wow! Incredible!" Sofie exclaims with a clap, her face beaming now. "Recon!" She looks at Recon once, then at Toko. "You two look identical!"

Recon doesn't respond. He's frozen in his position, eyes fixed on his doppelganger.

"You weren't kidding! He is your doppelganger!" Sofie continues chiming as she circles the chair Toko's on.

Red and Jin share a glance. Apparently, Recon told Sofie what's going on, and she isn't in a complaining mood. Good for them.

Toko moves his head from one side to another, frowning in annoyance, and trying to figure out why he's the center of attention. In a moment, his eyes meet Recon's.

Recon blinks, as though awakening from his imagination hibernation. He walks toward Toko, his back slightly hunched, hands lifted, and utterly imitating an ape's walking style. "My doppelganger!" he mumbles.

"Doo what?" Toko snaps and wiggles again. He's shocked upon seeing Recon but too stubborn to admit it.

"Doppelganger. You and I look alike," Recon explains, sounding like a college professor. He's not stammering anymore, instead, he looks happy.

Toko narrows his eyes and looks around. "Have you guys escaped from a mental hospital? None of you seem normal to me! Let-me-go...what have I ever done to you?"

"Sorry... I didn't mean to hurt you doppelganger..." Recon says, raising his hands and revealing his palms.

"My name is TOKO!"

Silence follows. The duo shares another glance. They still don't have their answers. Two people of the same age looking identical is too coincidental to believe they aren't related. On the other hand, Recon mentioned he's an only child. So what's the connection? Or is Toko really Recon's doppelganger? To find out, they need to explore Toko's history and to do that, they need to get him to talk.

"Okay," Red says. "Toko, you are under arrest."

"What?!" Toko gasps.

Jin returns a smile, guessing what Red's up to.

Red clasps his hands behind his back, trying to adopt a professional demeanor. He moves up his chin and says, "You have been charged for shoplifting and snatching a..." he pauses and squints his eyes to judge his wording, "respectable citizen's shopping bag," he completes.

"No!" Toko shouts. "You can't do this to me!"

"You should have thought about the consequences earlier," Red says, stepping toward Toko.

"Who are you to..."

Red glares at Sofie, cutting her off. He feels a bit of pride for being able to shut her up in time. "We work alongside the police," he says with a cautious wink.

Sofie rolls her eyes, willing to see where the drama goes.

"Please don't arrest him!" Recon whines.

What a softie! Red can't help but think as Recon falls for his trick. He's not the target but can provide enough assistance to keep up with his performance.

"No way..." Toko mumbles under his breath as he wiggles again, his teeth grinding and face flinching with effort. "No way I'm getting into another curse!" The chair trembles with the threat of being overturned. "No way you can send me to jail, DO YOU HEAR ME?"

"We can and we will," Jin says to confirm the kid is spooked enough.

"I finally broke free..." Toko says, lowering his head. His eyes glisten as he inhales a shaky breath.

"You've been in jail before?" Red asks.

"For me, those weren't any less than a jail," Toko says, finally letting the chair win the wrestle.

Red looks at Jin, kinda like talking using telepathy. Jin understands the unspoken message and responds by reaching behind the chair to untie Toko.

Toko takes a peek over his shoulder, confused. "Are you...letting me go?"

"Not yet, dude. But we might change our minds if you tell us all about you," says Red.

When Jin's done with the knots, Toko stretches. He then looks at everyone and asks, "Why do you want to know all about me?"

"Summary would do," Red offers, shrugging.

"But..."

"No more questions, only answers," Jin snaps.

Toko nods and gazes at the floor. Meanwhile, Red grabs a few plastic stools stacked together in a corner and distributes them among the others, getting ready for a lengthy narrative.

"My name is Toko Brown," Toko begins. "I'm 14, from Japan."

Red and Jin share a glance for the umpteenth time. The kid doesn't appear to be of Japanese descent, and the surname 'Brown' isn't Japanese either, but they choose not to inquire further for now.

"I used to live with my parents, Skyler Brown and Emma Brown. But that was long ago," Toko continues. "Before...they were killed."

"Killed?!" Recon chokes on the word. "S... somebody killed your p... parents?"

Toko nods. He's sitting bending forward with his head low and elbows planted on his thighs.

"Were the killers found?" Red asks.

"No, so far I know."

Silence follows.

"I was hiding inside the closet," Toko says after a moment, his voice deep. "I... I saw..." His words trail off as his jaw tightens. "There were a few guys with guns and..." He stops, sighs, and hangs his head even lower.

