This quote from Laslow came when Jacky was mad at herself for not having been able to prevent Mari from using a Z Move in the fourth Alolan Trial. This quote reminds us of that sometimes, we have to deal with things as how they are, even if they are unpleasant. That some things cannot be prevented and not everything goes the way we want it to. That sometimes, we have to accept fate and that it is no use to quarrel with it.

"The most painful goodbyes are the ones that were never said and never explained."

Mari said this to Jayden regarding his sister who hated him. Jade had issues with him for always having been 'less valueable' (in her opinion) to her parents than Jayden was. And that she never got to know her brother who "died" (a goodbye never said). This quote is a reminder of how much it can hurt if someone you're close to simply leaves without warning, not even giving you a reason (like Soleil did when she left Kaoru for a while). In that situation, Kaoru kept blaming himself and was sad all the time. It really hurts if you cannot fathom why a person went away because you end up asking if it was because of you.

This is an accurate description of how Kaoru's mind works when he's depressed. This is what he told Jacky after Soleil has left. This is actually how many people feel at such a time...

You do that to feel alive rather than numb. Physical pain can take away emotional one... but it can also create a certain relief. You can almost say it's addictive. This is actually exactly what's going on when people cut their skin. And it is a really sad thing, to be honest...

This quote indicates Laslow's depression. It's sad in the way how he describes it.

- "To lose a friend is one thing. But having them stand in front of you and they can't remember you... that hurts even more."

Mari said that about Keon's return. As he turned into a Faller and he was unable to remember Zain whom he had wanted to save, it really struck a nerve. Because it is indeed painful to remember everything you went through with a specific person while the other can't.

-"When you are about to gain trust... have hopes that life means well with you for once and gives you a chance to achieve what you want. But then realize that everything was just a dream... and you never had a chance. Not really. That everything is long gone before it even started... and you disappear from the field as if you never had been there."

This tells everything about Taji's situation. His hopelessness because he would disappear anyway... and the knowledge of that being the bitter truth.

This quote shows how damn much Kaoru hates the life of an immortal. How much he wishes it all to stop. You can actually feel the pain in his words.

"Family is supposed to be our save haven. But sometimes, it's where we find our greatest heartache..."

We know how committed Lucian is to his family, so hearing him say that to Jairo about Taen's situation makes this quote even sadder. If the pain is given to you by your family, you most likely cannot escape it at all.

"A fire can't burn without the presence of oxygen. If hope was my oxygen, the fire of my determination would've already died."

Some might not be capable to understand the sadness inside this quote, but it's actually easy to find. This quote simply expresses how hopeless and worthless Yukine feels, since he was struggling with his graduation exams. He said that to Akira, telling him how little he thinks of himself (subliminally).

"It's so terribly easy pretending to be someone you're not."

This actually is quite accurate for how Akira acted at the very start. He was an asshole, so if he was supposed to be nice to anyone, he had to pretend- and Akira is pretending quite a lot even now. He's good of an actor, as he says about himself, so pretension is somewhat a part of his life.

"I think I am that kind of person that smiles whilst trying to hold back the tears... just to not be a burden to anyone."

The situation where Yukine said this was kinda unlucky and he could be mocked for this. The sad truth is that that's exactly how Yukine behaves. When he cried, he said 'I'm okay' or he hid himself so Akira couldn't see his tears at all. He knew that he was mostly annoying Akira, and he also knew that, when he was showing emotional weakness, Akira wouldn't care, or dig in on it even more. He never wanted to be a burden to him, and he thought if he was sad or crying, he would be exactly that for Akira. And that makes this quote so terribly sad.

And some honorable mentions here, as well:

"Feeling nothing was what kept me from getting hurt."

I don't think I need to elaborate this one. It's just painful.

"I didn't get over it, I got used to it. It's amazing what we can learn to get used to."

It's just sad to hear this from Taen... that he got used to pain and violence.

Moving on to number one now:

This is from the time Taen still had feelings... It just hurts reading what he is saying because he is giving up everything. He is starting to accept his fate and his life in a hell by slowly abandoning his emotions and hopes.