"Sorry," Red says on behalf of everyone.

"After that day, everything changed," Toko says when he's gained his composure back.

"Did your parents... have any conflict with someone? Someone who could..."

"I don't know. I was only six," Toko cuts Red off.

The room goes silent again. Toko raises his head after another moment. "My uncle brought me here and sent me to Safe Child Orphanage. He said I was a curse and he didn't want to be a part of his brother's sin." Toko clenches his fists and hits his knees, pain visible on his face.

"Does your uncle live here?" Jin asks.

"I don't know. We haven't met since he left me at the orphanage."

Recon's eyes have teared up. He's staring at Toko, all concerned.

"That orphanage was a jail," Toko says, describing the gloomy school of the orphanage and its strict rules. "It just wasn't the place for me! I always thought about escaping."

He sneers, as though about to describe something extremely exciting. "I finally got my chance when I turned thirteen." He moves his torso back and forth, looking thrilled.

"Lucky thirteen?" Red mutters but immediately regrets it as Sofie glares.

"There was a fire and everyone was running," Toko continues, clenching his fists upon his knees, straightening his back, and taking a look at everyone present. "The gate was open and there was no guard! It was my chance! Not thinking where I'd end up, I ran out. Nobody saw me. I was finally free!" He bursts into laughter, a laughter that signifies a strange mix of relief and grief.

Others look at each other, then at Toko, who's appearing like he's gone mad.

Toko kills his hysterical laughter. His face darkens as he gazes at the ceiling, staring blankly at the tiny spider hanging from its web.

"What's next?" Jin asks impatiently after a few minutes of silence.

Toko spins his head, focusing straight into Jin's eyes. "What's next?" he repeats. "Hunger." He looks at Red. "What's next? Starvation." He looks at Recon. "What's next? Misery." He looks at Sofie. "What's next? Life turned into hell."

He looks at the ceiling again. No one speaks. Being overwhelmed by realizing the narrator's torments, they wait patiently to know more about his story, his struggles, his sufferings.

There's a brief pause before Toko talks again. "You may ask, whether I regretted running off from the orphanage," he says, still watching the spider. "No. That thought never crossed my mind. I even begged, but never thought of going back."

Recon's eyes are spouting tears. He sniffs into his jacket's hood.

"Ew!" Sofie slides her stool across the floor, moving away from Recon. She flashes a faint smile as Jin narrows his eyes at her, annoyed.

Toko sighs, throws his head back, and rests it on the backrest. "For half of the year, I was all alone. All by myself, begging from street to street, sharing the sidewalk with other homeless people to sleep. And then..."

Lifting his head, Toko sits straight. "You said you'd let me go?"

Red feels everyone's eyes on him. "We..."

Toko laughs again, cutting him off. "I bet you won't if I tell you all about me."

Getting no response from the confused audience, Toko goes on, fixing his eyes on the garage door. "Not long ago, I was begging near the highway when a middle-aged man on his bike stopped beside me. He offered me a job and took me with him to his... 'den.' There were more of his workers, some my age, some older."

"We used to..." Toko glances at everyone one more time, then bends over and drops his gaze to the floor. "We used to rob cars on the highway."

"You did what?!" Red exclaims, sharing a shocked glance with Jin. They know they heard right, but being aware of 'the highway robbers' from recent news, they find the fact hard to believe.

The robber gang has evaded the police for months and just weeks ago, the police chief announced a specialized task force to capture them. Now, a member of that very gang is sitting inside their garage right in front of them! How crazy is that?

"You are a robber?" Sofie cries out, jolted by Toko's admission.

"A highway robber," Jin clarifies.

Recon isn't in a state to react. Instead, he sets his eyeballs on Toko open-mouthed.

"Not anymore," Toko says, shrugging. He waits for his audience to suck up the information. "When Taylor took me with him, I had no idea what job he was going to make me do. But when I found out, I still agreed. It was the toughest time of my life, what other choices did I have?"

"Maybe a part-time job?" Sofie says in response to Toko's not-expecting-an-answer type of question.

"So that the orphanage could find me?" Toko shoots back. "They had even put up posters searching for me!"

Sofie utters an 'oh.'

"Why did you leave the gang then?" Jin asks.

Toko frowns, taking the comment as sarcasm. "You have no idea why, wise guy."

Jin prefers to raise an eyebrow.

Toko continues, "A few weeks ago, we stopped a car. Inside there was an old lady, a young man, and the driver. Bill, the one leading our team, pulled the man out and threatened him with a knife, demanding everything they had. The man said he was rushing his mother to the hospital and I noticed the elderly woman inside was struggling to breathe. It seemed like she was dying. I asked Bill to let them go but he pushed me aside. It was an opening for the man. He kicked Bill and jumped back into the car, then they sped away before we could even react."

"Bill got mad. He began cursing, then gave me a hefty shove and I fell. He pulled me up by grabbing my hair. I felt like my skin was going to peel off," Toko explains his terrifying experience, his eyes wide, vision frozen at the floor, and having goosebumps all over, like he's witnessing the very scene at the very moment.

"I punched him in the face to free myself and there was a scuffle. Being older and stronger, he had me cornered. I was unable to keep up with him so I tried to dodge his blows. But... I forgot that he had a knife."

Toko gulps and clutches the left side of his belly with his right hand. "He stabbed me."

The last sentence shocks everyone. Toko pauses and tries to calm down.

Red strokes his chin at the interval. Jin shows no reaction, as though he's seen this coming.

"They left me there. They left me... to die," Toko said, voice trembling. "I crawled to the side. That's the last thing I remember before waking up in a hospital. Someone from the police found me, and I survived. They asked me what happened. I said I was begging when someone robbed me. I stayed in the hospital for a week, and when I felt I could walk, I fled."

"I decided I would never work with them anymore. I got on a bus and arrived in this city. I started begging again, but it was so hard for me to keep walking. I wasn't fully healed."

"Another week passed, and I was feeling better. I thought the orphanage might have given up on finding me, as it had been a year since I fled. So I tried to find a job that would make enough money for me to survive. I went from store to store, asking for work, but no one hired me!"

Toko mutters a curse. "It's not like it's written on my face that I was a... robber?" He says, maybe expecting an answer but getting none. His audience is listening silently, hanging on to his words. So Toko goes on, "I was starving yesterday when I passed by a store. I went in, picked up a loaf of bread, and ran out, then quickly darted into an alley, crawled over a wall, and into a park. Then I got as far as possible so that no one could follow."

"Today, I was begging in front of that mall. That lady, that miser lady, yelled that people like me are... making the city dirty!" He grits his teeth. "I wanted to teach her a lesson. So I seized her bag and... you know the rest. It wouldn't be possible for you to get me this easily if I hadn't been stabbed." He takes a breath, and leans, indicating he's done with his narration.

"Dude, you are from hell!" exclaims Red.

"Judge me," Toko says. "What would you do if you were in my place? Put yourselves in my shoes. Then answer, are you going to send me to jail? Will you send me to jail just because I wanted to live like anyone else in this world?" Toko's shaking, his eyes struggling to hold back tears. He grits his teeth, so tight that he might regret it later.

"No!" Recon whines. "Please don't arrest him!" he appeals as though Red's really from the police. "You can stay at my place, doppelganger," he adds, turning toward Toko and grabbing his hands.

Toko winces. "Back off!" he shouts, yanking his hands free. "What do you think I am? Something you can pet?"

"Hey, easy! He's just being nice," Sofie scolds.

As the minors continue their hue and cry, Red and Jin join a meeting at a corner. When done, they pace back to the others.

"Sorry buddy," Red says as he plucks a hair from Recon's head.

"Aw!" Recon wails.

Red grins, then plucks another hair from Toko's head.

"Hey!" Toko protests.

"Are you thinking what I'm thinking?" Sofie asks, her eyes sparkling.

"Yep," Red answers. "And you need to help us with it, Smarty."

"Sure!" She does another hair-plucking session, making Recon and Toko whine and growl. "Okay, they've got the roots," she says, examining the samples. "I'll take these to Professor Aldrich to get them DNA tested and you can expect the report within a few days."

"Now that's what I call a professor coming in handy," Red says, blowing two strands of hair toward Toko, who doesn't seem to be making heads or tails of what they're talking about.

"Can...I go now?" Toko asks.

"Nope," says Red. "You have to be our guest until...we say you can leave."

Toko frowns.

"Mom will find out, what then?"

Red winks. "I'll say he's here for a slumber party."

"Very funny..."

"Another thing," Jin cuts in. "You need to help the police track down your fellow robbers. It's the only way you can avoid punishment."

"But..." Toko shifts his gaze to the wall. "I...don't know where they are now."

"No rush, dude," says Red. "Take a break. You look exhausted."
